There’s been a gradual shift at Playground Games though, particularly in the last year. Horizon 5 was firmly in the same position that Motorsport 2023 is now - a soulless, aimless exercise in rampant commercialization, and nowhere was that more evident than in the updates that came towards the end of it’s first year, with Extreme E and the 10th Anniversary being especially egregious.
Then Mike Brown left.
Since then, the tables have been gradually turning. The content we’ve been getting has been improving. The team members who show off that stuff every month is more into things. It feels like they’re not trying to sell the game anymore, but make it better instead, and this new update seems to be the biggest step in that player-focused direction in Horizon 5’s entire lifecycle. I’m not going to lie and say that Horizon 5 is perfect now, because it’s still far from that. But I’m also going to give credit where it’s due, and with the moves they’ve been making in the last few months, Playground Games is in a much better position than they were a year ago.
