I always use sim steering since Forza 4. With the Xbox One controller’s impulse triggers, you usually have plenty of warning before the car wipes out. Can’t speak for a force feedback wheel, cause I never had one that worked for Forza.
Bouncing? Check your settings in-game. And also see: http://forums.forza.net/turn10_postst41479_Steering-Wheels-and-You---A-Hopefully-Helpful-Guide.aspx
Yes I don’t feel hood view to be equal to third person. I’ve always used hood view+sim+no assists and sim steering always. Anyway my point was you really notice it driving a stock car, or a car with a lot of suspension travel, like I mentioned gt40/330 in stock form. In third person I have no problem driving quickly, but when I used hood view I seem to have trouble keeping the car settled on turns, most noticeable being high speed. I notice it must less with a tuned car but still I do notice it.
Basically I’m just trying to find an OG forza head who uses sim steering who can test this out for me.
Personally ran sim steering on a pad since FM4 and found myself to be much faster with it. I tried normal steering on FM5 a couple of weeks back to see if there was much difference and I couldn’t get used to the comparative understeer.
Pretty much all a matter of personal preference.
I’ve recently chopped my left thumb off and have to steer with my index finger, will deffo be using normal for the time being while I retrain my hand.
Dam, hopefully you got that thumb sewed back on.
I am usually always on the TX wheel, but decided to jump into some races after doing some tuning today with the controller. Sim steering with the controller definitely can be twitchy, and because you can go full lock so quickly, its very easy to lose it with fast motions.
Funny thing, I was braking into a slow corner today, and the rumble function of the controller caused it to essentially turn itself off. Very weird, but its a Day One controller and has definitely seen better days.
I have all assists disabled (controller) however I use Normal Steering as it’s “safer” for Multiplayer.
I found in Forza Motorsport 4 that with Simulation Steering enabled correcting from the minor taps and collisions that happen naturally online would result in sudden tankslappers and cause more incidents than it prevents.
There are some achievements that require driving with “no assists”. Someone knows if that includes using sim steering?
Cheers

Guys I have gotten use to hood view, I think I was just having a hard time for some reason. Anyways I didn’t want to continue to perpetuate the idea so Im saying at this point I don’t think there is any real difference between the views with sim.
little bit of advice for anyone having trouble with correcting sim steering when you screw up, point the joystick forward instead of left or right to correct with op lock, ideally forward and just a couple degrees to L or R depending which way you need to correct.
Been using ‘normal’ since Fanatec recommended that for their wheel in FM4, as the one being more ‘realistic’. They claimed ‘simulation’ should more apropriately been called ‘drift’.
I’ve use sim on controller too. Only the f1 lotus e23 is really hard to control. All other cars are driveable for me with sim/controller. Only when I race multiplayer I sometimes use normal. But I think normal steering gives me not the feel for the car that I want.
Normal Steering for Controller/Gamepad
Sim Steering for Wheels
its as simple as that
Yeah, exactly this. Normal it is.
Is there anywhere that shows turn10 saying that normal is for controllers and stimulation for steering wheels? Is it even considered a stimulation racing game if we use normal?I tried it for the first time yesterday while drifting, it made everything a million times easier
I’m not sure where it says that, but in the Horizon games, there is a message in the controller settings that ‘sim’ is recommended for wheels while normal is for controllers. Then again, Horizon is a more laid back racing game emphasizing on fun, not necessarily 100% accurate physics.
FM on the other hand is a different beast to tame and one that requires a gradual learning curve.
I’d highly recommend SIM steering all the way whether you’re on a wheel or controller. It forces you to be a cleaner, sharper precision driver by honing your reflexes and allowing you to better feel the road and suspension. This is how driving is IRL: you make intricate corrections to keep the trajectory where it needs to be in order to carry momentum into turns and exit with speed and finesse.
Words can’t really explain it - just keep SIM on and put in hours of patience and practice. You’ll get immense satisfaction out of it. I feel the physics/steering feels somewhat dumbed down and basic with normal steering. With normal steering, FM is almost like Horizon. Almost.
Anyway, this isn’t a comparison thread. Learning the game with SIM can help you make it out of a sticky situation IRL. It is fairly close to how cars react on an actual track, specifically when going from a boaty muscle car to a sharper super/exotic to an ultra-sharp race car or prototype.
I speak from real-world experience, not comparison to other games or sims. Just my two. Keep SIM on. You won’t regret it. It requires intricate corrections and finesse. That’s all. Put in the hours and you will be happy that you did.
PATIENCE!
If I’m using a FWD or AWD car I use sim steering on my gamepad. The cars feel more responsive and lively. It does take some time to get used to it, but once I did I ended up turning faster laps. Occasionally it will try to punish me for my choice. Simulation steering on a gamepad with a RWD proved to be to much. Over correcting a slide would just end badly 99.9999% of the time.
Sim steering is easy. Feel free to use it if you enjoy the slightest tap sending you in an uncontrollable spin.
I prefer normal and just set my car up to have good turn in with a fairly loose rear end and use 0-100 on all controller deadzones. Problem solved.
I find that for standard racing, normal steering is the way to go. I’ve heard people claim Sim steering is more for wheel users but from what I’ve found it’s more for wheel users combined with drifting. Yes Sim steering is twitchy and unforgiving but it works REALLY good on cars with a proper drift tune.
Controller user since Gran Turismo days. Sim steering since FM4.
Bought steering wheel about a month ago, found it very hard to catch a slide with the wheel until I changed to normal steering.
Now it feels right.
I’ve always run with assists off.
So for me: Sim on controller. Normal on wheel.
I would recommend Normal for the wheel if you find slides impossible to catch with sim steering. I struggled needlessly with Sim steering until the instant I switched to normal.
Logitech G920, can’t speak for other steering wheels.
