Upgrading from internal HDD to external HDD

I’m gonna upgrade my xbox one to a 4TB external HDD.
However I’m not sure what will happen with my savegames.
If i manage to screw up the game saves to my new external HDD,
will i lose all of my cars?

I have bought like every available DLC and cars of 20k tokens and I don’t want to lose them.

I dont know if the cars/DLC are linked to my save

Thanks in advance

You’re not going to mess anything up. When you plug in your external Microsoft has made it very easy to understand what you’re doing and to get your data moved around if you’d like. As for game saves, they’re in the cloud, so no worries there.

Got my external HDD coming tomorrow, as said above if it’s as simple as Xbox 360 then you have nothing to worry about.

Thanks both!

Skreamsies, which one do you buy ?
I want to buy the WD My Book 4TB ^^

I just went for a simple 2TB Samsung, as long as it works it’s fine by me haha. Cloud will always have the backup and the only game I’m worried about save wise is Forza which will always stay on the console for me

cool beans. i have one more question though. are all of my cars + dlc linked on my gamertag?

im worried that if my hard drive for example dies, and i buy a new hard drive and reinstall forza horizon 2 on it, that everything (especially my cars) will be gone, despite the cloud save game.

so if i get a brand new xbox one or hard drive for example, and install the game again; will i have all of my cars back?

Your saved games are not just on the cloud. There is a local copy. That copy will move to the external if you ask for the game to move. if you lose that saved game you are up for a multi hour resync. Moving from internal to external should not lose the local save though.

I have most of my save games on an external and only one or 2 on internal depending what I am playing that week, move them around all the time no issues at all.

If you are doing that because you think internal is quicker think again.

The external provides the best performance.

So basically as long as my forza horizon 2 game save is stored in the cloud (automatically, right?) i don’t need to be worried losing all of my purchased cars and dlc whatsoever?

because i have been seeing threads on this forum lately about people losing their cars / saves etc…

  1. What you have stored in the cloud is a licence. The cars are already on your hard drive (as part of your install/update) regardless of whether or not you have a licence to use them.

  2. I think the game save loss/corruption thing is due to problems with server syncing.

purchased DLC is linked to your gamertag
but cars purchased in the game as well as gifted cars are in your save.

You should move ALL games to external drive where possible. It means the game is running from that drive, freeing up the internal drive for system access and DVR use. It stops lots of stuttering in games as the internal drive can choke on too many requests as it’s a cheap 2.5" drive. External HDD on USB3 is more than fast enough to run games, many load quicker this way too.
I use a Seagate 2TB and Western Digital 3TB, both run without any issues and make things smoother and faster.
If you have trouble getting an external drive to register or stay connected, go into Xbox one settings and change power setting for HDD’s to always on. Instructions in this link;

Remember, the external device needs to be USB 3.0. Further details are here in this Xbox One Support information: Xbox Support

Well got mine setup yesterday as I thought you have nothing to worry about losing anything.

Plug in>Popup come on screen letting you setup>Done

Then you can install and move games whenever you want. Currently reinstalling BF4

Reinstalling? Isn’t it as simply as moving all your game data from the internal to the external one?

Hi everyone, I´m thinking about getting an external HDD and I´d like to ask whether 5400RPM USB 3.0 would be sufficent enough to get rid of all the stuttering and sound bugs. Or is it better to pay more for 7200 one? Thanks for answer

The internal HDD is 5400rpm - 7200rpm would be a plus.

Yup I understand that internal runs at 5400rpm, what I´ve heard of is that even upgrading from internal to external USB 3.0 could really improve performance, 7200 has the bonus of faster loading times. Can somebody please confirm whether 5400 makes the game run better? What I do not want is to waste money on hdd only to find that the game runs the same
