Lifetime Forza player, finally plays Gran Turismo

So because one of my two Series X died 13 days out of warranty I was able to trade it in along with some other stuff and get a PlayStation 5 for no money out of pocket. The new Gran Turismo 7 is quite maligned right now: it’s pretty new and not mature, has a bunch of microtransaction garbage, etc. So from recommendations on Reddit I got the previous generation Gran Turismo Sport instead, which is great because it was on sale for a $10. After playing with it using the controller that comes with the PS5, instead of my full motion rig that I play the Forza games on, here are my thoughts…

  1. Can’t really comment on handling or physics and car control or things like that since I’m using completely different controllers. I will say I’m liking the game enough that I’m considering changing out my direct drive wheelbase to get one that is PlayStation compatible as the one I have now only works on Xbox and PC.

  2. It has pit stops which are awesome. They’re super easy to do about the same as the Forza ones you just pull into the pits and it auto adjust your speed. Great thing is you get to select from three different tire compounds and then while the gas is filling up you get to click when to stop based on how much you have left to drive.

  3. It has an MFD which is a multifunction display. Using the left and right on the d-pad you can switch between six or seven options, And then using up and down on the d-pad you can change the value. These include, but may not be all of them I remember… Traction control settings 1-5, yep actually can adjust traction control like a real race car. If we don’t get this in the next Forza my head will probably explode. We should have had it years ago. Fuel rate 1-5 from lean to full for power, to try to squeeze out an extra lap. Brake bias, not sure the range but I’m sure it’s enough flexibility as the other settings are. Torque distribution in an all-wheel drive vehicle, how cool is this, live while racing you can adjust front to rear torque. Then You can also cycle through: course map, radar, session timer. All of these settings are live in game and easy to adjust when you’re on a straight away. It makes the game so much more immersive and awesome to play.

  4. Adjustable ABS but oddly only before the race starts and limited to default or weak or off, so three settings.

Then there are a slew of differences between the games…

  1. We have Forza Vista and they have something called Scape Scenes, which lets you put any car in different real scenes (lots of them) and take pictures. It’s pretty cool, although photos are not my thing, I’m more like to lay down rubber.

  2. Multiple currencies, including: cash, miles driven, and XP.

  3. They have a much more limited upgrade system, basically just weight and power. With this there is some homologation. Apparently all of the cars come with completely adjustable suspension, etc. and all of those other parts already installed. So you don’t have to buy any of those, every single car is completely adjustable and UI formatting that they do that on is to me a little bit easier to look at and work with. Apparently the new GT7 has all the pieces parts for upgrade ability just like Forza 7.

  4. The campaign is fairly limited and originally on Gran Turismo Sport did not even come with it as it was mostly an online multiplayer game which was their direction when developing it. They have since added some campaign races and things to do but it’s not as extensive as Forza games. Apparently the new GT7 has a little more fleshed out campaign, but not to the extent that Forza 7 had which I thought was terrific.

  5. They have a significant amount of what are called Vision GT cars, which are basically artists conception prototype cars based off of real cars. I will say this: they look amazing, sound amazing and are blast to drive. They are all over the top in both engineering and visual design. I know a lot of people only like real cars that are out in the world. But I think it’s pretty cool that they do this and have had the most enjoyment driving around in cars I’ve never had a chance to previously.

  6. They do have microtransactions where for between a dollar and $3 you can buy cars directly. However not one single car is locked behind this you can earn in-game credits and get every single car. There are less cars than Forza 7. I think in its final release Gran Turismo Sport had something in the mid 300 range. I haven’t found it lacking at all, in fact there are quite a few cars that are unique to this game which have been enjoyable besides the Vision GT models.

I’m sure there is a bunch more, but for any of you that have made it this far, congratulations in reading this miniature novel. I think the thing to take away from this is there is a lot that can be done and added to the next Forza Motorsport. Although at this point I’m sure it’s getting close to final development and they’re just fine tuning. I will definitely flip my lid if they don’t add adjustable traction control and having it on the fly is absolutely necessary. Also selecting tire choice and fuel during pitting makes a significant difference in racing strategy and immersion.

