I still remember the “If you can see it, you can drive to it.” mantra that was used last time.
Sure, they are specifically saying I can drive through all these different terrains now, but to me, that still leaves a grey area in the interpretation. The grey area is that every thing they list can be presented just like the golf course was, and still be true within the confines of the statement.
They may strategically place many of these areas has shortcuts, and sprinkle them around the map, and some of them may even be quite large, but has long has they’re claiming the map is larger, while also claiming to only triple the drivable area, the math just doesn’t add up. Even if it was the same size map seen in H1, totally opening it up would go quite a bit farther than just tripling the driving area.
It’s a funny double-edged sword really. At the same time as being happy to be able to drive off-road at will, ‘Three times the roads’ would have excited me much more than ‘Three times the drivable area’. =P
Either way, I’m sure we’ll have a nice big beautiful map with plenty to see and do. At least they can’t do a Rockstar and claim the underwater area is part of the increased map size…
The way the speculating and wild theorizing goes around here just cracks me up sometimes.
From the IGN article / interview (the second part being forgotten in this thread, for some reason):
“So that means that not only is the world of Forza Horizon 2 bigger than the one in Horizon, it also has three times more driveable area; a three-times bigger play space.”
So, now we can all debate the “hidden meaning” behind the additional phrase “… play space,” and WHY they used both descriptive phrases instead of one, or WHY they didn’t actually come out and say “the ## miles of roadway in FH1 has been increased to exactly ### miles in FH2,” or WHY they didn’t say “since the barriers are down, FH2 will have exactly ##### square meters of surface area on which to drive,” or, or, or…
And, oh yeah… since it’s going to have weather, I wonder if the “three-times more driveable area” phrasing really means “the same area as FH1, but multiplied by 3 because you now have dry, wet and snow”!!!
Snow confirmed by a moderator!!! It must be true!!!11!!1!1!1!!11!1!1??!1!1
Rampant speculation is one of those things that we inevitably deal with at every new game release. I guess we should expect something different from our forum body after watching them do it to themselves for the last 4 or 5 titles, eh?.. LOL
So now we know snow is in(confirmed by both of you) I guess we need to know stuff like can we drive snowmobiles? can we buy snow tires? will there be snowmen?
Will Drivatars have snowball fights? And how do we influence their actions, in terms to velocity and snowball thickness? Must know now to adequately prepare.
I for one haven’t forgotten any part of that statement, nor do I think there is any hidden meaning to it. I choose to take it quite literally in fact.
Speculation is what happens when there are a lack of solid facts. Some, of course, also speculate because they choose to ignore certain facts. Others speculate when they choose to see facts that are not there. In that sense, speculation can be dangerous, sure. Because of that danger, I personally take the position that no amount of speculation will ever allow me to know the unknowable, and therefore I personally avoid setting concrete expectations based only off of what is otherwise unsupported speculation.
So why am I not accepting the full body of available information from the various quotes has meaning “fully open world”, like some have?
Simple. Interpreted literally, there is a discrepancy. The quotes do start to make sense if I allow for an underlying meaning, but even then they don’t support the totally open world theory from my perspective. Either way, I don’t arrive at a total open world has a conclusion, thus there is doubt.
When previous history relative to advertising is added to the mix, there is even more reason for doubt. Therefore, it is best to keep my personal expectations low until provided with more facts to the contrary, and also not make the mistake of assuming those expectations has fact either.
In this case, keeping expectation low means not expecting any great leaps beyond what we’ve gotten in the past. In the past we were sold a rather small, closed world, heavily advertised up until close to release has a much more open world than it was. We know the H2 world is larger, and utilizes more area, but we don’t have proof of 100% area utilization yet, so I’m not expecting 100% utilization, regardless of implication.
When facts overrule my lowered expectations, assuming those expectations are wrong, then I can happily know that I was wrong, and that the game is even better than I thought.
Should my expectations be justified, there will be no disappointment, has things turned out pretty much has I thought. Currently I am looking forward to what I have seen.
The only negative will be if the game doesn’t even make my minimal expectations. Unlikely, has I keep mine pretty low, but should it be the case, you will find much more anger from many others before you’ll hear much out of me. If anything, I will simply make an occasional tempered comment in the less heated threads, and lower my expectations even further next time.
So then, why am I speculating in this thread, knowing that speculation alone is neither likely to result in any useful information, nor provide any factual justification for my expectations?
Easily answered. I’m bored. The thread was already here. It passes the time while we await more facts, and while I await a delivery of paper work for my current employee theft investigation.
Ironically, once that paperwork arrives, speculation will play a large part in homing in on possible thief, or thieves, and will help build the basis of a case. I’m already speculating from past experience, even has I write this. True, the case itself will have to be prosecuted entirely on fact, but the speculation will save me quite a bit of time narrowing down where to start looking for those facts. Speculation isn’t always a bad thing, nor is it always a waste of time. Speculation can be very useful when respected for what it is.
OK, all speculation aside, my expectations are as follows:
Bigger map. I’m not saying it will be 3X bigger, 2X bigger, but I expect a measurable size increase.
More Off-Roading areas. I am not expecting 100% unlimited access to every centimeter of the map (used metric 'cuz it’s in Europe ) since I don’t want to find my car stuck in a canyon.
Awesomeness, and a place to park my beloved Mustang.
This would be roughly the area that was described by IGN: “From the foothills of the Alps, right down the Mediterranean Sea. From the rolling hills of Tuscany in Italy, across the border into France and beautiful Provence and the glamorous Côte d’Azur”
It is a few miles north of Milan, so there could be a chance. But at this point it would be just a guess if a track is in the game. It would definetly be a nice addition
As far as I can tell the names in Horizon are shared by their real life counterparts; Nice and Castelletto are certainly real places along the meditteranean, albeit waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay further apart in real life than they appear in the game lol
Ahh I guess I am just longing for another Test Drive Unlimited style map with airports and the racetrack through the industrial factory areas. If T10 could get Monaco in and Monza and the awesome roads in-between I (along with most people on here) would be in heaven.
As for what I think we will see; in reality it’ll be a recreation of the Med coast based on real locations but not the real locations themselves or anywhere near the span we are hoping for. It is possible to recreate an area though, Midnight Club LA, so I remain hopeful until the end.
