You just have to scout the best deals, even if it means not pre-ordering, which is usually a mistake with most games. If you can score decent prices or wait for sales, you wouldn’t be as bitter. I am probably the cheapest Forza fan on record and have always gotten the best deal possible. Here is my full Forza expenditure…
FM1: Purchased used so long ago I don’t remember. Omitted for this list.
FM2: Used for $2
FM3: Used for $7
FM4: Used for $20
FM5: Skipped
FM6: Included in Name Your Game bundle: $0
FM6 VIP: Purchased on sale: $10
FM6 Apex: Will be free: $0
F Horizon 1: Found code card in a used copy of Stoked!: $0
F Horizon 2 (360): Used some gift cards: $0
F Horizon 2 (XB1): Don’t have yet
F Horizon 3 (XB1): Not released yet…
Total thus far not including the Porsche pack which I will likely buy: $39
Wow, you got some great bargains there mate…congrats…
Like you I ‘shop around’ in order to find what I want.
I take note of what’s on offer when viewing deals, what’s included, what isn’t.
I look at the cost factor, see if my overall purchase is worth it over time.
Will the game I’m buying give me good return on my money spent.
Over the years since the Xbox first hit the stands way back when…I’ve gotten much more out of each iteration of the games that Ive spent the money on, and believe I’ve gotten a fair return on my investment.
I know that “my choices” have given me value for money. And still, at the end of the day, it’s always been that…my informed choice!!
Unfortunately, many younger gamers don’t research their purchases, in fact, many don’t actually purchase the the games themselves. Those in that bracket generally have their games bought for them by parents. Not all mind you, but a significant chunk of them.
A good friend of mine manages one of the biggest gaming chains in Australia. His research shows that the majority of racing game purchases are bought by parents. Many also buy the games that are outside their child’s age appropriate status etc.
He has to have every staff member explain to every parent purchasing games that fut that catergory, that the game is distinctly aimed at adult gamers and that the game has extreme violence, and is NOT SUITABLE for their child.
Of course this doesn’t apply to Forza and its franchise, but it does explain the difficulty stores have in selling games, and the fact that a huge percentage of purchasers are in fact parents, not the younger gamer. They simply buy what their child wants…".
He’s used to getting what he wants because his parents will just buy it for him/her under whatever circumstances. I’ve been in the various stores when parents have purchased games for their children. Showing little concern for the item they are purchasing, but simply fulfilling the need of the child, because “they want it…Billy has it and I want it too”…
Yes, yes, I know I’m generalising here. But after 15yrs of helping my friends in stores, working with them and publishers behind the scene, I’ve come to understand that there is a huge level of "entitlement " existent these days, sadly.
What’s the cure one would say???
There is no cure…what’s needed is for parents to change their ways in giving their children everything they ask for. Mobile phones for 3-4yr olds, iPads for 5-6yr olds, any game they wish for, be it a downloadable one off the net, or one that suits a console that’s In the house, which is just full of every conceivable necessity known to man.
It is changing, and it’s wonderful to see.
Younger parents that have grown up in the technological age, where the thought of NOT. having the latest “thing” they can see scares them, and the results of “instant gratification” and “I must own everything” just is not serving them or their children… They are starting to cut back on things, starting to implement the ‘work for what you want’ ideas with their children.
I grew up in the era of “you worked for what you wanted”… I worked around the house doing the dishes, lawns, gardens etc etc, I did chores for the neighbours and then did after school work at the local shops.
All to “earn” some pocket money in order to buy the things I might like. Those of us here that are over 40, and there’s plenty of us btw, know what I’m referring to. We got what we worked for, nothing more, nothing less.
I’ve most certainly gone overboard with my gaming purchases overall the last few decades. I have at least 5 original Xbox’s, all Collectables btw, have several 360’s, both faceplate and slimline models. Plus a few Xbox Ones. But it’s all been my choice, based on my research into what I’m paying for.
