List everything you think is right with the game

I’ll make the start, feel free to add anything you think is right to this thread.

-I like the graphics
-I like the dynamic day and night cycle
-I like the “real” clouds even if they are a bit low res
-I like some of the cars sounds and looks
-I like that the cars aren’t very expensive
-I like the cars physics
-The game is so pretty much the only alternative to Gran Turismo for Xbox and PC players

I can’t think of anything else atm. This is the counterpart of the other thread.

I enjoy racing & leaderboard hot-lapping in a variety of real-world cars across categories/classes around many popular paved real-world racing circuits using a controller/gamepad, plus being able to customize the cars’ build/parts & tuning settings, with authentic-leaning physics/handling, and without arcade-style boosts/power-ups.

Games/simcades like the Forza Motorsport series and the Gran Turismo series are the only 2 options I know of that fit all these criteria, and Forza is the only one of those 2 that’s available for players who don’t have a PlayStation.

I mostly like how the cars feel

Agree on this mostly. When it’s good it’s really good. Alot of cars require effort. But I wouldn’t say this is a new thing

Yeah Forza Motorsport is the only alternative that Xbox and PC playes have. Everything else is too much of a simulation or an arcade game. But I especially like the simcade games.

The player count seems about right.

If you consider every car understeering like a pig perfect physics then ok…

It can be fun.

Easy to get into.

Does look fantastic in some areas.

Tracks actually feel populated while racing (despite my complaints about the carnivals).

Best wheel implementation in the series, in my opinion.

Great thread! I mostly like the feel of the cars/physics. Not a big fan of the hidden steering filters and aids on controller but heyyy :grinning:

No you can tone that down and adjust with tuning. The stock setup/tunes are dreadful. Also, you have to go almost full analogue stick lock on every turn, which I think is odd. Maybe they will improve the steering mechanics or at least give us full unfiltered control on pad. That should also mitigate the understeer. It feels too restricted and on-crutches at the moment. I would like full control even if break a leg

Great physics (apart from some cars that require tinkering with their default setups) combined with vast improvements to FFB on steering wheel, sense of speed, cameras, immersion, and some other things over FM7 are enough for me to keep playing this game since launch and enjoy it more than any previous Forza, despite so many shortcomings.

I like the car roster too (despite all those missing models), it’s large and diverse enough to keep me discovering new and exciting stuff for hundreds of hours.

The track mastery system with section scoring is another feature I adore, I wasn’t so invested in driving a lap after lap since at least Shift 2: Unleashed.

Also graphics looks very pretty (mostly), although I needed to swap my RTX 2080 for 4080 and start playing in 4K to really appreciate lighting, reflections, dynamic time of day, environment details, etc. I wish ForzaVista wasn’t so downgraded so that I could fully appreciate details of new car models as well

And the career mode, while shallow and very light on content, keeps me entertained thanks to diverse events with cool themes and introductions. If only they weren’t removed from the game after few weeks…

Biggest strengths:

  1. Accessibility: easily one of the most approachable sim-likes to introduce friends to. Even though it’s detrimental to multiplayer lobbies, the racing line in Forza is the most refined and reliable of any sim’s. Track boundaries are nice. The level of assistance adjustment is unmatched.

  2. Controller tuning: falls in line with the above. The steering filters will make anyone look smoother off the get-go. Great for beginners to intermediates. Trigger haptics are a legitimate skill buff.

  3. Chase cam: always been a series strength. Does a great job of conveying rotation and speed, despite making things look overdramatic.

  4. Environmental graphics: the actual fidelity of the environments is great. Lighting is natural, especially post-gamma correction. I think the effects are caricaturesque (water kick up and overall tsunami-levels of rain, speed FX on cams) and some environments are heavy handed with detail for sake of drama (think trees, trackside objects), but you can’t deny how pretty the environments look.

Disagree with a lot of what’s listed in this thread though:

  1. Car selection still extremely weak. Overall volume isn’t a strength, level of recycling is depressing, and existing selection feels extremely arbitrary and confusing. Not many appealing rides to pick from; too many popular classics missing, too many modern hits strangely absent.

  2. Tuning needs major improvement, still overpowered and succumbs to illogical metas, the descriptors are weak and completely unchanged, and they still haven’t introduced a tutorial of any sorts that seems like low hanging fruit for anyone who could’ve thought slightly outside the box for the franchise’s direction. How hard would it be to introduce a comprehensive, guided tuning segment? Make it Forza’s version of GT’s licensing system. I think it’s because the tuning impacts aren’t actually consistent and logic-based.

