Let's talk about audio

I have used Dolby atmos settings on Xbox console and from the app the warm detailed & default options all sound the same and I use a headset

You need to tweak the EQ - don’t use the default settings.

I get that, they can’t keep everyone happy but it seems they didn’t even try to replicate the cockpit sounds properly. Do you even remember how mind blowing the car sounds were on the Xbox One launch game? FM5…

Yeah, there are many aspects of the game where it seems like they didn’t even try.

I think I found one of the culprits causing this. Screen narrator in accessibility. Try toggling it next time you play. I thought that just leaving it on with volume at 0 would do the trick, but found out tonight that I had to toggle it again. Really really annoying bug to have.

Okay, this doesn’t make any sense to me at all. You’re saying that the road cars in cockpit view sound small and lack dynamic range because screen narrator is off? I have to turn that on with volume set to 0 to get the same dynamic range in cockpit as I do in replays and chase cam?

If this is truly the issue then how come some road cars sound fine in cockpit and others sound like they are coming out of a paper bag?

Edit: I don’t have any narrator features turned on so not sure what “bug” you have identified. I can go from one car in cockpit which sounds okay to another one which can actually sound great to yet another one that sounds completely flat and hollow. So what’s screen narrator got to do with it? Mine’s already off, I don’t need or use accessibility features.

Tested out your theory with all possible variables.

Nope, it’s got nothing to do with screen narrator which is off already by default for most people. If you turn it on it will simply auto adjust the game’s volume when it needs to speak.

This has nothing at all to do with the lack of punch, lack of “thick” midrange sound, and dynsmic frequency range in cockpit. It is also NOT a 100% across the board issue across the game but one thay varies from car to car

Example: listen to the AR Quadrifolio, old school NSX or any of the older Corvettes. They sound fine. Now hop into any Ferrari, modern Porsche 911, modern Mustang GT or old school BMW M3 or e.g. Ferrari 458 (both)… no punch, no dynamic range, muted, hollow and “faraway” sound in cockpit. It’s as if your sound just went from surround in chase cam to mono or radio speakers in cockpit - because they haven’t recorded or mastered the cockpit sound of those cars in digital surround channels!

There are individual threads on the cars with many of them having well over a dozen votes and some even bug logged but we have yet to receive fixes.

I’m afraid the issue is on your end with your rig only. You’ve left feedback on a few other threads as well saying that you fiddled with this or that, and that it boosted the dynamic range.

I will not argue about this anymore. The game has glaring audio issues which is absolutely killing the immersion and fun factor.

The way they implemented this feature messes up surround sound. FH5 has a similar issue. Dolby Atmos in my case, but I have tested other surround modes. I can 100% hear the bass and dynamic range increase when I use this workaround. It isn’t a magic bullet tho. Doesn’t completely transform the sound ( this is why I said ONE of the culprits ). The sounds themselves are still very sub-par. It isn’t something that you can do once either. Seems to get reset after changing cars a few times. Might do it every time you change cars. Idk haven’t gone that far into it yet.

Idk if you have a PS5. I have both. The PS5 is always about 5dB quieter than Xbox for no good reason ( tested using the exact same games on both consoles ). Even with passthrough on. This tells me that Xbox is doing some really unnecessary stuff to the audio mixes. My finger is on the accessibility narrator features as one of the culprits. I have found in the past that the system level one affected bass and dynamic range levels. They’ve since fixed it. There’s definitely other marketing loudness tools in play that just do not need to be there.

The workaround is this. Choose your car > Start the race or test drive > pause > go to accessibility > Turn the feature on or off ( opposite of whatever it is currently ) > save > go back to the game and hear more bass, dynamic range, and depth.

Nope tried this too. Zero effect. No issues with FH 5 sound through but again some road car interiors sounding like hollow race car cockpits is a car to car issue and not a widespread one.

This is a “you only” issue. ALL my games are consistent with sound. Forza is the only game which makes me want to either rage quit or just switch to another game instantly because the audio is at odds with the generally good physics and visuals.

I hop into Ride 5, DR2, AC, or Flight Simulator and the sounds are so delightfully impactful. Gives me the feeling that I’m IN the car, ON the bike or actually in a fighter jet cockpit, know what I mean?

FM is lagging behind games in sound which were released nearly a decade or more back.

thankyou for the advice : )

Are you hearing the game through a surround amp or headset? Make sure 7.1 virtualization is enabled under the EQ to help you hear and feel the frequencies better through the mids, lows, and highs.

Don’t enable any surround enhancements on the amp or headset.

Enjoy!

The good car sounds in the game sound quite good with Atmos. Not overly good. But still vastly better than the poor sounds.

Using headset i always use it since i started i never want 2 turn back :'D yeah to many cars sounds like a blender with a poorly tuned guitar

Blender with a poorly tuned guitar, lol… We share the same grievances and speak the same language in terms of exhaust notes

Have you driven the 2023 Artura yet? They’ve given it a really good sound. I’m impressed.

Happy to see this thread still going. Please continue to leave general feedback here too folks. And for car specific audio shortcomings you know how to report and vote. :+1:

Shouldn’t even be called sound design in this scenario. Design implies creativity and there should be none when translating what already exists to this video game format. This should be seen as more of a preservation effort. If done right, it would only need to be done once.

not yet i just hope the cars turns

Yes, it turns fine. Balance is great, I like it so far.