My 2 Forza 6 Xbox One consoles were originally $599, but I waited until they’d been on the shelves for several months, then, as they were clearing stock, they were dropped to just $415.95 each. Which of course included the digital token of the game, the console, and a special controller. Nothing more, nothing less.
I didn’t expect anything more. I did however purchase additional content for one, as it was for my sons 39th birthday. Again, I knew what I was buying, and haven’t expected anything more.
I paid happily for the Porsche’ Expansion Pack, knowing it was more than just a simple DLC pack. I read what was included and what it meant when I added it onto the existing game.
It was a game within a game. Definitely worth the $au27 I paid for it.
To top it off, I’m on a disability pension, a strict fortnightly payment that forces me to put funds away, save for them. Which means, I have to wait for the things I want, go without in order to obtain what I want. My son now does the same. Investigates his purchases, knows what he’s paying for and hopefully, he will pass that philosophy to his children, and on it goes.
Don’t blame the “Entitlement Generation”… Blame the society that’s created it, which of course includes us. After all, we created this mess, now we have to clean it up, somehow…
Wanna bet? LOL!!! Seriously, I’m just messing with you, but you are certainly not the first person to say that on these forums in the last 10 years. Some have really done well, and actually punished Turn 10 for months. But most usually break down when the next DLC drops.
You just have to be realistic. The cost of video games is directly related to the amount of disposable income, the cost of manufacturing and supply and demand.
Everything costs more and game developers have the same increases in overhead, salaries and production costs.
Consider this: If you walked into a Dave & Busters with $100 to spend, how long would it last you?
The answer is probably less than 3 hours of actual game at about $33.35 an hour to play. So, if you pay $100 for FM6 Ultimate Edition, can you reasonably expect to get more than 3 hours of actual game time? I know from experience that I can easily spend upwards of 1800 hours of driving, while waiting for the next FM Game to launch. That works out to a whopping $.05 per hour of RACING. That doesn’t include time spent creating art or tuning, taking photos or just hanging in lobbies with new, like minded friends.
So, I would bet you will be buying the next car pack, You seem like a smart guy, who happens to enjoy racing cars. You will realize the exceptional value and soon be hollering at slow pokes like me to move over, and, frankly, I can’t wait.
I don’t understand people that are “done” with something and then hang around reminding everyone they are done.
I bought the Ultimate package, have gotten everything I was told I’d get, and have bought more since.
I’m a very happy camper.
There’s plenty going on still, one more car pack to drop already paid for and if rumors are correct a Top gear pack after that to buy IF it looks good. Most likely it will based on past experience as I don’t have a specific “it has to have XXXX” mindset. If it’ll drift, race, jump at the airport or paint will stick to it, I’ll probably like it.
As for the Negative Nancies, I’ve got better things to do than read Debbie Downer “stuff”.
See you out on the track, I’ll be the one with the big smile on my face.
I think what most people dont understand is that the Porche is not a normal car pack.
Its and expansion to the game, including, new single player carreer, showcases, achivements, a new brilliant track in 6 configurations, and 21 new porche cars. About the track alone its imo one of the best in Forza 6, right up there with Nordschelife, and Bathurst.
About the unicorns. I think this is a diferent matter. The way they are doing it with the lambo’s are very good, as now everyone has a resonable chance to get at least the base model lambo’s, and those that are very good at the game can also try and get silver/ gold to show off their skills.
The other way with the last unicorns, where its like only a very litle % of gamer who has a chance to get the car that was poor game design.
Lets get this straight, Turn 10 do not owe those who bought the Ultimate Edition (myself included) anything else. We have had plenty of value from this package and more!
They have done a fantastic job of this game and all of the content they have released. As far as I’m concerned, unicorn cars are a completely separate thing and no one is ‘entitled’ to them. I remember the Forza 2 days though so I’m slightly ‘old school’.
The Porsche pack is an EXPANSION. You have to pay for this, it’s that simple. Nowhere does it state it would’ve been included in the Ultimate Edition, so stop kidding yourself.