I think you’re reading too much into it bro. Just because they’re not targeting a Christmas release doesn’t mean that Turn 10 is in development hell.
Turn 10 has proven themselves to be very capable developers, despite having done some questionable choices over the years. I don’t think Forza 8 is in a bad spot.

I mean June release was not really bad even though I expect the release would be on May next year

I take the suggestions to be more long term for both series rather than what to expect in fm8 and fh5.

I do think that it’s far too late in the day for suggestions to make it into fm8 given the proposed release window but if it were to be delayed, who knows (please don’t delay!)

On topic, always a Forza player over gt. Tho did go thru a phase with friends and bought a ps3 just for gt5 along with a logi wheel.

Yes, GT has since features I quite like but nothing to make me jump ship totally

It could just mean that they have modularized the game to the extent that it’s not that hard to move things in and out or just move parts around.

Me too, or upcoming releases as DLC and such. Not only for primary release for game.

Being just 2 month on FM7 I imagine there were improvements and new stuff in the 4 years since that launched too. EOL a year ago.

I’m fine with the release date. FM1 came out around spring because they took their time for 3 years. They later stared releasing Forza around the console launch dates.

The Reddit sub’s opinion on GT7 is not representative of the game’s quality. They’re heavily biased against the game, because it doesn’t have a very extensive campaign compared to previous Gran Turismos.

The current state of Gran Turismo is GT7. And the game is much improved from where it was in 1.07, which was when PD lowered rewards just after announcing MTX.

A few things to consider:

  • The upgrade system of GT7 is basically the same as it’s always been in GT. You can’t bore your engine and expect to be able to magically return it to the previous state by “removing” the displacement upgrade like you do in Forza;

  • GT7 has a better tuning system. Aside from things you can do in Forza, you can also adjust ballast F/R, change fuel map, manually tweak restrictors, and remedy turbo lag with an anti-lag system, among other things;

  • GT7 has custom exhausts which change the car’s sound. Weight reduction changes the sound in the interior camera as well;

  • The engine swap feature of GT7 is reliant upon a roulette ticket RNG system which is inferior to Forza’s “let’s just buy it”;

  • Currently, GT7 has 4 meta races which solve all your credits’ needs, as well as 14-day time trials in Sport Mode which give 2 million to lap times within 3% of the leader. No cheating either (I suspect FM’s boards will die very quickly if online is handled like FH5);

  • Cars older than ‘01 are only avaliable in Used Cars and Legend Cars. Legend dealer indexes prices according to real life Hagerty’s evaluation system. This has been the source of controversy as, due to speculation, “save the manuals”, “muh natural aspiration”, “muh purity”, old cars’ prices have been on the rise, which makes the in-game grind steeper;

  • Physics-wise, there’s no comparison. GT7 is so much better than FM7 that, when I came back to FM7 weeks ago, I couldn’t stomach it;

  • Weather is not available on all tracks in GT7. This being said, when it is, it’s the best weather system ever implemented in any sim;

  • GT7 is available on the PS4, which means you don’t need to go next gen (yet). Sony is beginning to move on from the PS4, though, so it’s possible a “Spec 2” release of GT7, which would come to both Steam and PS5, would not be available on the PS4 (although this is pure speculation on my part);

  • When it comes to customization, the standard wings in GT7 are far more tasteful than anything Forza offers. There’s the odd car that’s worse than in Forza, but the vast majority have better options in GT7. You can build a Sierra Cosworth with both the iconic wing and rear downforce, for example;

  • The Xbox Series controller feels like a cheap toy next to the DualSense.

Given the way Forza is being handled right now (and make no mistake, Microsoft will try to push FH’s annoyances to FM users once again, the question is how), I can’t see myself going back to FM. It’s been a good time but, to me, the feel of Gran Turismo is just better. And I say this as someone who used to defend Forza a little too strongly, lol.

Dualsense is made for kids, it’s the worst controller ever. I hate the triggers, they have a huge deadzone. I would enjoy GT7 way more with an xbox controller

Kazunori Yamauchi stated in a December interview they were working on a PC port of GT7. He then quickly retracted his statement saying, there are no plans for GT7 on PC in the foreseeable future.

