Forza Motorsport Graphics Downgrade research and comparisons

In the following post, I’ve compiled a collection of painstakingly aligned comparison screenshots from the Forza Motorsport marketing material to compare with the final game, in the hopes that I can draw attention to the drastic difference in quality and hopefully get it acknowledged and addressed to the games benefit. This game has a long road ahead, and we know graphical updates like RTGI are part of that plan, so this post is in the hopes that this downgrade may eventually be undone, but I don’t see that happening without a true acknowledgment of how different the visuals truly are.

Please keep this discussion honest, but respectful.

All the following final game screenshots are in SDR at PC max settings with ray tracing enabled

You’ll notice the time of day is often slightly different. The sun position is different in the final game, so it cannot always be a perfect match. I’ve done my best but its imperfect.

This is why I have such a bugbear about “All in-game 4K footage” being watermarked on all of the trailers.

It misleads people into thinking that this kind of quality is possible on retail hardware.

At the very least, it would be nice if the “beyond Ultra” quality settings were available on PC, so that those capable of running the game with high enough specs can use them.

This kinda quality IS possible on retail hardware. Short of the RTGI which they acknowledged early on was not in actual gameplay, all the tech here is very achievable.

Full resolution RT reflections of the entire environment sounds insane, but it’s only mirror reflections so it only needs a single ray per pixel and there was no RTAO on top of it either. (cpu performance due to BVH size may be why it was cut?)

A lot of the changes don’t even seem to be things that’d have any difference on performance either. The color grading is the big one, it’s so much worse in the release game yet I can’t imagine any good reason for it. Then there’s the lens flares around track lights which are still there and we’re never big enough to effect visibility, but (even though the texture looks like it’s blowing out the camera) it’s opacity has been reduced. Why?

Stuff like shader quality and light placement makes sense, but a lot of it doesn’t. Bare minimum, a lot of these options like ray tracing and the lack of TAA should still be available on PC (grass density too, which should be easy to scale)

I agree. It doesn’t look like someting that wouldn’t run on a good PC.

That’s where they got me this time… I always treated “In engine footage” as some purely promotional material. Always thought that “In game” should represent graphics that are actually achievable. Maybe I’m stupid

Came here to share the Reddit link, this is top notch comparison right here. Well done, and an absolute shame no reviewers called Turn10 out on this. Also unacceptable to have Gran Turismo 2 audio quality, but we have nice physics at least🤷

It’s embarrassing to see this!
Even FM4 seems better.
Apart from unfinished cars, like the Aston Martin Valkyrie, where is the brand logo on the hood?
Ferrari FXXK with colors different from the original in the logo.
Audio from the Mercedes AMG C9, like a vacuum cleaner.
Apart from other ridiculous things.

It seems that game would look much better if the colors were not so washed out…

But your screenshots once again put one thing foward, tracks and environments are NOT revolutionary!

There are missing details all around, like in the rest of graphical assets game uses.

Deformable tire barriers and abundance of trees around track are only additions… Comparison with GT7 comes naturally, and it has more realistic surroundings of tracks (tree types and placement), vastly superior skybox, puddles on and beside track, dry line mechanic…

This Motorsport pales in comparison with FM5 graphics, FM5 actually achieved what they promised, stunning and detailed! FM2023 is just washed out and detail-less…

Some people argue that this is not important whatsoever…while I agree that I don’t pay too much attention while I’m in the race I just take some cars for a spin around my favourite tracks and then I pay attention. It feels nice to know That track is represented as it should. Tracks and cars…

Wow, this side by side is actually really painful.

Wow u guys think the better set of graphics is performance RT u are shame. U got 3 options 1. Performance RT (lowers, but for an better gamepla) 2. Performance (mid graphics) and 3. Visual (full graphics of 4k and the effets are better) sorry i think the visual is different because it set on french so pardon me for that. And the shadow and brithness fix it better cause read they say and u will set this perfect.

All these screenshots are PC max settings. This isn’t performance RT mode because this isn’t on console

The looks and performance of the game definitely aren’t where they should be and it’s going to take a fair bit of work and time to improve things (even if the will is there).

I could be wrong, but from what I’ve seen Xbox exclusives don’t seem to look much better maxed out on PC compared to the console versions. Either there’s orders from higher ups to keep the differences small or the studios just don’t have the time/resources to put the extra effort into the PC versions.

I dont think anyone here cares about the console version. We are discussing the PC version and it’s shortcomings.Try to keep up m8.

Well, I do care about the console version. It is frustrating as seen in series s. and even in the x. My Forza FM7 in One because I also have GT7 and it does give that feeling of quality game in the cars and models. In this Forza I found an incredible plastic sensation. and not to mention the car sounds and some modeling😕

So is there any hope that we can expect graphical updates in the future, particularly for PC? (Assuming the game doesn’t die)

We care about the console versions. The trailers were claimed to be tested at the same settings as the series X after all, it’s a downgrade on all platforms.

Its just not an excuse to say the comparisons used the wrong console performance mode when it’s literally the highest settings available on a PC