Least of all, stop bitching! Enjoy the game and if you don’t like it, don’t play it! No one cares if you’re boycotting it because you have to pay for the Porsche expansion and quite frankly Turn 10 won’t either. They have enough reasonable loyal customers to not worry about the people with an inflated sense of entitlement.
I think people have a legitimate gripe about the game getting a bit too expensive, after shelling out $100 USD and more for the ultimate edition and having to shell out close to 30% of what the base game is worth for new track and car content. Let them vent, it’s good overall hear the laments of how expensive this game could get in the future. Also, by the small numbers of players in the Porsche leagues it looks like most people shied away from the expansion pack. The question really is, was the Porsche licenses that expensive that they had to pass the cost on to gamers with a profit margin, or could they have gotten by charging just $9.99 for the expansion?
…and what also needs to “be said” is that all content should be available to everyone in some sort of fashion.
No whole base car should be “impossible” to get (unicorns). We don’t need unicorns for video games period. A game where Turn 10 and Dan G. time and time again mention the whole premise of Forza is about car culture and allowing us to drive cars which we most likely will never get to experience.
The solution to unicorns is a special livery. That’s it, no one’s mad, problem solved.
Heck, Turn 10 doesn’t have to offer anything other than credits, let alone a livery or a whole car.
I don’t expect nor ever said it I am owed something because I am VIP or an Ultimate Type-R V-Spec GTR Nur Edition owner. Sure, some think they are “entitled” to some things, it’s a forum, let them vent. It’s clear what the packages offered give you, there is no disputing that. I fight for all players on here when its comes to CONTENT. Focus there.
I have Dom’s Charger, alot of others didn’t feel the Furious movie offer was worth it and some live in other regions and couldn’t get it anyway. Same for the Fallout car, most users probably got it for Steam (I did), why bother with the inferior X1 version?
Alot of users here are also collectors, maybe they want access to all the cars available, so hopefully down the line Turn 10 will release some sort of way to get all these “unicorns” and other special cars.
I suggested that the unicorns be given out in two ways - the base car, for participation or hitting an easily-attainable mark, and then the car with a special tune on it that was community-developed and exclusive to those who have the skill and ability to hit the very top of the boards.
Naturally, it got shouted down by all of the elites as “being too easy”, and “next thing you know, they’ll be giving out lollipops.”
Now that’s a great idea. That’s basically the jist of my argument, the whole base car as a prize, nothing else. This should never happen. I ran into the same thing, “I want to feel special for my win” kinda replies (not entitlement?).
Thankfully the ongoing Trofeo series is a step in the right direction.
If you are ticked you shouldn’t spend your money on stuff that isn’t even detailed. They could have offered two packs worth of civics and they STILL would have fulfilled their promise. They stated the number of cars and car packs, nothing more than the kind of cars (or limos pfttt). Next time you shouldn’t spend your money if you don’t know enough about what you’re getting. For all those who are good with what they got, good on you.
OP stop defending greedy video game companies. Paid for DLC is pure greed and the norm now for all video games. Video games are becoming more expensive because of pay for DLC. People wouldn’t act so entitled if they didn’t need to spend nearly double the cost of a game for extra DLC and then find out they have to spend more to get the complete version of the game. It never ends with how much extra you have to spend to get everything the game has to offer. Games now are becoming like “Freemium” smart phone games real quick. If anyone is entitled it’s the companies who make games with all this pay for DLC. They feel entitled to leave game content out of the game and charge people extra for it. They do it purely with the intention of making as much money as they possibly can. They feel entitled to do so because every other gaming company does the exact same thing.
There is no need to defend companies that act just as entitled as you think the consumers act. I actually like Unicorn cars better then DLC because you don’t have to buy them, just earn them. Like how video games were in the past. If you worked hard enough you could unlock extra content. But I’m 100% positive DLC cars in Forza will heavily outweigh the number of Unicorn cars. Because T10 makes no money on Unicorns so it isn’t a top priority to them. People have a valid reason to not want to continuously pay extra money for content that should’ve been in the game from day one. DLC is releasing a game that isn’t complete early for full price. If you want the complete game you have to pay whatever price the company see’s fit you should pay for it. Greed, and nothing less.
