Turning off 'allow passthrough' in xbox settings makes this game sound better

…yet does the opposite for pretty much every other game. FH5 definitely sounds better when I turn this option on. Dunno why I haven’t tested this until now, but here we are. When I turned this off just now, instantly got a good bit of the dynamic range and depth back.

Weird.

Update: Passthrough seems to be broken again. I tested several games and they all sound better with passthrough off. FH5 included. Passthrough used to make everything sound better on my rig. Not the case anymore. sigh Will Xbox ever get this feature right?

Is this a setting in fm23 or in xbox settings.

xbox settings

If i use a soundbar dont i need that though?

My setup is xbx->soundbar->tv all with hdmi cables.

Do you think it’ll make a difference if im using headphones? And also why do you think it would make other games sound worse?

No, you don’t need passthrough on in Xbox settings. It’s supposed to bypass any processing the xbox is doing so that your receiver or soundbar can handle it all. Turning it on rn, however, seems to make everything sound worse. At least it does on my system. Odd. It used to make everything sound better. I think this feature may have been broken again. Just tested it in FH5 and it sounds worse with passthrough on as well.

Yeah. Passthrough is absolutely broken and worthless on Xbox again.

Dolby Atmos Passthrough doesn’t affect games. It merely allows content already encoded in Dolby Atmos (e.g. Netflix, Disney+, Blu-Ray) to bitstream to one’s AVR, etc. With streaming media it’s usually lossy Dolby Digital Plus codec with Dolby Atmos metadata. Blu-Ray use usually Dolby TrueHD with Dolby Atmos metadata. In those cases, the audio output mode of the Xbox switches to bitstreaming.

Xbox games are output in Dolby MAT 2.0, i.e. Linear PCM with Dolby Atmos metadata. The Xbox is set to Dolby Atmos output in the console settings and the output mode remains unchanged when games load.

No. You’re wrong. There’s definitely a difference when I turn this off. Dynamic range returns, surround width returns, the audio magic returns. Idk what to tell you.

Maybe this isn’t supposed to happen, but it definitely does. For me at least. My audio experience is considerably better with passthrough off. Used to be opposite.

It affects games too. Take it or leave it. I turned this off and everything sounds considerably better. Idc what nonsense you find as ‘evidence’ of your claim.

I love how some of you think I just make this stuff up. Really brightens my day. Do all you can to discredit what I say without first testing to see for yourselves. Find something better to do.

It’s cool. I’ll sit here and enjoy my discovery. All these games sound great on my rig now with passthrough off.

I only seek to help others out. Unbelievable.

Wait a sec, didnt you make a post about the dolby app getting updated making your sound better before and everyone said it was impossible ?

You’re a real Giordano Bruno of the xbox audio world.

Ill give it a shot tomorrow and post my results.

I didn’t hear from a single dev of said app that it was impossible. Until I do, I stand by what I said. When I say things sound better on this fairly expensive dolby atmos rig I’ve put together because I change a setting or an app update improves it, I’m not making stuff up. How does doing so benefit anyone? I mean really.

I only seek to help others.

I am so glad I have lossless PCM 7.1 sound, playing the game on PC.

Placebo effect ppl that spread their “wisdom” in forums are funny.

 Whatever. Call it whatever you like. Idc. I’m done trying to help anyone out around here.

Furthermore. I find it amusing that you some how think that 7.1 PCM is better than spatial.

Well i appreciate it. Rock on my man.

Some ppl are happy with regular lossless surround sound, I don’t need atmos. The quality of PCM 7.1 is still perfectly fine the only thing missing is the atmos effect.

There are barely any games that support it and in my country there is also barely any movie that supports it. I will switch to atmos when it’s worth it. Maybe in 5 to 10 years or something. I have an atmos AVR but don’t have such speakers yet. Maybe I buy a pair, I am not sure yet.

Edit: Nah I will buy atmos speakers the next time I buy a new avr. I will probably use 7.1.4 then, it’s the most reasonable setup IMO.

My current DENON-X1700H DAB did cost around 750€ the 7.1.4 AVR DENON-X3800H would cost 1700€. I currently not see the point yet to upgrade. Maybe in a few years I will. And I don’t think atmos sounds good with just 2 atmos speakers, it should be 4.

Don’t do that man, I appreciate that you are trying to help. Ignore the know-it-alls. I have made significant findings that have been overlooked and scoffed at by some, simply does not matter to me, I improved the look of my game vastly and if people simply don’t want to take part, so be it. Helping others is a great quality brother keep up the good vibes man.

It’s just so disheartening when all they wanna do is completely dismiss what I have to say because it’s not stated in some internet article somewhere. Maybe I’m just that much of a nut that I’ll sit here and test every possible combination of settings to get the best possible sound and visuals that I can. There’s a reason that I spend so much money on these toys that I have. The treatment I get here from these know it alls is exactly what made me leave the audio engineering business. I refuse to play by their rules so everything I say is automatically dismissed. I’m good on that. I’ll just keep my findings to myself.

Just wanted to post my thoughts. I had a cheap set of head phones looking for a way to boost the volume, purchased dts app. Sound was lower. Threw away my junk head phones and got me a set of turtle beach head phones wow what a difference.

Side note the audio is way louder in stereo vs dts app in my Xbox settings. I don’t understand why. Seen no difference w pass through on or off but I mainly use headphones and no surround sound receiver so maybe that’s why?

Stereo is lossless audio, aka. uncompressed or PCM.

DTS and Atmos are compressed/lossy formats.