  3. Handling physics seem off. The controls feel great, the handling still needs work versus other titles. Front ends wash too easily, rear ends skirt too frequently. Completely inaccurate the further you climb the performance tree into aero-dominated vehicles.

  4. If we’re talking overall graphics—environments aside—the cars models aren’t competitive, and that’s what you’re staring at most of the time.

  5. The sounds haven’t caught up to modern standards and have arguably regressed when viewed as a whole.

Neutral:

  1. Handling of multiplayer. It’s in an agreeable spot and they’re working on it, but the past and current iterations of their playlists still need work.

  2. Wheel support: Yes, better than past iterations, but still one of the weakest contenders from any current sim-like title. Shouldn’t require so much user-dependent fine tuning.

I know it’s a meme, but I consider Forza’s PEN system better than most. It works more often than it doesn’t and actually enforces some level of frequent PENs.

I’m fairly mixed on FM lately. Some things I like, but there always seems to be a counter point.

  • I like the feel of the wheel and FFB… but very often I have to use trial and error tuning when a car DOESN’T feel good. In real life, I’d spend money on a professional tuner to get my car dialed in. My comparison is FM7, ACC, and GT7, where I only tune when a track needs a customized gearing, aero, or whatnot.
  • I like the real-time lighting. Truly feels like a new tech compared to FM7, ACC, and even GT7. Volumetric clouds overhead casting shadows that move… but then there are lighting shortfalls like the headlights, which are not only poorly rendered, but don’t cast very far. And the headlights from cars behind make my own car’s entire interior light up, with no shadows or occlusion from my own car. Compare this to GT7. Compare this to GT7 where light comes into the cockpit, strikes a bright color, and I see that color hinted on other areas of the cockpit, and there are even blurred reflections on some surfaces (even if they are faked and non-RT, sometimes running at 1/2 framerate).
  • I like the ability to open the hood and doors, and take a tour of the cars in the garage, which feels much more interactive and enjoyable (IMO) than GT7. I never pass up the enjoyment of doing this. Some FM cars are really nicely detailed. But… many are not well detailed. Many have weak and low resolution textures, especially on the interior (which I see while driving). Some don’t even have opening hood. Some cars look like their materials/shaders were applied via some automation, with little attention to fit and finish. And this makes the old car models seem even older.
  • I generally like the economy. Money earning feels decent, and the cars feel attainable. But, I do need to be careful. Especially with the monthly rotating Cup events. In the Endurance cups, there can be up to 8 cars to buy, and costing between $100k and $300k… this can easily add up to me spending more than I win during the series. For players short on cash, taking time to earn more cash on other races so they can afford to keep playing the cup events may be tough, since of course the Cup events are time limited.

I try not to judge to strongly, however. I play on Series S. So maybe these issues are not there (or not as bad) for PC and Series X players. This is particularly true for the issue I most DISLIKE about FM… The blurry and low resolution image. I am near certain that this is a Series S limitation, due in part perhaps to the more advanced lighting. FM7 to me looks sharper and cleaner on my Series S (even though, and perhaps directly because, it’s old-tech). I’ve seen FM PC screenshots that are far sharper.

And as for my point on the economy… well I guess any game I’d need to be careful with my credits. Still, feels weird to begin a new cup series and see my credit balance drop, instead of increase, the more I play.

I’ll make a corresponding post in the other thread as well

  • Once a car has been tuned, the driving physics feel great (which is usually a given for any Forza title)
  • Proximity radar, although arguably overdue, was a great addition. It still needs some polish IMO but the utility is there
  • Visually the game has some very good moments
  • Adjustable tire wear multiplier
  • The penalty system in multiplayer is controversial, but I would rather have it than not have it. Still needs work of course, but I feel like it cleans up most races
  • The 24 hour daylight cycle is a pretty good addition (Weather is so-so but I’ll save it for the other thread)

  1. I like that I don’t need to go through some long silly licensing events to unlock races/cars. Sure the builders cup is a little annoying but at least it is racing.
  2. I like that it doesn’t feel like a grind to get enough funds to gets cars you want to use.
  3. I like all the options available for creating a race in Free-play
