Severe understeer

Its not supposed to be a sim. If you check out say the LaFerrari in FH2 you will see the difference in handling, ive discovered ive had to spend much more time tuning to get it to turn as FH2 but the handling model has been altered I guess.

It’s not supposed to be a sim, but a simcade leaning toward arcade, and that’s exactly what it is. If you want to play some physicless game where you can full brake late into the corner and still make the turn, go play Need For Speed. You need to apply yourself a bit in this game to do well so I’ll say it outright: get good.
I play with all assists off, sim steering and a steering wheel and I have no issues with understeer, regardless of the car or powertrain. And I can trail brake just fine into corners. If the AI gives you trouble, lower your difficulty. Drivatars match your car, so if you come to race with a fully upgraded car, without bothering tuning it up properly, you bet the AI is going to beat you. So make some efforts to drive better, tune your car better, or just race with stock cars and lower your difficulty. But the handling is just fine. And if you are still not happy, go play some true arcade game like Burnout and such.

My brother plays the new Need for Speed, i simply can not play that game to save my life. The cars auto counter steer when drifting, that does not work for me, if you want to make a left turn you rip the e brake and turn left. That concept will not click for me.

Did I say it is supposed to be a sim. I said it feels just right to me.

Watch your replays; the feel of the new game sacrifices plowing for high speed stability. Its not as much understeer, as it is lac of steer. Pay particular attention to the front wheels early in the corners. The fix is pretty raceist, lol Slow in Fast out. Not my style at all, but it beats the insanity in rewinds. My only issue is bizzar controller pauses and inaction. Sacrificing clean for “WHATS UP WITH THIS F IN CONTROLLER/GAME; ITS A CONSPIRACY!!” and skill chain losses. Still Diggin the game though. Hope that helped. Really not sure if the wheel would experience the same issue. : D

I think the understeer isn’t an issue for me. Correct speed on corner entry is key. Once you have that, then you can begin to tune for mid corner balance. I love the tarmac for hot lapping and the scrambles for the most fun.

I haven’t had any problem with understeer, bit of aero if its equipped / bit of toe in on the rear / ARB adjustments and few other odds and ends cleared it all up for me. Guess it kind of depends if your using a controller or a wheel to, I found even with the adjustments in the dead zones the controller had understeer before I got my G27 working and that went away for the most part just switching to wheel and having more control.

I have driven a few cars in the game that have heavy understeer but most cars seem fine to me.
I have even imported some tunes from FH2 and they feel the same as they did in that game.

How do you import tunes from FH2? And can you also import paints and/or decals?

Using the rally suspension helps some for some reason, however, I have noticed when it occurs on some vehicles it looks like the front wheels on the vehicle are actually hovering. This issue doesn’t happen on every turn but I’ve have spent a fair amount of time playing every forza since 1 and I must say there is defiantly something unusual happening.

Increase rear anti roll bar, decrease rear decel diff down to about 20-30 could be a start… If still having trouble lower the front more or raise the rear up…

All my tunes are uploaded too so feel free to try them out

You who say understeering is not an ussue or to you who say its because of the handling model, you are missing what’s really causing this understeering issue. Look at the front wheels as you turn around hairpins. The wheels [Mod Edit - Abbreviated profanity, profanity and profanity that is disguised but still alludes to the words are not permitted - D] straight. they don’t turn until you have nearly stopped. Some cars got a greater steering lock which seems to help a little. But the problem is the damn steering assist. if this happens for those who are using a wheel in the game something is seriously messed up because steering wheels don’t need [Mod Edit - Abbreviated profanity, profanity and profanity that is disguised but still alludes to the words are not permitted - D] steering assists. And gamepads are getting the steering assist at as if they were used as a keyboard where players steer max left or right. It’s [Mod Edit - Abbreviated profanity, profanity and profanity that is disguised but still alludes to the words are not permitted - D] analog steering. this pissed me off in “The Crew” aswell. then we got the option to use the gamepads as steering wheels and all of a sudden, the understeer was no longer an issue, it was gone, finally you could steer quick and has hard as you wanted no matter what speed you were going in or what ever gear you were in. The steering in this game is far too slow and far too limited because of this ridicoulusly overly assisted steering.

