I feel the heart of the matter is that some people feel they HAVE to own everything. Every car, every special paint, every track, every event. They don’t realize that to have it all in any game or hobby as some have put it WILL be expensive.
Buying the most expensive package at launch will not guarantee all future content. The number of packs was explicitly stated with the description of the game you were buying as well as the number of cars in each pack. Some packs even included free cars! The Ultimate Edition made no mention of including future game expansions.
A statement from someone two years ago saying they won’t be doing anymore unicorns will not guarantee they would never appear again. In a game with literally hundreds of cars, a handful of unicorns is not going to make a sizeable difference. This game has more cars than any sane person can realistically drive. Some are paranoid not having a certain unicorn car will instantly make them completely noncompetitive and that is far from the truth.
Why would it refer to the time of sale (besides, it’s still being sold)? IMO, there should be no Ultimate Edition at release. An ultimate edition should indeed be Ultimate, it should be released after all content of a game has come out, and should naturally include everything. Releasing an Ultimate Edition on the official release date that does not include all game content is bound to cause misunderstanding. I’m honestly not surprised by the complaints about the Ultimate Edition not including all game content, in fact, I believe it was asked for when that title was chosen for an edition that is not the Ultimate when it comes to content. I can indeed conceive of an edition that goes beyond the Ultimate Edition.
It certainly is at the heart of the matter, but I don’t think that’s all there is to it.
No, buying the most expensive package at launch will not guarantee all future content, but, there’s a difference between it being called say Super Deluxe or Ultimate. As you’ve said yourself, some people have to have everything, and ideally, they want everything in one package. A lot of people wish to buy everything at once, no matter the price. And while nobody argues that it wasn’t explicitly stated what was included, certain words do have certain associations, and Ultimate is one of these words. So is Complete. So is Definitive. If you don’t read the fine print, it is not unreasonable to believe that an Ultimate Edition, or a Complete Edition, or a Definitive Edition, includes everything there is to a game. It actually is quite a reasonable assumption based on the title alone. I do believe that Ultimate for an edition that will not be Ultimate in the end is indeed misleading, and we shouldn’t be surprised at all if people end up complaining because they’ve relied on their understanding, a quite common understanding, of the title.
I, for one, have absolutely no issues with all the complaints, and I believe this could have easily been avoided with a more sensible title, i.e. one that doesn’t include words such as “Ultimate”, “Complete”, “Definitive”, or synonymous.
Theres a sucker born ever day. The ultimate gave you everything on day one. So it meets the definition. Your try interpret to be more than it is. People really should read what their buying instead of assuming.
It was, irrespective of what it may have been called. But even back then it was already conceived of something beyond the Ultimate Edition, i.e. something more in terms of game content, so why then call it the Ultimate Edition? What exactly is “Ultimate” about an edition that doesn’t include everything in terms of content? There is something beyond the Ultimate Edition, and conceivably there always was. To me, the title “Ultimate Edition” makes no sense for said edition, it never did. As such, I’m not surprised that some people would have expected it to be more than it actually is. To me, the argument that it necessarily must be understood as containing everything available on the day of release only, but nothing else, is not one I could agree with. With a title of “Ultimate Edition” it could well be understood as including everything, not just what’s available at release.
I don’t think that this post is especially helpful nor does it promote harmony but the OP does make some interesting points.
For me the Rolls Royce event was spoiled by constant complaining about how hard it was. I love that it was difficult, the car is a unicorn, it should be rare. I also hope that there are future unicorns that can only be obtained by league play or tuning competitions or painting or by livining in a certain country or getting lucky in a lottery.
