Does FM7 on Xbox One X look better on a 4k or 1080p monitor?

I’ve been playing FM7 on the Xbox One X on a 1080p monitor, and am pretty happy with the reduced aliasing compared to other Forza games, due to it rendering at 4k then downsampling. I’m considering getting a 4k monitor, but it doesn’t seem certain to me that it will look better, as it won’t be downsampling any more, so I’m concerned it might actually have worse aliasing on a 4k monitor than a 1080p monitor. Has anyone tried it on both to be able to comment on which gives the least noticeable aliasing issues? My 1080p monitor is 24", and I’d be getting a 27" 4k monitor.

At least wait until half way through January after CES. It’s possible that a whole new line up of 4K monitors will be shown off for 2018.
Hopefully there will be more options that include HDR as a feature this year. I wouldn’t personally buy anything that did not feature HDR.

I would not advise you to get a 4k monitor in 27" because its too small for that kind of resolution to really make an impact. 27" is best in 1440p in my opinion.
Keep your 1080p monitor for PC gaming and invest that 4k monitor money in a 55" 4k TV with HDR. You get more out of that than out of a 27" 4k monitor (that probably wont have HDR unless you want to spend well over 1k)
If you are only interested in having your question answered: I think it would look better on a 4k monitor. - But then again, HDR is here big time and will only continue to come an impress us in games. Dont buy any TV or monitor without HDR if you consider gaming on it. HDR10 that is, not HDR-processing.

One of my x1x consoles is on a desk and the ‘monitor’ is actually a 4k HDR 43" TV. It’s great! 4k requires more size for less distance than standard HD. So sitting ~2.5’ away from a 43" TV is almost ideal. I have a 65" at home, and much beyond 8’, I really don’t see the detail gain over HD, and I sit at ~10’ from it. HDR is nice though.

I know before I got the 1X all the Forzas looked nice on my 4K 55 inch tv but now…BIG DIFFERENCE. I mean I still play FM5 and 6 too, very big difference in picture quality between FM7 and FM5. The X enhancement is very noticeable

and it’s looks great.

If I was you and you’ll be playing within a driving wheel distance… 3-5 feet… I would go with a 32-47" 1080p monitor. I don’t think the human eye can really see the difference… not once racing. I use a 47" 1080p monitor one the XBone… With that being said I use a 34" curved monitor on the PC and in Forza Apex… run at 3440x1440 and though it looks great… once in race I really don’t notice that much difference except the FOV is a little wider. If you can afford a 4K in a plus 40" than get it… especially if you play off the couch with a controller.

Your money your call! Good Luck!

I play at a desk with a wheel and have a 40" 4k HDR tv. It feels perfect for this type of game.

To answer your actual question, 4k at 3840x2160 looks better than 4k at 1920x1080. I know because I used to downscale until I got a 27" 4k monitor, which had an accident involving a heavy Xmas ornament after only a month so I bought the 40" 4k TV with HDR and I love it!

i have never heard if a 40" HDR TV, can you name the brand and model?
cheers

There may be more aliasing but texture details will be much more crisp at 4K than at 1080p.

I think there are one or two, the Samsung model number: UE40MU6120KXXU for one

That’s the one I have.

I have the KU6300 which was the previous model year of that series in 55". They are HDR compatible but not capable of full HDR10 specs. I don’t remember exactly how that whole situation breaks down but the One S and X both show it as HDR compatible. For the price you can’t beat them. Great TV for gaming. FM7 looks amazing on the X in 4K. Definite improvement in over all graphics plus less lag in the menus waiting for car images to load.

Ah, okay. And they have true HDR10 panel?

I recently purchased a 43 inch 4K TV and Forza looks much better on the new TV (in my opinion) than on my old 1080. Purchased the TV over black Friday weekend for 275 bucks. LG 6300 series, 43 inch. It’s not just Forza though, every game seems to look much smoother and the colors are more defined on the new TV. I am using an Xbox one X. I highly suggest buying a 4K TV.

I have an Xbox One X and a 4K, 27 inch monitor, and it’s amazing. Tha jump from 1080 to 4K is very noticeable in all games that support 4K, including Forza 7. Will not regret.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I ended up getting the 27" 4k monitor. I’d got a so-called gaming 1080p monitor that I felt was a really poor monitor, so am returning that and the new 4k monitor has replaced it. I may get a 4k TV at some point in the future, but I’d rather wait for HDMI 2.1 models to become available to get something that truly matches the X’s capabilities. This monitor is an IPS panel rather than TN panel, and I think I will never again buy a TN panel monitor, as I don’t notice the difference between 5ms and 1ms at all when gaming, and the colour space and consistency across viewing angles is so much better with this IPS screen.

As for 4k vs 1080p, it is a mixed bag for FM7. It does make the aliasing worse, it looks more like FM5/6, just in higher resolution. But when there isn’t aliasing, it’s noticeably crisper at 4k. I think overall the higher resolution is probably better in practical terms, as it gives you a little better ability to see the detail of the next bend when you’re approaching at high speed from a distance. So there is an unavoidable trade off between aliasing and resolution, but I really hate aliasing, and even I’m happy with playing it in 4k, so I’d say most people will probably prefer playing it in 4k.

Me too. holding out for the HDMI 2.1 models. HDMI 2.1’s doubled bandwidth should herald a return to the 240Hz frame rates that came in with the 3D craze 6-8 years ago; I need those higher frame rates to keep from perceiving judder in action shows and gaming sessions. Hopefully this year’s CES will have a bunch; otherwise likely waiting til 2019.

A couple of notes if you’re waiting on HDMI 2.1 …

(1) HDMI 2.1 does not double bandwidth … but increases it from 18Gbps to 48Gbps.

(2) While there may be some 2.1 hardware that shows up at CES, it’s realistically going to be 3rd or 4th quarter of 2018 before HDMI LA is actually certifying hardware as HDMI 2.1 compliant. Per their 2.1 release, it will take them that long to get the testing process up and running.

The lighting is definitely the biggest difference on a 4K TV, especially the glare off the brake lights. Night time braking will light up the bottom of the screen for sure. I LOVE IT

Do you talk Forza 7 or Gran Turismo Sport?
In my not very humble opinion which i will now state as a fact, the braking lights and rear lights in general in Forza 7 are to me the biggest weakness when it comes to lighting in this game. More often than not when following other cars, some of those rear lights dont even look like they are on and the braking lights are sooo weak, you almost dont see them. That has to be a bug.
And i am running the game on an LG B7 OLED with HDR, so its clearly not the TV at fault.
