Lens flare fetish...

OK, I get it. Turn 10 is super proud of the job they did on the lighting, especially the lens flare. But does ever damn race have to take place into the setting sun. I’m sick of racing blindly through a turn unable to see anything other than lens flare (like drivers IRL wouldn’t have some sort of eye protection like polarized/anti-g;lare lenses for their helmet). There are plenty of hours in a day to race, plenty of other weather conditions (cloudy, overcast) to race in. Why does every race take place at sunset?

None of the races take place at sunset. Instead, it is more late afternoon or early morning. That said, give it another title or two and I am sure we will have adjustable time environments.

Being able to adjust the time of day would be nice of course, but given that we can`t do it I have to say I think Turn10 did a great job with the lighting and daytime selection.

I really like the lens flare and hdr effects, it looks great and the blinding effects feel realistic.

Also, the low sun strongly adds to the sense of speed.
It casts long shadows across the track, adding reference points which help feeling how fast you go (same goes for the contrast rich textures).
Due to the placement it also does that flickering thing when quickly hidden/revealed by objects. The straight on Road Atlanta being a prime example, wouldn`t feel half as speedy without the sun being exactly where it is.

No the blinding effect is not realistic at all. Racing helmets mitigate the effect specifically to avoid this. It is stupid.

I agree that Turn 10 did a great job with the graphics but did go overboard on the time of day. For a long time people have been asking for adjustable time of day so if it was easy to do I think we would have seen it in 5 titles.

While I am not a fan of sun flare, I think the biggest disappointment comes from the times of day T10 choose for most tracks. These times may be good for show off sun flares and lighting but they detract from the real stars - the cars. Paint colors are washed out or come off looking muddied thanks to the daylight choices made. I hope T10 takes a look at the competition and going forward we at least get racing under bright blue afternoon skies that show off the cars and their paintjobs. Leave the sunsets and landscapes to adventure games.

I find it ridiculous that there is lens flare at all. What am I some kind of robot with camera lens eyes. It really takes the realism out of it since I always drive from the interior view. I am not a robot, my eyes do not produce lens flare.

My thoughts exactly, as for the blinding sun in your face the dude in the driving seat is wearing a crash helmet with a tinted visor so why the blinding effect?

I don’t get the lens flare/shadow fetish. Its unrealistic and looks terrible. Unfortunately, T10 aren’t the only ones guilty of this. It seems to be an indusrty wide phenomenon.

I think the issue here is the small lot of you are interpreting the world of Forza as a photo real environment when, in actuality, Turn 10 has made no claims to such. As a matter of fact, much of their comments surrounding Forza’s graphic design have touched on the artistic approach as opposed to a realism approach.

That said, I guess it is can be considered a positive when a gamer’s gripe about the new generation Forza is focused on something so benign as lens flare.

Blinding sunlight was an issue in fm4 as well. So its more a matter of esthetics than anything else.

I dont particularly like that effect myself & i’m not interpreting the world of Forza as anything, its just a feature that isn’t really needed. And its not that benign when it causes a pile up on Spa, Laguna, etc when you cant see the car a few feet in front of you because there’s big multi coloured hexagons in your face, something i’ve never experienced while driving anywhere at anytime.
It’s not a “small lot” either, it was an issue when the game 1st launched with a large number of people on here alone, just the games several other issues since have pushed this one to the back of the pile & its been largely ignored or forgotten about as just another thing we have to deal with.
Would’ve been nice to actually see Turn 7(?) on Spa for once & the trouble they went to graphicswise to create it while i was on the game but all i see is light, hexagons & something resembling a track somewhere underneath it all. Doesn’t add anything but visually Spa loses a corner & a small straight because of it, it could be a blank background there & you’d barely notice.

The lengths people will go to defend nonsense…^^^

No further than the lengths you will go to actually compare every aspect of a videogame to real life. I can play your silly game.

Case in point…JJ Abrams.

The glare is realistic, anyone who’s ever driven a car could tell you that.

Yah … when the sun’s in my eyes while driving my car, I just pretend I’m observing a solar eclipse and never flip down the visor or put on a pair of cheap polarized sunglasses.

What percentage of players would really say they love turning a corner and not seeing the rest of the track through the next corner to pay homage to J.J. Abrams? I call shenanigans on anyone who says Yes.

yes, but in no way would a race driver ever racing without the proper visor for the light conditions. My issue with it beside not being able to wear sunglasses is that it is not fair across all views. if you run the fair chase view it doesnt really effect you. I don’t, I like the cockpit view and it makes it difficult to judge the corners and other drivers.

The flare isn’t realistic though and the glare ceases to be realistic when you get it in the same place every single time you race.
