Performance - optimizing shaders on every launch and a not connected message (1817908)

KAAA…MEEE…HAAA…MEEE…TLDR!!!
the “retry connection” button never worked for me, i assume its broken
these steps i take for the connection at startup
1.open “task manager”(ctrl+shift+esc)
2.start game
3.pull task manager infront
4. keep task manager focused by windows, click its window to be sure

reason:
the shader optimization uses the processor so much, that many background things fail
unfocusing the game, gives just enough to connect

extra:
dont do heavy tasks during shader optimization
it increases the risk of hanging and crashes

to possibly fix shaders optimizing:

  1. make sure your shader cache SIZE is big enough(nvidia control panel?)
  2. and have enough free space on C drive, for the shader cache to exist
  3. clear shader cache
  4. in case you want more to try, empty the following folders:
    4A. delete all in “AppData\Local\packages\Microsoft.ForzaMotorsport_\LocalCache\Local\CmsCache”
4B. delete only files with long names “AppData\LocalLow”
4C. delete all in: my gpu brand shader folder: “AppData\LocalLow\Intel\ShaderCache”
  5. empty your recycling bin
  6. restart pc (dont do shutdown+turn on, because shutdown doesnt cycle everything)

specs:
intel 11700K 3,6Ghz undervolted
intel ARC A770(le) 16GB
ASUS H570-pro
32GB 3200
game on C: 2nd m.2 slot, pcie 3.0(970 EVO plus)
microsoft store/xbox app version
win 11 pro, minimalistic startup

Edit 2: I followed instructions in Hiruda_Sanguine’s post above and saw a huge improvement in shader optimization.

I deleted the files in the two folders they mention. Some files were in use by programs like Edge, DSX, basically whatever I had running so I didn’t delete them.

Next launch of the game shaders took forever to optimize, something like 20 minutes. I restarted the game and now the percentage starts at like 50% and optimizing the rest takes about a minute and a half where previously I would see 6 minutes or more. I’m not sure this is a straight fix, but it is the only thing that seems to have made any difference. Thanks Hiruda_Sanguine!

Voted to include my problem.

I get the shaders compiling on every start. Ive tried all sorts of troubleshooting to fix it. It doesn’t seem related to free drive space.

Specs:
AMD Ryzen 4500 3.8ghz
Intel Arc A750 8GB
ASUS B550 mainboard
32gb 3200 RAM
Game installed on nvme
Steam version
Win 11 pro

Have tried updating and repairing xbox, game services, store.
Drivers and windows fully updated.

Optimizing shaders takes about 6 minutes every time the game loads.

Edit: I do not have the difficulties in logging in to the xbox network. That has worked properly for me nearly every time. I think I’ve only seen it fail once or twice.

Does anyone have a solution for this when playing through GeForcenow?
On my computer I simply keep my WiFi off until shaders are at 90%, but with GeForcenow I’m stuck in the reconnection loop

I have the same problems and have been trying to launch the game for nearly an hour, but have now given up.
I haven’t played it for months on GamePass, but when I want to, total failure.
My specs are easily good enough as well - Ryzen 5600X/RX 5700 XT 8GB/32GB Ram.

This is how I make it work on my computer

  1. launch the game from the Xbox app
  2. when it starts loading the shaders turn off WiFi/disconnected ethernet cable
  3. it will complain that there is no internet, select play offline
  4. when shaders are at 90% reconnect WiFi/cable
It will say connection was re-established
  5. at this point you should be in the main menu with a settings screen automatically opened, select continue
  6. press A to go to the main menu, it will ask you you want to reload with your profile… do that

At this point, it connects successfully to Xbox live, loads my profile and I’m finally ready to play

I just followed your tip and spent the last hour trying to get the game to start, but with no luck.
It thinks I’m connected when I’m not etc etc. I’m not prepared to waste any more time on this debacle and have uninstalled the game.
The same thing happened with Forza Horizon 5 on Steam which I also uninstalled, but when I reinstalled it, the game finally ran.
I may do the same with FM 8, but frankly, there are better racing games out there that work right out of the box.

Everytime I start the game, its optimizing shaders starting from the low 20’s. When theres an update the game starts from 0 and takes up to 20 minutes to finish optimizing shaders.

I have exactly the same issue. After several restarts at some point the game starts. On the way it crashes sometimes or just stay at the end in the reconnect window.

Maybe the sequence of the starting process shall be changed so that first the shaders are optimized and then the connection to Xbox live is built up?

happends to me too
if first connection fails, it seems unrecovarable?
this is how i work around it:

  1. start task manager (ctrl+shift+esc)
  2. start the game(splash-screen)
  3. click anywhere on task manager(or alt-tab to it)
  4. when the game goes from splash to fullscreen, repeat step 3

an ethernet cable should give the best chance (avoid having both wifi and ethernet)
i think the game gets choked because of the optimization process
i think unfocusing the game helps loosen the priority of the optimization(else it would render the PC unusable)

In the Update 11 patch notes i spotted this:

  • Improvements to the shader precompile process on PC have been made when starting up the game on NVIDIA GPUs.

Lets see what happens. I will report back at some point.

Update 11 doesn’t fix shader recompiling. My friends report they also have them getting “optimized” every launch of the game. They’ve made it very quick now, but the issue is still there and they have closed my post and stated it as “fixed” while it’s obviously not.

Yes shader compiling is still there and i didnt expect it to be gone. However the problem for most people was that the shader process also interfered with the login process somehow. This topic kind of got two problems packed into one and it seems – for now…one seems to been fixed (connection issues due to shader compiling or startup process).

Yesterday i started the game and it seems like it now triggers the login process instantly, i was logged in and connected before the shader process was at 20%. It did not trigger the no connection popup and login was successful.

This is like the 2nd to 3rd time in 4 months i got passed the startup process in a normal way. I will report back later to confirm it wasn’t a one off.

Same here, always had this issue, but since the last update (August 12), I can’t launch my game. It gets stuck on the ‘Warning Data Screen’ or the ‘Xbox Turn 10 starting menu.’ Yesterday, the first launch after the update worked perfectly without any issues, but today it crashes every time.

My setup:

Asus Rog B450 Strix II
Ryzen 5 3600
DDR4 3200 MHz 32GB RAM
RTX 2060 Super (8GB VRAM)
NVMe M.2 500GB
Windows 11
300 Mbps internet connection."

For me it seems that change fixed the issue. Since the update I haven’t got any more issue and before the update I had issues each time I started the game.

Thanks Forza Devs! Great job!

@here
Does this issue still persist after recent updates? Would it be possible to provide a recent video of this in action?

How long do the shaders take to load?
Does this happen on every launch or just sometimes?
What are your PC specs?

The optimizing of shaders still occurs on every launch.
The time it takes is now significantly reduced, taking about 20 seconds for a normal launch. When launching the game after having updated the game and/or the graphics drivers, the optimizing will take 2-3 minutes.

This issue is completely fixed on my computer. I can’t remember the last time I saw the optimizing shaders message pop. The logging in popups show, and there is a very brief delay before the main menu shows up.

Exactly same for me, no more shader optimizing and logging also good so similar behavior for now.

I still see that message on start-up, but after Update 11 it starts at 80-90% and is done before “checking for updates” concludes so it’s no longer an issue for me

I have GeForce RTX 4090, I play on Steam.

Yes I have a Nvidia GPU and so do others I race with and we all have this problem.
It is not fixed and still happens in update 12.
Using latest Nvidia drivers.
