DLSS Update

Any thoughts on the new DLSS update?

A very welcome and unexpected addition to the game for pc users.

I’m on console, so it doesn’t affect me. Though I am readying myself for a landslide of complaints (which will likely be valid) from our resident PC users once this update goes live.

I hope it’s good and solves some of the issues present with TAA currently. DLSS has always been my favourite AA solution so my hopes are high.

My expectations are low though. The implementation of AA solutions in this game have all been terrible, I expect this to be no different. The question is will it’s downsides be something I’m ok with. TAA (which DLSS is based on) is the solution with the least terrible downside IMO, so maybe it’ll be the same deal with DLSS.

Is the update live yet?

Tuesday evening in the UK, normally around 7PM

No performance drop with ray tracing set to extreme vs ray tracing off. No ray traced reflections, they are same as ssr.
DLSS does not improve frame rate even when set to balanced…
Running on 3070ti laptop…
What is going on…???
Am I missing something…???

the best visual update to the game, thank you forza, now I feel like it was worth the money!

I’ve got 3080 and can confirm that the update works (tested on newest drivers 526.47). Specifics:

  • RT reflections work as advertised (extreme settings), that is they add self reflections to the player car - the environment will still be reflected using Cube Maps, but minor details (such as spoilers, side mirrors etc) will now be reflected in the car.

  • The patch notes state that extreme RT settings will add AI cars to RT reflections in photomode, let me clarify: AI cars will be reflected in player car using this setting, but only in Photomode. The “AI cars” mean Drivatars ONLY, no traffic or other players’ cars will be reflected. Also the reflected cars do not appear to have lighting processed on them so they do look very “flat”.

  • DLSS works but quality does take a big hit, I play at 3440x1440 and setting DLSS to Quality raises framerate form ~80 to ~95 when compared to TAA. So overall nice boost, but the image quality suffers pretty badly. I imagine that in 4k the visual degradation is less noticeable, but in 1440 I would not recommend using DLSS at all, unless you are desperate for frames.

  • DLAA does have a performance cost when compared to TAA (~70 with DLAA from ~80 with TAA) and to be honest… It does suffer from similar issues as DLSS (very noticeable ghosting on high contrast objects such as power lines against bright sky), on the other hand the image looks sharper or crisper if you will, especially on still images.

So yea… DLSS is not something that I will use, but the new RT options are nice though, save me opening up Cheat Engine

EDIT: Some screens showing comparison between TAA, DLAA and DLSS Quality @ 1440p (Behold my Paint skills highlighting the most noticeable issues, however screenshots do not give the full “feel” of the quality), open in full screen to see the differences:

TAA:

DLAA

DLSS

EDIT2: Oh, and a bonus showing AI car reflected in player’s car using Extreme RT settings:

I can confirm for DLSS and DLAA. 3080 too.
but hey, menus got way more lag now.

I am still getting ~85 fps at native 1440p and same ~85 fps with DLSS set to balanced.
Will try to reset the game tomorrow to see if that helps.

I expect better results, well, i can stay on 4x MSAA

Yepp, all the hype around RT reflections in this update and all we got is a toggle for something that was available through cheat engine since game launch.

What a disappointing implementation of RT…

If you still get “hyped” about anything concerning FH5 you clearly have learned nothing over the past year. At this point, we don’t even get new cars anymore.
Everything is working as promised without crashing the game or hitting the performance too hard, so I call this a big success.

I tried using the dlss settings from quality all the way to ultra performance and it had zero effect on my frame rates. I can see the image getting significantly crappier as I move from quality to ultra performance, but the frame rate stays exactly the same. Around 110fps with a 3080 12gb and a 12700k @5ghz

Welcome to the forum!
Are you sure you are not CPU-bound?

I have to agree, both DLSS and DLAA look kinda awful. Reducing sharpness helps, but still no comparison to TAA. The new raytracing effects are underwhelming as well. AI car reflections are photo mode only - even on extreme. Basically, everything we get are self car reflections, that are almost impossible to notice while racing.

Upgrading cars feels like a hard task with the slow movement. Causing me to want to solve it. Now i know it’s affecting more people than just me

I use 1080p resolution and get 105 FPS with DLSS (Quality or balanced) against 100 FPS with TAA, with graphics maxed out. AA is much better with TAA though, so that’s what I will keep using. No lag in the menus here. Regarding the reflections, I don’t care about them, so this update brings nothing new to me.

Yup, it looks like TAA is the best AA solution so far, although I am surprised that people claim they have no performance uptake with DLSS… Either they are CPU bound or maybe it’s a driver issue? I’m on newest available nVidia Drivers (526.47) and generally I see about 15 fps improvement with “Quality” DLSS as compared to TAA. Not worth the image quality hit though.

Also, as often is the case, Motion Blur does not play nicely with DLSS (yes, I know there are people who say that motion blur is the source of all evil and what not, but IMHO it does have a place in a racing game), check out the rear bumper ghosting with Motion Blur on…

And off:

EDIT: Oh, on the side note… Yes, menus are laggy as hell.
