Forza 5 and Thrustmaster TX = unplayable?

Hi everyone,

I’ve bought a TX wheel a month ago and while it’s really awesome on the PC with games like Assetto Corsa or F1 2015 on the XB1 it’s horrible with Forza 5. I’ve tried multiple settings I’ve found here and on other sites/Youtube, but the feeling while driving is still on of the worst I’ve ever seen.

Feedback on the wheel feels realy disconnected from the car. Sensivity on the first few degrees of rotation on the wheel is insane. A slight rotation on a perfekt straight often makes the car go nuts and the rear goes off! Also the resistance on those first DOR is really soft. It gets way harder the more you turn the wheel. Reducing the sensitivity on the wheel makes the car more stable but softens the resistance at the center even more which feels extremely weird.

Also the ingame wheel plus the telemetry wheel rotation aren’t in synch with the the rotation of the TX wheel. No matter what DOR I set for the wheel.

Anyone else with the same issues? Or maybe some tips how to setup my wheel/reset it/whatever? Firmware is uptodate on my wheel btw.

With Forza 6 upcoming I’m really concerned… I wanted to buy the Ultimate Edition, but not with the game being unplayable like Forza 5…

Yup I agree 100%. The force feedback in Forza 5 is horrible with a wheel. When I had my TX I stopped using it with the game. The controller has way better feedback and is much easier to control the car with. Hopefully they make it better for Forza 6 but I have my doubts. Playing with the TX was extremely frustrating as the cars spun out way too easily. Any input through a corner caused the back end to do a tank slapper at random.

The TX was amazing with Project Cars. I can’t play that game with a controller but it’s awesome with the TX wheel. You can feel everything the car is doing and inputs on he wheel translate well into what you want the car to do. Turn 10 needs to poach the force feedback developers from slightly mad studios.

I recently got my Fanatec V2 wheel adapter to play it on the Xbox One. I am totally amazed at the feel in this wheel. I had the thrustmaster Wheel from the day they were released and I agree it was not the best but I however don’t think it was as bad as you describe. My Fanatec is just AMAZING in Forza 5 and I expect even more from Forza 6.

What is your past experience with wheels? Would like to know your references.

As has been said, I thought FM5 was fun with a wheel, until I played PCARS.

Don’t those converters have huge input lag and/or deadzones with limited force feedback (more like rumble)? I was thinking of getting one to make my G27 compatible but those converters cost as much as a cheap wheel and have mediocre results, so I heard.

I totally agree as well. In fact, the only way I am hoping that we can get a better feel with the TX and FM5 or FM6 is if FM6 provides ranges of settings for the assists rather than just Traction Control on or off. Every sim out there including iRacing, Assetto Corsa, Gran Tursimo, Project Cars all offer ranges on the assists to help customize the car to the track for the feel. At any rate, I wrote an entire message on this in the FM6 wish list for ranges. But it is very true that the TX does not work well with FM5.

So then I was excited to use Xbox One Streaming with Windows 10 to help adjust the wheel with the TX software on the PC. But I found out that we cannot even stream to Windows 10 using the TX wheel. WE can only use the X1 controller on the PC for streaming to Windows 10. So I am trying to get the word out that we need the TX to work on Windows 10 using Xbox One streaming.

I wonder if this problem only exists with the TX wheel or also with the Mad Catz steering wheel? The TX is an awesome wheel which is pretty obvious in other racing games, but in Forza it’s just aweful.

I hope this is a Forza 5 launch-title issue. They had two years to implement proper wheel-support into FM6, so they better got it right.

I’m thinking you’ll find unfortunately for wheel users, FM6 will be more controller emphasized, especially with the release of the Elite controller and how much T10 are showcasing the game with it and how the paddles on the back are perfect for shifting. But I do think there will be better FFB signals in FM6. Just my opinion.

You know what, I have the same problem with the 458 Spider, in regards to cars spinning out too easily. It’s sad that a wheel costing 3 times as much has similar issues to my cheap wheel, as the TX has supposedly great force feedback and my wheel has none. I find a controller is much better to play with Forza 5. I am hopeful that they will finally optimize the wheels in Forza 6, but if not, I think I will just sell my wheel if it feels like it did in Forza 5. I haven’t played much of Horizon 2 with the wheel, but it did feel better than Forza 5, so fingers crossed for Forza 6.

