Performance - optimizing shaders on every launch and a not connected message (1817908)

Hello Forza Team and players,

I was wondering if i am having really bad luck when it comes to FM23 on PC or is it something more players experience?

My startup process in a nutshell:

  1. Start the game
  2. Get greeted by optimizing shaders
  3. Before this process completes i get a popup saying i am not connected, retry connection
  4. I have to wait and make a guess when optimizing shaders is at 100%. If i click retry connection when its still optimizing it will get stuck in a loop or just doesn’t load at all (i gave it 10-15mins for once to see if it does anything at some point).
  5. When i get passed these start up errors, i often get stuck in a loading screen in or after the first online race. (After wasting potential 10 minutes or more trying to get into the game, i am then greeted by a potential lockup after playing practice and qualifier (again could be 10-15mins). Feels like this is more prone to happen when i do make changes to tunes or fuel loads.

TLDR Issues:

  • Consistently having to optimize shaders everytime i start the game (1 time of the day, or 5th time starting the game). I dont remember this being the case always?
  • Always seems to start in some kind of offline mode where i have to retry the connection in hopes it connects.
  • The first two problems mentioned above can come up (unfortunately very often) together, which for me sometimes get the whole game in to a loop/stuck state. This can repeat over multiple start ups of the game until one of the two works.
  • Often getting stuck in loading screen after first race of the day, or getting stuck at starting race in multiplayer. Can already see when this starts happening, basically it keeps loading during the countdown and i never get to see the grid and fuel options.

I have tried several options, including having the services used by Microsoft/XBOX/IP services start automatically, in hopes it runs before i open the game.
I am always up to date when it comes to drivers or software.
I have a 1gbps fiber connection which shows no signs of lost connections, lost packets or errors in general when i check the logs.
When i do not have the problems described above, the game pretty much works as intended. No graphical errors, no stuttering, no connection warnings. Which is why this really is frustrating, like i have to go through all this before i can finally enjoy a race.
If it makes any difference, i am playing through gamepass on PC.

Do you own Nvidia GPU ?

This topic is pretty much the same as this topic:

https://forums.forza.net/t/can-t-connect-to-the-servers/626858/106

Yep i am playing on a nvidia gpu

I’m voting and adding myself.
I have same issues as OP. Using Nvidia card and steam version of the game.

This issue is very often accompanied with another noticeable issue.
Please OP, check if you have similar issue as me.

Symptoms:

  • Same issues as OP
  • At checkpoints and passing cars do not provide car XP and no XP bar movement (SP and MP).
  • If I finish practice or qualifying laps with this issue, the game gets stuck on the next loading screen (SP and MP).

Observations:

  • When the game is launched, if no pop-ups appear (like connection issue warnings), it’s a sign that the car XP problem will occur.
  • If there are notifications of connection problems and I press retry and it loads, the issue does not occur and the game works fine.

Current known fix:

  • Exiting the game and logging out of the Windows Xbox app, then logging back in. This works 8 out of 10 times.

This issue has been quite persistent and frustrating.

I am having a constant connection issue when starting up the game. After the intro the game starts to pre-compile shaders and also tries to connect to XBOX network at the same time. But it just keeps spinning and then after about a minute informs me, that it failed to connect and offers the offline mode. When i choose to retry connection, it just spins for a minute again and then fails to connect. When I choose offline mode, it starts loading endlessly and after some 10-15 minutes I usually ALT-F4 out of the game, since nothing is happening.

The weird thing is: I can circumvent the issue by starting up the game and then turning off my WiFi during the intro section (yes I use WiFi). Then the game immediately offers me to use offline mode and when I choose that, it continues to pre-compile shaders for about 3-5 minutes. After that I get into the main menu, turn back on my WiFi and the game reconnects to my account and everything works fine from then on.

I cannot quite remember when I first noticed the issue, but I believe it was after update 6 or 7. I suspect, that this is somehow connected to the long shader pre-compilation phase. I believe before those updates, the game pre-compiled shaders and only then started connecting to XBOX network. But this is just a hunch.

Already reported this issue. (Xbox platform)

If you find a solution to this problem for pc please put the solution here.

I can’t play FH5 and now FM…

I tried:

  • Erasing and redownloading Forza, gamepass and Microsoft store and nothing.
  • Erasing all the credentials to the apps.
  • Almost evey tutorial on the internet.
  • Disabling the antivirus for the apps.