I do not have this problem at all.

My front wheels do what I ask.

I can only assume that people who have this problem either have a poor tune on the car or are simply not driving well enough so the game knows they will lose grip therefore the inbuilt steering sensitivity kicks in.

All I know is when I ask the car to turn it does and yes my tunes are a long way from the default settings because they are pretty bad.

Ah, just found this thread.

I guess it is the same problem as here:
http://forums.forza.net/turn10_postst76734_What-is-wrong-with-the-steering--some-input-is-ignored.aspx

At a certain speed/grip-threshold combination the front wheels just don’t turn in.
They are kept straight, no matter how much I steer into the turn. Although, you can always countersteer at any moment.

It’s either a bug or a very weird steering assist interfering. Either way, it is very annoying and has nothing to do with tuning or setup (which would be no less strange anyway).

Problem is, one would need to film steering input and game screen to properly illustrate the problem.
Unfortunately I can’t provide with that.
Maybe someone can.

It does have to do with tuning because if the car is tuned properly the grip threshold is higher so the game is less likely to think you are coming in too hot for the turning you are askng for.

If we yanked the steering wheel in real life like we do here we would roll the car.

What is happenng is people have garbage tunes ie the default and are coming in hot. The game knows the grip threshold will be exceeded so the steering assist kicks in.

The handling feels on point and the understeer you can tune out. I’ve done it to a few cars that were suffering from it. The drivatars on unbeatable are definitely on some other stuff though, infinite grip, infinite traction, and never make mistakes. That would be my only gripe, I can beat them, but I play with everything off, including race line and rewind, I need to be absolutely perfect just to catch up to first place who gets the benefit of starting out first and not have to deal with the other drivers. They need to make more mistakes, or mistakes period, that or let there be a time attack style qualifying to give us a chance at starting further up the pack. I know there is a perk that allows you to start up front, but I like the qualifying idea better.

So you are saying there is actually some inbuild assist (if so, it is actually disruptive and not assisting) that overrides the player’s steering input?
And that can be addressed with changes to the car’s setup?

I am not talking about coming into a corner too hot. I am talking about slower speeds combined with grip threshold (usually during slow speed drifts) when my steering input suddenly is getting ignored and the only way to make the front wheels actually turn, is to slow down.

This is not a speed problem. I am perfectly able to do all the highspeed corners in Goliath with reasonable high speeds.
The problem only occurs when pre-turn the car is already on the edge of grip (usually drifting or even slight power slides).

I will try to upload a video for better demonstration.

I understand, this happens to me only when I’m drifting. I actually looked at the telemetry while it was happening and it literally made my steering input straight forward even though I was maxed out to the left on my controller. This is extremely annoying. I thought it was my controller going bad or something, I’m glad I didn’t buy a new controller because of that. I did retune my set up and I haven’t noticed it since, but now after hearing about this speed sensitive steering I’m pretty annoyed and feel like I’ve bandaided my car to deal with it. Luckily I don’t drift that much, only to complete the drift zones, so I haven’t noticed it anywhere else. It’s sad because I thought simulation steering was supposed to be just that…simulation. I’m pretty delicate with joystick steering so I prefer full input instead of this assist.

Yes this a special “assist” that all Forza games have had. It’s commonly called Speed Sensitive Steering. Based on the speed of the vehicle combined with a calculation of its maximum grip, the Forza engine will purposefully limit the lock of the steering wheel to prevent oversteer.

This makes sense on gamepads, since at very high speeds, extremely small inputs can go way beyond the actual desired turning degree, so the game limits it to prevent this. The problem hypothesized here, is that the calculation is wrong, and the game is applying this steering lock way earlier than it should.

Adjusting a car’s tuning to increase grip influences this calculation and allows a greater degree of turning before this artificial lock kicks in.

So how do we have to tune a car to make this awful assist go away?

I still don’t understand how an assist is made to keep the wheels completely straight while the input signals for full steering lock. I mean, a bit of correction could probably be called ‘assistance’, but just keeping the wheels straight against my input. This is plain disruption, interfering against the player. Anything but assistance.

Is this only for pad users or also for people with steering wheels?