I am not defending “greedy video game companies”. I am talking solely about the people here.
Nowhere in my OP did I say “Thow dare T10 charge XX amount for whatever”, or “the Porsche Expansion should have been included with the Car Pass”, or anything like that, frankly it is what it is. If they charge extra for it (frankly I totally understand why considering the circumstances with Porsche and EA) then they choose to. They are within every moral and legal right to do so.
Fair enough, there are money grabbers in this business, and though T10 may not be 100% a perfect role model, I disagree with you in almost all of the entirety of what you’ve written, but I’m not going to kick up a fuss, as I said, everyone is entitled to their opinion.
As for the unicorn thing? I feel that was directed at me and let me tell you something very clear from the start, if I want them, I WILL work for them. The insinuation that ‘if I work harder I can get them’ is something I feel about those who, as stated in my OP, feel they deserve them because they’ve spent decent money into the game. To then have it directed at me feels a little disheartening. like the idea because they’re something to work towards, something to do that makes the game for enjoyable. I gave a damn good go at the Aston Vantage Bounty, and I didn’t get it because I simply could not drive the Wraith fast enough.
The key is I gave it a go, and damn good go. Just over 400 miles trying, I would consider, a ‘good go’.
Make of that what you will, but I still 100% stand by my OP.
No please explain why you agree so much with paying tons of extra money for a $60 dollar video game. I would really like to hear what you rationale is for liking and agreeing with being charged extra for something that should already be in the game which you paid $60 to $100 dollars for. In a couple years I wonder if you will be happy to pay for whatever obscene amount of DLC companies decide to release. The problem with DLC is it is getting out of hand and will only continue to get worse and more expensive. Hollywood is already catching on with releasing two part film franchises to double their money. Twilight Part 1 & 2, Hunger Games Part 1 & 2, Avengers Part 1 & 2, etc. This is the problem with DLC, it will get worse and worse as time goes on. I really want to know why you think it’s so great and don’t see the entitlement from game studios while pointing your finger at consumers for being entitled. I gave you reasons why I disagreed with what you said, you haven’t given me any reasons why you disagree with me. I really hope you don’t work for T10.
My reasoning? Ok. I agree with it purely because I very much enjoy the game, it’s a hobby of mine, if you will, and hobbies cost money.
Let’s look at a different hobby. Photography for example. My father does photography and I can tell you it’s similar in a few key areas. He boughrt a camera, spent a fair few £100s. Then, he upgraded the lens, made the camera body better, upgraded the camera model, bought photo editing software, and so on. Think of the camera as the base game, and the extras as DLCs.
To the Average Joe, that base camera would have been enough - perfectly adequate for day to day use. To some, those better lenses, models, softwares, and what have you, are something to get, something that makes that camera better.
Sound familiar?
Maybe you need another example. Computers. To most, a simple PC is very much enough to live with - as long as there’s Google and Solitaire, we’re happy. Others, that’s not quite nearly enough. Gamers strive for the very best; they upgrade components (I would label, but computer literate I am not) to make their PC adequate to what they see as being an appropriate level for gaming. Again, the base PC is the game, those expensive addon parts are the DLC.
Again, familiar?
It really doesn’t matter where you look, this principle of ‘buy basic, add later’ is very much a common occurrence, and frankly will be for the foreseeable future.
If you don’t like paid dlc then I assume you would be happy with the disc version of games with no extra content ie the cars and tracks on the disc would be all you get period.
Oh and by the way because there is no additional revenue stream the total cars in the games would need to be cut down to NFS levels ie less than 100 cars per game.
As an observer of Forza 2-4 and now Forza 5-6 I can “observe” what looks like a business model that allows them to build up the list of cars over mulitple games to an insane number of cars, many of which most players will not get to drive.
As an observer of NFS they do not seem to use the same business model so only have less than 100 cars per game.
