My (non)professional opinion on the new Motorsport

I’ve played and completed every Forza game ever made and the latest instalment of Motorsport is………well interesting.

Personally, I love the game. Yes there are bugs galore, but unfortunately when it comes to modern gaming, it’s the norm, and if you expect a game to come out with no bugs, you’re being unrealistic. Fortunately the bugs will (slowly) be fixed, until then we have to put up with them, as frustrating as it is.

As for the game play, I love everything about it, yeah the career could be better (or more real life based), but it’s a racing game where the career consists of racing….who’d of thought? The car levelling system is great, I LOVE the fact that you can’t just buy a car and fully upgrade it straight away, having to actually play the game to get the car to where you want it is f#$%ing brilliant!

The rivals are great, there are a great mix of revolving and fixed events, likewise with the public multiplayer. The public multiplayer compulsory practice/qualifying makes the racing much better (despite still being unnecessarily rammed by people). It unfortunately takes much longer now to complete a multiplayer race but it’s a necessary evil in my opinion. I have questions regarding the skill based matchmaking though, as I don’t understand why I’m put in a lobby as an S rated racer with someone I lap after the second lap because they can’t keep their car on the track?

Free play is……free play, not much to say really, it is what it is.

Private multiplayer is where the most amount of work is needed in my opinion, as it stands right now it’s just average. What I think we are missing:

  • Optional practise session
  • Optional qualifying
  • Option to have everyone fully ghosted for any session
  • Leagues
  • A dirtied lap should NOT be included as a best lap (currently it does)
  • Custom grid ordering
  • Ability to add AI

The penalty system is a must, however I really am sick of being penalised after someone else punts me off the track! Some improvements need to be made but the concept that was introduced in FM7 has evolved into something that makes racing a little fairer. I’ve tested the system a lot (not in public lobbies) to see what you can and can’t get away with and have found that generally the system is fair in awarding penalties for collisions and going off track. For example, if you go off track and get off the throttle, you probably won’t get a penalty, contrast where you don’t get off the throttle and push the car while off track, you’ll get a penalty.

The car customisation is not ideal and feels a little cumbersome, but because of the levelling system I’m not sure how else it could be done, overall I’m not unhappy with it but we’ll see if any improvements come. Upgrading and tuning just feels weird compared to what we’re used to, this may just be because we’re not used to levelling cars like this.

The design area (vinyls and liveries) are fine, not great but also not terrible. Hopefully all the issues (and there are a lot of them) surrounding this area are fixed soon so players can enjoy being creative properly.

One of the biggest things I’ve noticed while racing is the lack of effect on your car when racing in the rain, yeah it’s slippery as it should be, but hit a puddle….and nothing happens. No unsettling of the car at all, here’s my thread on this Puddles on track

I also don’t understand why there aren’t any stats in the game, hopefully they are coming!

I have no doubt this game will grow and expand into an amazing game, for now though we have what we have, for me it’s an introduction to something much bigger and greater.

Yes it’s true and normal that every game has bugs. However it’s very abnormal for a game to be released in such a poor state as this game, with major stability issues that prevent many from playing or at a very minimum severely impact their ability to play. Noting this is set to continue for at least another 2 weeks. Outside of the stability issues then yes there are bugs like every other game.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not making excuses for the issues that exist, nor do I think it’s acceptable. I’ve generalised a lot and am fully aware that for some the game is unplayable. It’s just a shame that so many people have turned off the game because of these issues.

It’s not going to please everyone, it’s too positive  personally, I agree with what you say, I couldn’t have done better, but for puddles, I had already opened a thread on puddles and aquaplaning it should be merged

It’s a shame that Turn10/Microsoft didn’t delay this game. Had they delayed it then players most certainly would be upset. But that would be a much better position to be in then where they are right now. I don’t think it gets much worse for a AAA company then this given their claims that this has been in development for 6+ years, built from the ground up, not to mention they determined the release date themsepves. If the game was more popular then it would easily have blown up on the internet just like Cyberpunk and gone down as one of the biggest failed launches in years… It still is but only for those few of us who play.

For me, if you take away all the issues, the game itself is great, I actually love it as a Forza Motorsport game. BUT I am under no illusion that what we have is only a portion of the game it should be, as I said, it’s a great introduction to what is coming lol
