Who here uses sim steering?

Sorry, more Forza 4 refugee questions. I found it was able to make me more precise in Forza 4… but in FM6 it seems to make the curbs crazy sensitive and spin prone. Is there any upside to sim steering the same way there is for turning ABS/TCS/STM off?

Some people like sim steering, other don’t. It really depends on what you think and feel responds better.

With that in mind consider this: a steering wheel has anywhere from 720 -920 degrees of travel. That means that tiny 3-5 degree changes in steering will only slightly change the slip angle of the front tires. Your Xbox controller has maybe 30-40 degrees of travel - full left to full right. Therefor you can go from full-lock left to full-lock right by only moving the stick 30-40 degrees, where using a wheel would require you to spin the wheel two and a half times around fully to go from lock to lock,

Sim steering tries to jam all 720-920 degrees of that control into the limited 30-40 degrees of available stick travel. The end result is that sim steering will seem hyper-sensitive. Sim steering is meant for people using a wheel, but not everyone follows this logic. They use what they like.

Some people like it because they’re able to comtrol steering input in very minute increments, but my experience is that only very few people have this ability.

One thing sim-steering does NOT do is prove you’re a better or faster driver. I know plenty of racers who are faster using controllers (this is in Forza only, other games vary) than they are using a wheel. If yoy think using sim-steering makes you superior to anyone not using sim-steering, then knock yourself out. What-ever makes you happy.

I think sim steering turns better with the controller, I’ve messed with it but if you make an error on a turn you are finished. Car will just go flying of the track. I would only use it for leaderboarding but some people I know use it with the controller all the time. You need to be very precise. I don’t use it much. It’s real purpose is more for people with wheels.

I have a wheel (TMX) and used the CSR for Forza 4. I tried it and it wasn’t too bad, except for the effing curbs. Curbs in FM6 are like banana peels in Mario Kart. I don’t think one makes you any better or worse, but I do feel like the assists can hold you back speed wise. I know for sure ABS/STM did… jury is still out on TCS… I definitely got faster in FM4 after using sim steering for a while.

Most assists do slow you down. TCS can help game the really powerful cars but you have to have fine enough control and anticipation to not have it activate. TCS, for the fast guys, is only to prevent a really bad mistake ruining their race. If you have enough talent and you can train your accelerator finger to never go overboard you’ve pretty much ruled out the need for TCS.

The really fast guys need a certain amount of slipping to get the car to do what they want. Assists do their best to prevent slippage, both under braking and accelerating.

If your driving cars that feel like they understeer to much

I.e.

Modern GT AUDI r8 flying lizard

All wheel drive cars

Front wheel drive cars

They all go a lot quicker using sim steering however hot lapping and racing are two very different things as sim twitch is a #$%#

There is controller settings available in forza for dead zones and there is also the forza app on the dashboard too further that

logitech G920 user here. I recently switched to SIM steering and increased my degrees of rotation from 450* to 660* just because it makes the game MUCH more like a true SIM in my opinion. You have to be very careful with SIM steering. I am faster and much more consistent with normal steering at 450 degrees of wheel rotation. But SIM steering is much more fun if you are into the SIM experience and not focused on winning every race.

I do think faster lap times are possible with SIM , but the consistency is going to be a challenge.

In general sim steering is used when driving slower/understeery FWD/AWD cars, because the benefits of the increased turn-in are much higher and the risk of sim twitch is minimal. I’m currently participating in a MINI Cooper challenge series with some incredibly fast drivers and all are using sim, even during the races. If you do decide to try it out be very wary in the first couple turns as it is very easy to spin out with cold tires.
