Overcoming the current game state

Hey everyone.

First off i would like to say that I agree that the current issues with this game could and should be fixed and playable at this point.

I don’t intend to downplay them what so ever.

However I would like to talk about how you might be overcoming the issues and finding ways to enjoy different elements of the game or get the performance increased if you are on PC.

I failed to start off on the right foot with another post, but there were some gems from it that i would like to bring across.

Aparently there are some ways for PC players to improve performance and get some much needed fps back while still having good quality.

Havent figured it out myself yet, but would love to get close to 100fps while looking half decent. So if anyone knows anything please post about it.

Another was getting into some older cars, turning the HUD off and putting on some music from the era the car was built to enjoy the experience.

Its probably common knowledge, but i was excited to discuss the car voting side of the forum and talk about what would be interesting to see them add.

I’m a bit into drifting as well, so anything about which tracks and sections might be good to use would be appreciated.

Just a general open discussion about some of the fun things we can try and squeeze out of the current (admittedly poor and hard to deal with) state of the game.

I would love to see everyone with a “Yes, and…” attitude. But i understand that this is the internet and you may wish to express your disagreement with others.

Hopefully we can find some new ways to enjoy this game together.

I’m obsessed with making the game look as good as possible while maintaining a solid 60 fps at 3840x2160 with DLAA.Honestly the game can be made to look like project cars 3 and run at higher FPS,but that’s not for me.Fire up PC3 if you own it.The similarities are frightening…and PC3 has a boatload more content.BUT…FM8 drives waaaaay better thankfully.

When i use ny nvidea reccomended it gets to 60fps but its not consistent, i get these frame drop spikes around different parts of different tracks. And tips on what settings to have a play with?

I’ve prioritized FPS over visuals. Someone on Reddit suggested that I use the Medium Dynamic Render setting along with high/ultra for nearly everything that mattered. For me the only things I set to low or off were windshield reflections, motion blur and mirrors. The windshield was set to low, and so were the mirrors. I turned motion blur off, and since taking the redditor’s advice, I am rarely seeing frame drops and lower than 60fps. On top of that I am using RT reflections, so the cars look a little better when up close.

The biggest drawback for doing this, the game isn’t the best-looking racing title I have, but I’m getting smooth framerates, so that is a win in my book.

I don’t really have a strategy for dealing with fps drops. Honestly, I don’t think there’s much that can be done. It seems Update 2 has fixed that issue for me, at least I’ve been able to play a dozen rounds (at 3 laps a round) of rivals with my fps staying in the 100s and not dipping to 60 and 30. Yay.

I had two basic ideas for fun in the new Forza, based on previous experience.

First, in FM7, I liked to do 7-minute races with all my cars, and those I really liked I’d later take on a longer spin for 30 or 60 minutes. That isn’t an option here, as the prerequisite is race prep, which requires hours of grinding after which I’m positively sick of driving a car.

Second, in FH5, I did my own little Formula Drift-inspired championship. 32 cars, 8 drift zones, with knockout qualifying and single elimination battles. But that isn’t quite an option in FM23 either, again because of the upgrade system, and also for the general lack of drift support.

There is however time attack.

So right now, I’ve picked 8 European E class cars, (Clio Williams, Escort MkI, Opel Kadett, Porsche 914/6, Lotus Elan, DB5, Scirocco '88, and BMW 2002 turbo), which are cars I actually want to drive and a Scirocco, and I’ve picked 4 short tracks (Lime Rock, Suzuka, Mugello, Yas Marina).

Working with the same general rules, qualifying then single elimination, and one run (best clean time of 3 running laps) to set the score.

The upgrade system is still a major hiccup, fundamentally the competition is unfair when the Clio and Beamer are so far ahead of the rest, though the more laps I put it, the closer the gap. But I’m having fun, however unscientific the experiment is, and however hard the game tries to prevent it.

For the most part, I don’t see the frame drops in free play except for a couple of tracks that are horrible (Lime Rock seems to have issues no matter what the setting are for me). Online is another story, but I don’t think that is due to the graphics per se, I think it’s a poor net code thing.

Thats a really cool idea, so you swap between each of those cars and get your best time and see which one is slowest and knock it out from the rest of the tracks?

Or do you go through all 4 first and decide which is slowest on 4 different track times?

That actually sounds like a fun way to get the upgrade points up for multiple cars at once. Regardless of finding equal competition between them. Choosing a set from around the same starting PI and racing against myself in another car.

Even though the drift system isnt there, are there any ‘go to’ tracks that have some nice sections in them in your experience?

Instead of using a lot of words, I have pictures.

That’s what I did earlier on Mugello Club, scores in seconds.

And that’s where I’m at overall.

Woah. Is that data all spat out into that program automatically or are you going through and filling it out as you go like a spreadsheet?
I was totally expecting a hand written book with lap times in it haha!

Im really intrigued on how i can set this up for myself when i finish the last few builders cups.

It’s just for the data crunching, data entry is still manual (I don’t know whether it’s possible to capture lap times, and that sounds like a lot of work anyways). I put in the times, and it keeps track of who’s winning and so forth. I had an actual spreadsheet for my drift sessions, but Excel choked with the calculations. So I made a desktop app instead.

Thank you, this is exactly the types of things i was hoping to discover. Some ways to use what is currently working and make it more fun.

I might make something myself for personal use with this solo competition style in mind.

I finally fixed most of my issues with the visuals. The materials are still a bit weird, lacking depth compared to Gran Turismo, but that’s literally been a Forza thing since the first game. I’ll get over it XD

Biggest issue was that the visuals were super washed out and colors seemed to be crushing and distorting on the highlights and shadows. Toggling Dolby Vision off before update 2 mitigated it and toggling DV back on after, it seems to be gone almost entirely. Game’s still a little reddish, but it doesn’t look broken anymore. I think what was happening was that the game was crushing P3 color down to sRGB and then stretching that into HDR. Literally couldn’t see the track any time of day other than noon. Looks okay now. Naturally, being able to see the track has had a transformative impact on my ability to enjoy the game.

Example of what I’ve been seeing before the fix:

As for car voting, I’ve bought an Abarth 500 in almost every racing game I’ve played and was pretty disappointed it’s not here. I’d cry tears of joy if the Abarth 500e made it in but I’ll take literally any 500 (and yes, I’ve voted for them).

I’m a software developer and am currently building a tool to do that using the UDP telemetry. I’ll need to use AI to recognize the track and layout because they don’t provide it in the telemetry. PC first, then I’ll figure an option for XBox that will require at a minimum a Raspberry PI or tablet or maybe a smart phone.

Got me curious, found the documentation. Is it that the “TrackOrdinal” isn’t very helpful, or is it another issue?

Software projects are more of a hobby for me then actually being professional at it. Years of tinkering to see how things work than creating finished products.

I looked at trying to use the UDP telemetry with the platforms Ive used before and cant find anything in them or a plug in to let me receive UDP packets locally. What would be a good place to start with? Id like to make it run and recieve locally on PC only.

Ive got a bunch of time at work and would love to have a little project like this for the holidays coming up.

Im very interested to see what you come up with though

Ah yes, they did at the track ordinal for FM 2023 but I’ll have to create my own lookup table because they don’t have definitions for what the numbers mean.

Lookup tables are synonymous with AI?

No. AI is a good way to create lookup tables that weren’t provided

I fear, this kind of marketing bla bla is the root of all evil…
Built from the ground up!
