What custom music you rely on for racing games?

For some time now a lot of racing games have turned to more and more generic music, which leads us to either having to put custom music on our consoles (like on 360), or use streaming apps.

The only time I ever use Spotify is for racing games.

This is meant more as a fun discussion than to criticize the game(s), but what custom music do you tend to rely on for your racing soundtrack needs?

For the longest time now I (for some reason) always favor putting on some Jerry Cantrell (Alice in Chains) solo stuff. Love his music. I’ve done this as far back as Project Gotham Racing 3/4 on 360.

If not him, typically put on a 90s / 2000s alternative mix, one hit wonders, stuff like that.

Also gotta put out that Vice City soundtrack every now and then. :+1:

I have been catching up on Youtube videos about Gaming News and Footy Podcasts while racing

Agreed, Vice City Soundtrack goes well with EVERYTHING!

You never, EVER play music while racing a sim. Only amateurs and noobs do that.

Right? The only music I need is the sound of my engine, gearbox and tires.

I learn when to shift each car by ear, so no music for me.

Very childish take unless this meant to be a stealth parody comment.

To answer OP’s question, I just have various playlists for racing based on certain themes. I’ve got several soundtracks from racing games on my Spotify account. Motorstorm, Midnight Club, Test Drive, you name it. I also have my own fanmade Horizon mix since Horizon 5’s soundtrack was pretty poor in my opinion, and I have two classic rock playlists for both racing and cruising.

Personally, racing without music is fine for short races. However, anything longer than 5 minutes without music is just a snoozefest, especially if you’re in the lead for a majority of the race.

This was a primary reason why I dropped Motorsport 2 so quickly after I played it for the first time in 2022. Fantastic game, menu music was awesome, but no race music made the whole experience feel lifeless.

Also, Motorsport is still in the simcade space. Everybody who thinks Motorsport is a full-on simulator takes themselves and the game way too seriously.

Phew, dodged that bullet. Otherwise I would be an amateur and a noob. Fortunately FM isn’t a simulator, so we are safe to listen whatever we want.

I do hope MysticalTato533 wears a full fire r3tardant (why is this word censored???) racing gear and a FIA licensed helmet, whenever MysticalTato533 plays simulators, because otherwise… well nobody wants to be a noob and an amateur.

With the type of music they are using on their youtube channel I am glad there’s no music in game. I usually chatter with Crew Chief in other racing games but that can’t be done with any Forza Games unfortunately, listening audiobooks instead.

This ain’t iRacing or ACC.

I should have worded it in a more precise way. Why is the word filter using such a lousy algorithm? (question to mods) That kind of string searches to filter out or find word x are used as exercises on the first year of any IT curriculum that involves code writing. It just baffles me.

I listen whatever music I feel like listening, but synth wave (and its sub genres) has been my go to genre for the past 8 or so years as a music choice for racing games (excluding WRC games, where it’s distraction… too busy staying on road).

The music I listen-listen I rarely use as a background (includes AiC as well).

I’m using Ridge Racer (PSP) songs while playing FM8. Actually suits the game very well.

Not childish. Simply true. Do as you will but no serious sim racer drives with music. Been doing this for over 25yrs and I know for a fact what I’m saying is how most serious racers feel.

Except it is a simulator?

No, it’s not and neither is Gran Turismo (regardless of them labelling themselves as Real Driving Simulator). Closest thing to a simulator on consoles are the two Assetto Corsa games, on PC the selection is a lot bigger.

Let’s not derail the topic. If you don’t listen to music, thats cool. Nothing wrong with that.

I need to get around to finally building up a playlist of PGR 1/2 music to listen to. Throw in some Metropolis Street Racer as well.

Hit shuffle

Any words for the lifetime gamepad forza users…
