I don’t think I read that interview quite the same way you did, but yeah, straight-up admitting that the higher-ups were so hands off that they didn’t see Redfall coming was…not confidence-inspiring in their future endeavors. It’s definitely time to start questioning, aloud even, what else they’ve let go unnoticed.
What interview are we all talking about? Link?
If it’s not out by September I’ll be jumping ship.
Phil did an interview with Kinda Funny, which is either an XBox-friendly podcast or actually XBox-affiliated (I haven’t sorted out which yet). Notable points of interest:
- Microsoft was “hands-off” for much of Redfall’s development, according to Phil, even after Bethesda/Zenimax was acquired by the company. Phil also says this changed for Starfield, and Microsoft was more directly involved; how much hasn’t been disclosed.
- Internal reviews conducted by Microsoft for Redfall indicated the game would have an overall median score of 70, according to Phil. For some perspective, that’s about 14 points higher than where the game currently sits on Metacritic.
- Phil talked at length about XBox’s standing in the console race, taking on a tone viewed largely as pessimistic and disagreeing with the notion that putting out quality games would improve that standing. One quote that has garnered significant controversy is as follows: “Even if Starfield comes out and is an 11/10 game, it won’t convince people to sell their PS5s.”
If you’re wondering whether Phil mentioned anything about Forza, the answer is no save for a mention of the game coming soon.
Remarkable candor aside, that interview offered nothing good, particularly for the future of games like Forza Motorsport. If Microsoft was so hands-off about Redfall that they let that slip through not just unnoticed, but even with demonstrably false assumptions about it’s quality, what does that mean for Motorsport? What does that hands-off posture mean for Horizon, which has seen strong drops in quality across the last two games? From everything I’ve seen since last week, it seems like XBox is putting all of their eggs into Starfield’s basket - and that is an exceptionally dodgy proposition given Bethesda’s penchant for shoveling crap out of the door.
When that fails, it’s going to fall on Turn 10 and Forza to be the killer app. Good thing they’ve been showing off that they are capable of handling the job, right?
Right?
Has anyone seen this? It’s no like this change the perspective of the upcoming FM, but I think I haven’t seen anybody mention it.
I’m really really sick of the teases, if June 11 rolls around and we don’t have a definitive idea of why we should even care about this game, I’m jumping ship. Just show us the bloody game already, no cinematics and no fixations on tree leaves down to the cellular level. JUST SHOW US.
- Campaign mode details
- Livery editor improvements (If there even are any…)
- Remodeled silvia and other infamously crap models
- Actual depth in car customization
- Forza aero banished to hell where it belongs
- Long-requested features finally implemented
- Long-requested maps returning (we all know that won’t happen)
- Better wheel support (I don’t even use a wheel but wheel users really do deserve better)
Ive given up any hope of this game or franchise in general being any good. Ill still play it on game pass but not giving any money to buy it.
This game will be a giant mess and be no different then FM7
I think that belongs to the boss of Turn 10. A few years ago there were some articles about it: him choosing the colour etc, then the actual delivery. Those articles were posted on the Forza Hub, when it still had community staff to post stuff on a weekly basis. When those staff members were car enthusiasts rather than “wacky” video presenters.
There’s something I don’t understand. Is there a policy for Turn10 or XGS in general to not engage with community when the overall discourse of their game is negative? I can’t find a single reply in this whole forum or other platform from devs to clarify the state of the game. Not even a “Guys, just wait for the finished product, don’t judge too soon…”, simply nothing. Not even a video showcasing handling, gameplay, new features. This lack of communication worries me.
Tango had a full year to port Ghostwire Tokyo to the XSX and… well, we’ve seen what happened.
The XSX is definitely not “far more advanced” than the PS5, it uses off-the-shelf RDNA 2 features from the AMD GPUs and the XVA to take care of the SSD, but the SSD is slower than that of the PS5.
The One X had a healthy advantage over the PS4 Pro despite selling next to nothing and the devs took advantage of that… If the XSX had the same advantage over the PS5 we’d be seeing similar results.
We’ve seen with FH5 the XSX can handle great graphics, but it can’t do miracles (neither can the PS5 as Polyphony is forced to sacrifice world assets for performance). RT is taxing on the hardware and personally I thought it was a dumb idea to use the feature in live gameplay at the expense of other, more important things.
Also, I posted that in April, we’re in May and nothing… Is Microsoft saving FM for the showcase? Maybe, but why? It’s about time the game’s features are shown.
T10ManteoMax did just that in March in this very thread, but was immediately attacked so why would anyone bother saying anything again? I want more info, but history says Turn10 will make their announcement a few months before release.
And that’s the problem, he can come in and say x, but he’ll immediately get attacked for saying x when he could’ve said y or z instead, when he likely isn’t cleared to say something about y and z
He was “attacked” because he resorted to the one play he often has when confronted with hard questions, which is toss up a boilerplate response and accuse everyone of not being understanding, then run away and go radio-silent until his bosses ping him repeatedly.
GTX 3060 is not powerful enough to do much stuff without compromise.
Unlike the rest of them he actually took the time to respond, and your response is to try to make it seem like he’s at fault? The blame here lies with T10 and not really manteomax. It’s not like he’s cleared to say anything at the moment.
Plenty of blame to go around, frankly. And he works for T10, anyway, so…¯_(ツ)_/¯
Harsh? Maybe. But I’m sorry; I just don’t have the sympathy necessary to swallow their nonsense anymore. With the current state of things not just in the Forza franchise, but in the video game industry at large and XBox in slightly sharper focus, no one should be making excuses for them to hide behind and they shouldn’t be allowed to hide behind anything at all. June 11 is going to be Turn 10’s third at-bat to try and sell people on this project…if they even show up; seems like XBox’s official press release for the showcase would say something about one of their OG game studios, but nope - it’s Starfield or bust, baby.
Not even showing in the up and coming games.
Technically, it’s their fourth, but I’m being generous and not counting 2020’s teaser as an attempt.
Yeah I a really confused as to what’s going on here. Seems like vapourware. Seriously.
And then, there’s this: a whole article about how Xbox is going to find its way going forward, and not a mention – not one – about FM. Plenty of talk about FH5, though: Starfield Feels like Xbox's Last Chance at Redemption - IGN
Unreal.
