Dcs is a combat flight sim. Theres a plane called the f/aF18 super hornet that’s really popular in the game. Figured that’s what your name Was inspired by.
It was inspired by the jet, but not for that reason. My father worked on jets in the military, went to the hangars a few times as a kid.
Whatever the mysteries of the skill rating are, it will undoubtedly be a tweaked version of Microsoft’s truskill system, it’s actually a very clever system. (Look it up)
When people see a sudden massive increases / decreases in rating, it’s most likely due to the system trying to establish a baseline skill rating. (Needs more data) at this point the rating is volatile. The more data the system has, the less volatile the impact of a single race will have on the rating.
I have a theory (and that’s all it is) as to why so many are sitting in the 4900’s. Could it be that they are protective of this score, once achieved and are then less likely to risk it going down?
Either way there’s far too much emphasis put on this arbitrary number. i was given a score of 4500 after the qualifier series, when i won 2 of the 3 and finished 2nd in the other. Last time I played I was something like 4985, had a race came last after being sent to the shadow realm three times and lost 30 points.
Truskill was used in FH4 for its ranked mode. In that game, the + and - element of beating or losing to lower ranked players meant that most congregated around the middle ranks, with a gradual decrease to only a very small percentage in the top ratings. In Free For All, it was very tough to get to 4,850 (grandmaster level) and any loss to a lower ranked player would be penalised substantially.
I suspect that you are right that Truskill is also probably being used here. However, they’ve clearly set it so that (a) it’s easy to get a high rating and (b) it’s quite hard to then drop significantly. Coupled with the fact that ratings aren’t displayed in a ranking list, I would anticipate that it’s been set at a level which isn’t intended to be competitive. It’s just to give people a nice feeling that they have a good ranking. Play enough online and you will end up somewhere near 4,999 if you are vaguely competent.
The Forza stream a couple of weeks ago was quite instructive in this regard. The average rating of the convoy I think was 4,997 and the presenter said their own rating was nowhere near that. I suspect everyone else in that convoy was at 4,999 and, whilst a couple were up there with the very best, there was still quite a wide skill range.

Ouch.
Edit: well i got no idea why that didn’t work but im just leaving it as is.
from S to A to S 4400+ with stupid penalty.
It was actually first used in FM6 to decide what league ranking you were placed in, beginner to pinnacle. 1-4.
It was also used to determine how many points you were awarded for a given race. I.e you could finish 8th and get more points than the person who finished first, if you had exceeded your expected finish position.
It had its floors but it’s been my favourite MP experience on any game, by a long way.
Probably an exaggeration but 90% of those who have voted are over 4,000 points. It’s not a stretch to think that is probably replicated across the board, so that the ratings are very top heavy.
I’m an A4200 and I suck.
My Skill Rating ist around 4700 and Safety is A atm. Won a lot of races last week in the X lobbys. Most guys cant control their cars and all you have to do was: Drive consistently and you will allways make the podium.
Yesterday safety was S. Then I do a GT3 race at Yas Marina. Guy in front doesn`t make the corner, rammed me while rejoining and I got 4 seconds for it. Today in R class lobby a morron drift the whole race. He rammed me and others during practice and in the race right at the start - another 4 seconds. So sick of those people!
Oh, I have a theory: Most rammers or toxics childish players use energy drink liverys or fancy colors like pink, purple etc.
yesterday I streamed consecutive wins for 8 hours straight, until the second to last X class race some dude in an F1 car dive bombs T1 causing me to get shoved off the track.
Needless to say I never reached skill rating 5000. The skill and safety ratings are a joke.
Here’s my thoughts on the Skill and Safety ratings…
I consider myself a clean racer. I have my moments don’t get me wrong, usually in the heat of a battle, but I do not deliberately ram or pit other drivers. And if I do pit someone accidentally, I will willingly slow down and let them back by me. Yeah, it hurts me in the race order, but I believe in fairness. With that being said, the problem I have with the Skill and Safety rating is that with the penalty system still not working properly, it’s easy to game the system, or worse, have the system game you. If I legitimately earn a penalty it’s no big deal to me. However, the penalty system sometimes hands out excessively harsh penalties at times. At least that how I feel it is. For instance, today I went from S to B after getting penalties for “avoidable contact”, when a car careening off track somewhere at VIR comes flying out of nowhere (and yes, I was checking all around me) and T-bones me into the shadow realm. 4 seconds for that. Then later in that same race I got another 2.75 for another “avoidable contact” when I got caught up in a pile up. I saw it coming, was on the brakes and off the throttle, doing all I could to avoid contact. Almost got through it when another car spun someone else in the wreck right into me. So even when doing all I could to stay out of trouble, it found me. I get it, it happens. But the system seems to have a hard time when some wrecks happen. I don’t know what the fix is (beyond full damage in MP racing). So while technically I am an S safety rating IMO, right now I’m classified as a B rating.
And for the record, while I know I could go into “ghost” mode, I don’t/ Because if it were real life racing, that is not an option. That attitude may be a bit silly, but it’s how I play.
Had to dig up this thread to brag about how I finally made it above 4,900. Probably won’t last long, but I did it lol.
I peaked at S/4929 and have been going downward since for no discernable reason, currently at A/4906. Consistently moving up positions without penalties or contact. This rating system feels impossible to progress past a certain point.
Currently S/4978
Not done any races since the update yet, curious to see if the matchmaking changes affect who I race against.
Last I checked I was S/4990, I tend to only get a point or two higher than that before I inevitably stumble across either a demo derby or a track/car combo that just doesn’t gel for me (I’m also often not in the meta car for that series so it can put me behind the 8-ball a little from the start) and tumble down to the ~4950s.
S-4950 for me. I am pleased to say the off track penalties aren’t as horrible as before but the collision ones are more drastic even if you get pushed into someone.
I’m fairly confident that the skill rating is pretty much only based on your finishing position/skill rating at the time, compared to your opponents. Starting last and driving through the field to finish 2nd would therefore probably be worth less points than starting on pole and finishing 1st.
