Why can I only seem to be able to drive “Rental” cars in Rivals, restricted and I cannot tune and use cars from my garage in Rivals in this iteration of FM?
The Leaderboards… it looks as if some folks are able to run tuned cars… I am only presented with Rentals… for the Maple Valley Track Day, event for example.
Answering my own Q:
• Players may only have the option to choose “Rent Car” in Rival events even though they own a car for that Rival event.
so, it’s known a Bug.

I think unless specified as breakout or open most rivals will challenge you to bring a ‘spec homologated’ car to the track and keep the field even by only allowing rentals. This ensures no tweaking to remain within homologation rules are applied to the cars. I don’t think you should be seeing any tuned cars or upgraded cars within the ‘spec rivals homologated’ leaderboards.
If you run the same track/ class within freeplay you will see a leaderboard that has both the people who have set their overall best time on that track in the spec homologated division and those with tuned cars still meeting the homologated restrictions. Or open class where you may see a B class car on the same leaderboard with someone who has run an X class car for example.
Hope that makes some sense - goes some way to answering your question. If not, well I tried lol. Plus spec homologated rivals leaderboards is somewhat of a mouthful - so I reckon points for effort on making up that phrase lol.

I guess I was just assuming that because I was being presented w/restrictions (must be Historic Road Racing, PI not more than 475, Power not greater than 450… ) that I’d be allowed to tune something from my garage. Back in the days, it’d just say “must be stock only” if that were the case(?), but we all know what they say 'bout assuming ;^)

I am having this issue too. As you pointed out, it seems as if it is a known bug.
For example, I am trying to do the Lime Drive featured rivals event right now. I have several cars eligible, my Prelude for example, that meet all of the requirements (homologation rules, event restrictions, etc.) but I am only able to select a rental car. When I chose the rental Prelude, it wasn’t even homologated, instead being completely stock in D class. After almost 10 laps I was wondering why my times were so far behind everyone else, lol!