By the way, it’s not the TX wheel that is the problem in FM5 even though it was pretty much made for FM5. Unfortunately, it’s FM5 itself. The lack of ranges for Traction Control, Stability and ABS along with the FFB settings being extremely basic is why FM5 feels like you are driving on ice. It’s not the TX. Or even with TC on, I have tried and tried to get the feel of rubber on the road with FM5 and it is just not there. I thought FM5 was awesome in the beginning until I played iRacing, Assetto Corsa and Project Cars on the PC with the TX. I am not giving up on FM though as I am probably going to pre order FM6 ultimate soon. I just want it to be able to stream to Windows 10 so I can leave my TX plugged into my PC and hopefully utilize the TX software on the PC to help with FM. We can only hope for better physics in FM6 with damper and pressure and all the other settings for the wheel we get on other sims.

Forza 5 is horrible with a wheel, its better in horizon 2 but thats because the cars a naturally more grippy in that game. Its a shame because i wouldve really liked to have used a wheel in a racing game but i dont see them changing things too much. The only way ive found the wheel to work properly is to set the wheel dor to 360 and set the in game dor to 370. It makes it more playable but not enjoyable. The cars do slide too much unless you use traction which slows you down too much or make all you cars have grip tunes which 9 times out of 10 will leave you uncompetitive. Sadly if theres one thing project cars has over forza its driving with the wheel and i wouldve liked to have seen turn 10 crush its competition on all fronts with this game. I would never expect to be faster with a wheel than a controller, but a wheel is more enjoyable to use. Hopefully they worked on some things for forza 6 and ill be pleasantly suprised, but im not getting my hopes up.

Really hope they get the wheel sorted out for Forza 6, bought my 458 Spider solely for the Forza series, play third party games like Project Cars and Assetto Corsa and F1 on my PC with my Logitech G27. If the wheel doesn’t work well with Forza 6, I’ll have to sell it and take a loss :frowning:

By the way, how was Forza 4 with a wheel? Did it have the same issues as Forza 5 or did it feel more natural?

I think forza 4 was better, but i had a different wheel. Having a tx on a new system i expected it to be much better but its just not enjoyable. The tx has 900 degrees of rotation and i have to play it with 360 its just not right. Project cars is basiclly the opposite of forza when it comes to controller types, its better with a wheel where as forza is better with a controller. This sucks because i really dont like project cars, its a horrible game. I still play it though time to time when i feel the urge to use the wheel.

Expect the same in FM6.

To fix it they would have to rewrite the entire FFB systems, and include proper wheel calibration.

Hello baptized,
No this is a very high end wheel and expensive ( 1000 dollars ) for the Xbpx One and it is really good but I guess for that amount it should be. I think you are talking about the TX adapter and that was a pretty good thing too but the Thrustmaster wheel is not as high end hence a 1/4 of the price.

Yeah but why do you need a wheel adapter? Isn’t the Fanatec compatible with the Xbox One right out of the box? It says so on their website.

http://www.fanatec.com/us-en/wheel-bases/clubsport-wheel-base-v2-us.html

I used to have the Thrustmaster TX until it broke after 6 months, besides that though it worked great within Forza. The only issue I had in Forza with it, was the small force feedback dead zone at the wheels center. I used to run full 900° in all road cars, about 360° in the Lotus E21, and I think around 530° in other race cars. I never once had any drivability issues, and I found FM5 to be a much better game with a wheel than without it. As it felt more alive. I also used to run the FFB between 50 to 60%.

As luck would have it, I have a few replays posted up on my youtube channel from when I had a working TX.

And those are just for driving normally, I have a couple for drifting on the TX wheel also.

did you try changing the sensitivity adjustment on the wheel itself?

http://forums.forza.net/turn10_postst25789_TX-Wheel---what-does--sensitivity--do.aspx

I also changed the degree of rotation down to 330 in the forza profile setting and it feels good to me.

Changing the sensitivity improves the overreaction of the car but worsens the resistance at the center even more. I tried some settings in the last few days and I found that setting the wheel to 900 degree with FFB pretty much at max and sim steering off feels best. Still not how I think it should be but still by far the best. The lower the DOR of the wheel the more the cars react on subtle movements on the wheel.

In that case, I’m screwed with my 240 degrees of rotation. For me, only the F1 and Indy cars feel good with my cheap wheel, but that’s probably because the open wheelers have something along the lines of 360 degrees of rotation or so in real life.