I would love it if GT7 came to PC, but this is one series that probably never will even though other Sony first party games are making their way to PC, eventually.

It’s easy to accept somebody elses view when they make an effort to explain why, as you did. So have fun on GT7.

  • welcome back on next FM, I think it will be really good
  • I did not play FH, so will not be aware what MS pushed on me

I am actually hoping for some public road tracks with beautyful sceneries. I envie FH players in this regard.

I’m betting the powers that be at Sony just about lost it when that interview came out. They are still trying to sell PS5s, so the thought of a current gen exclusive game jumping ship to PC would be bad for sales of the new console.

It took a while for GOW and Spider-Man to port over. I would never say never, but I wouldn’t bet anytime soon.

  • Softer buttons compared to Xbox
  • Fits better in my hand, which is not small
  • Adaptive triggers make Xbox controller look like a joke
  • Touchpad actually useful in some games (Ghost of Tsushima for example)
  • LED that changes color depending on context (if the game supports it, and plenty do)
  • Audio speaker enriches ambient sound (best heard in Cyberpunk 2077)
  • Motion aiming/controls

Series X controller is not bad at all, but the DualSense was a huge leap compared to what we had last gen. Considering the topic is about GT, it also happens that GT7 has one of the best DualSense implementations.

The reason I dropped idea of PS4 was the controller charge duration.

  • 6-9 hours is number I picked up

That means in some cases shortening a session you are really cought up in to charge controller, which could not be played while charging on cable, but later added that eventually.

  • PS fanbois just said get another controller
  • that’s the solution they got

I never changed batteries on 360 or Xbox One more often than every three weeks or something. PS3 was fine too.

And then some old history with PS3 I had 12 years ago, in eager to shove in some Vita handconsole software they threw out a lot of code in firmware. Backup session after taking 1.5 hours or so suddenly took 16-20 hours.

So Sony Playstation, naaaahhhhh…

Not too big of a fan of the PS5 controller myself, but saying that it’s made for kids is simply wrong. I mean, the thing is flippin massive. I could agree with that statement if we were talking about the PS1-PS3 controller though.

The Xbox Series controller is literally made to fit the hands of 8-year-olds, according to Microsoft. Literally made for kids. It’s also cheap and nasty quality and the triggers are too short compared to the superior Xbox One pad. (Might not be too short if you have kid’s hands.)

I’m vaguely offended by that.

Seriously, the XBox controller just feels more ergonomic to me. Button placement, size of the triggers, construction - it just feels like a better all-around controller. But the DualSense isn’t exactly cheap-feeling, and I am loving that Sony thought to put force-feedback in the triggers, and Gran Turismo thought to take advantage of that.

Sorry if you are offended, I don’t know why you would be though.

Lots of people have had problems adapting to the Series controller, who have had pain or cramp for the first time in their lives using a controller, me included. It’s too small, the grips feel horrible and the triggers are too short and not curved enough at the end like the old ones. It’s particularly noticeable in games (not Forza) which require you to pull the trigger all the way in and hold it for longish periods, like in 3rd person shooters where you use it to aim your weapon.

I haven’t used the PS5 pad yet but the PS4 one feels much higher quality than these Series pads do, and I’ve also used it for many hours without any discomfort, in a range of games. Same goes for the 360 and the One pads.

Design aside, Microsoft has a serious problem of quality control with their controllers, with many reports of buttons / triggers sticking and sticks drifting after short periods of light careful use. Their Elite controllers are no guarantee of avoiding problems either, in fact by all accounts they are even less reliable.

The DualSense vs DS4 is a mixed bag. DualSense feels cheaper because of lack of rubbered coating, but the buttons in the DualSense feel higher quality.

Series vs One, both use lots of hard plastic but the Series controller fells a little worse when it comes to quality and is barely improved. Wish Microsoft had been a little more daring with it.

Its literally .09 inches shorter in height and 8 grams heavier, not calling you a liar but its pretty much the same size.
