That’d be comically evil XD
In all seriousness though, RTGI is great for bringing out color from different surfaces into the overall lighting, but it only works if there’s color to begin with. I hope whenever they add RTGI, they take the opportunity to improve the tonemapping too

It’s sad to witness this but I appreciate you putting in the effort to expose the disappointing state of the end product. Maybe it will help T10 to wake up. I never was a graphics guy but FM just looks wrong with that fake soulless plastic feel. Maybe they tried to give it more personality and make it more memorable like Race Driver: GRID or NFS Most Wanted with that yellowish low-contrast look, idk, but it didn’t turn out well. Not to mention the overall low quality of models even if compared to previous FM games

If the game has a lot of perfomance issues with the current downgraded graphics… imagine if it was released with these graphics, nobody except high-end PCs could run it haha, not even the Xbox Series X
Yes I have a good TV with quality HDR support(HDR is usually pretty poor especially on cheap TV’s that advertise it.)
I must say (again) I’ve tried to replicate some of your comparisons and despite spending hours I can’t even begin to understand how you matched the angles and locations so well.

Reshade has an overlay shader. You can put in an image and set it’s opacity to 50%. Set up a toggle to disable all shaders and swap between the two until you get everything aligned. Helps to understand how zooming can effect perspective and everything.
Theres also a noclip mod for the camera that helps
A big problem with the games visuals is the tonemapping. This is likely less of an issue with HDR, and would explain why my SDR screenshots are more washed out than a proper HDR experience
Oh nice! On Series X I’m stuck with the default behaviour which explains why I couldn’t get close but kudos for making the effort to do all that to match.

Why does the asphalt look icy in the rain and where did all the puddles go? I remember the fm6 presentation, how they made the right puddles and all that.

My guess, the shaders and textures for the wet asphalt were designed with ray tracing in mind. RT reflections allow for per pixel precision on how rough and shiny the surface is and realistically vary in brightness accordingly.
Later in development, the road reflections got replaced with the old forzatech SSR. This isn’t even comparable with frostbite or unreal engine ssr which has proper roughness support and almost acts like screenspace raytraced reflections. Instead, forzatech SSR seems to apply a flat blur filter after it’s calculated a sharp reflection.
The blur varies based on the roughness of the texture, but obviously this lacks precision and doesn’t present physically accurate results, leaving an almost uniform level of gloss across the entire surface that simply gets a bit more or less blurry depending on the texture.
This is admittedly all an educated guess. There’s undoubtedly a ton of other factors too

I know Forza gets alot of stick for looking poor at times, particularly during overcast / noon settings. I’ve never played GT but what is going on in this video? It looks really poor here?
LJITimate have you taken any pics you think highlight the best of Forza? I took the follow during sunset. These are real time in the sense they were taken whilst the camera was still active, but with effects applied.
My point is if you can adjust the saturation, contrast, etc in real time why can’t it be applied during the race?

I’ve done that round yesterday. It’s the weather setup ( cloudy and chilly) it just applies the look that it’s colder I guess ? idk tbh… different weather setups give different vibes. you can look up dragon trail gardens maybe there is a gameplay with sunny-pleasant or humid. Looks completley different. Oh and Super GT plays multi in 120 fps mode so overall you’ll see some graphical fidelity hit.
Yeah. I mean clearly GT is a good looking game but in this instance it looked really flat and the trees in particular could be cutouts. It does show that any game can be made to look poor.
I agree but it’s like once in a while it’ll look not great…where forza for my eyes look bad in most cases that aren’t night or particular sunny settings on some tracks. That’s obviously my take, everyone has a different eye for graphics. I’m just going through Alan Wake on series X and that game looks spectacular.
I’m quite confident they’ll try to fix some graphical bugs like certian blurriness or overexposure from cockpit view, maybe some color palette change as well. The one thing I doubt they’ll improve, at least not this year are car models. And I know some people say they are good enough for them but…it’s not what I expect from 1st party studio in xbox legacy racing game.
I’m not even talking GT7 here, just look at Motorfest car models… game from Ubisoft -_-‘’ They’ll have to do something about that at some point.

Even outside of the obvious track detail downgrades, all the trackside objects and grass downgrades. There is clearly something not functioning correctly with car shaders. Something has to be broken with them. Maybe some kind of toggle that someone forgot to turn on. Something. Every car looks way worse in every environment compared to Motorsport 5, much less Horizon 5. Even with the deceptive promotionals they should be looking way better in this engine then they do.

120fps mode and a slightly foggy overcast weather with a reliance on indirect lighting, something games absolutely suck at.
Honestly, I watched this when it came out and I thought it looked pretty decent all things considered. Forza would also have a tough time in conditions like these.
As for the trees and stuff looking flat, that’s down to YouTube compression most likely. GT7 has a lot of detail at the micro scale, but not much variation at the macro scale compared to forza. The tradeoff being that forza has more obviously repeating textures and looks lower res up close because textures are spread across larger areas. This is fine when actually playing, but when put through video compression only the macro details survive and GT ends up looking too ‘clean’.

I’m not saying forza can’t look good, but this is nowhere near what they promised.
The back of that McLaren is practically glowing. The diffuse layer is a flat color with no GI response. This only leaves the clearcoat gloss for any interesting shading, but it’s far too bright and doesn’t reflect shadowed areas as dark as it should.
Then there’s the track itself. There’s no difference between any materials. The grass, asphalt, kerbs, dirt, etc, have no interesting variation in their material properties. Everything is pretty much the exact same roughness and it just looks like a flat texture. There’s also very ittle actual 3d grass making that look just as flat as the asphalt.
I may be nitpicking, but they’re all issues that didn’t exist in the prerelease material.

Thank you for making this post! I can’t tell you how annoyed I was that FM’s marketing consistently did not include actual gameplay whenever they showcased this game and got everyone hyped-up about the self-proclaimed technological marvel that FM was supposed to be. I was very disappointed and not at all surprised to see that the final product was not even close to what they showed off. Sure there are some nice things they’ve done but the end product is nowhere near what they showcased at all those events leading up to its release.
I have a Fanatec CSL DD and wow, it’s such a frustrating experience. I actually do better with the controller than on my racing rig, which is not the case with other games like F1’23 and ACC. I am no pro sim racer but I am not that bad either. Haha! It does not work. (side note: support for Fanatec products on Xbox is horrendous. Only the buttons found on the controller work on the steering wheel. None of the other functions like rotary encoders, LEDs function unlike on PS5.)
I’ve uninstalled the game and won’t be coming back to this until the game matches what was shown and promised to us as “built from the ground up”. So maybe for the next generation of Series X whenever that comes out. Until then