Unfortunately still present after latest game update.

Also still have issues where i get an infinite loading screen on starting a multiplayer race. Really annoying if you just practiced and qualified well.
I dont know why this happens, i change tune settings, sometimes per track. Does not seems to be making any difference if i do or do not change anything (no tune, no fuel, no tires). It just happens.

The difference since last patch is, when this happens the game crashes, before this patch i got an infinite loading screen, both basically forces the game to stop functioning or make me quit the game because there is no point in waiting 5 minutes or longer for something to happen when the race has already started without me.

Same issue here, I have tried everything and keeps happening. reaching a point where I’m just going to delete the game.

I’m having similar issues since Update 9 at least.

I get “optimizing shaders” at every launch.

It’s very common that the game fails to connect, but when I click “retry connection” it immediately connects, and I know my connection has no issues.

my connection has no issues, however since 3 days ago it no longer connects so I just deleted it, I’m beyond frustrated. Only game giving me issues since day one is this.

Hello, I have exactly the same problem.
When I start the game, the shader optimization is displayed (this happens every time I start the game) and it tries to connect. The message appears that there is no internet connection.
The internet connection is there and everything else that requires an internet connection works without any problems, except for Forza Motorsport. After that I click try again, again without success. Then I try to select offline play and it connects and when I go into the game it tries to connect again or this time in an endless loop or the image appears again with the option “Try again or offline play”
but you can press/click as much as you want and nothing changes. In the background you can somehow see that the game is loading, but it stays stuck with the image as described above.
If you do manage to play the game, it usually crashes after training or racing.
It’s starting to get annoying.
At the beginning everything works perfectly, the error first occurred for me at the beginning of the year.

i got the same problem, shaders and connecting ;(

update 10 issue still persist

The issue still persists after update 10. I tried several things:

  • Reinstalled the game
  • Tried starting the game as administrator
  • Reset Microsoft Store and the game
  • Installed the newest graphics card driver
  • I have no overlays or background apps running

Issue still persists.

A few observations I made during my many tries:

  • Connection always times out when shader compilation is somewhere below 90%. If I happen to click on retry connection, when shaders are at 90% or higher, it usually connects…but still no help (see next point).
  • If you ever get the prompt to retry connection, you are screwed, since even if it connects after that, it will run into the endless reconnect spinner (loading profile pops up, update check successful, but then you see connection failed for a millisecond and it starts reconnecting endlessly, although it already connected).
  • When doing my flight mode workaround (see my post before), the game sometimes crashes on reconnect without any message.
  • In conclusion: I can only get into the game, when I never get a connection failed prompt. So it has to connect on first try or otherwise you get the death loop.
  • Trying to choose offline mode on connection failure will never work, since the game will still try to reconnect after that, thus resulting in the death loop again.

Hope this helps in any way.

Cheers!

Same problem, connection infinite and need a big luck to connect in multiplayer. How they haven t resolve this problem yet. They just sleep and don t care.

Looks like they don’t give a f…
2 month now that i can’t play the game…
wt-f guys ? didn’t i payed good money ? did my money need to be patch for you to use it ?
2 f-ing MONTH !!! WT-F !

Yeah, they don’t give a sh*t. The ticket I opened for this gave me three steps to fix it:

one I told them I’d already tried in the original message, the deleting the credentials step

Then they said something about scrolling down to see the log-on window, which was entirely unrelated to the issue and not at all appropriate.

Finally, they asked me to do something with the user account system that’s not even available on the operating system I told them I was using (Windows 11), which was very similar to the create a new user fix that I had also already tried.

After that, they marked the issue as solved and told me they would announce publicly if a fix was implemented.

Asked about compensation or refund for the multiple months of gamepass I’d paid for while this issue has been going on while not being able to play the one title I’d purchased it for and basically, I got laughed t by both Forza and Microsoft support.

Turn 10 and Microsoft, you are a joke, your game is a buggy, atrocious mess that doesn’t even function, and you are actively scamming people.

Do better.

It is why i didnt necessarily wanted to make a ticket for this, expecting being linked to the troubleshooting guide or do something possibly unrelated which i and many others have already tried. Wanted to see on the forums if it was a problem for anyone else and if so how many.
It has not always been like this, the game has worked before without the issue but its been a while.

Currently at the point of maybe trying to reinstall windows completely and start the game after fresh install see if it behaves the same. Might try that this weekend, not sure yet.
