A.I racers are a nightmare

It’s 2018 and 11 games into the franchise I think and yet A.I still have no player awareness, the key point in any racing game is that you make manouvers to slip inside on a corner or make a outside move etc and the 1st one on the racing line takes the spot, but Forza A.I has no player or collision detection, the A.I will smash you clean of your course and any collision you have with them they always seem to be the one with the better outcome, I like to have the A.I set as hard as possible but I’ve found the better you make them the more likely you are to have a crash. I really enjoy the game and all the hard work that’s been put in but games 10 years+ older than this have much better awareness with their A.I

I’ve been playing unbeatable lately and they have really gotten aggressive. If I trade paint with a Drivatar, I see them do the “wind up”; they slowly sway to the right, then swerve to the left to slam me into a wall.

Almost every time I pass a Drivatar close (but not touching), I get a glimpse of their front end cutting back into me; like their trying to do that “police maneuver” to spin me around.

And cutting in on the turns… this is getting annoying. I think perhaps they’ve trained them too well to mimic their namesake driver.

Sounds like human players to me, as opposed to professional racing car drivers.

They are quite aggressive in this game as opposed to 3, but I don’t blame them, they’re just trying to bring that “Online Experience” to your singleplayer game. They’re doing a good job.

Why would we want the multiplayer aspect added to a single player part of the game, especially when aggressive drivers are the worst part of online racing. I racing had the right idea, if you drive like a tool you get banned from their servers

The whole “Drivatar” system started out as an attempt to make AI that learned from and mimicked real players and their behaviors.

Good intentions to do something new with the CPU drivers, as most racing game AI just followed the same exact lines robotically with absolutely no variation or deviation that actual humans might have. The results still haven’t exactly matched up with their original vision, however.

But that’s what road racing is all about, all cars hold the racing line because it’s the fastest and the warmest part of the track, all they have to do is give them free will on overtaking manoeuvres and collision detection, R Factor 2 is a really old game however their A.I would drive on your bumper, overtake you and battle you in every corner without ever making contact, it just makes the game 100% more enjoyable, they want to mimic real drivers but real drivers won’t blindly carry on their line when another car pushes in. This game is great and with all the work and effort that has been put in it just seems like when it came to A.I it was a case of " That will do "

The difference is real people, even professional race car drivers, make mistakes. Computer AI was always perfect, and in many games of the time wouldn’t even acknowledge your existence on the track, holding to their pre-programmed lines were all that mattered. To the detriment of realism, believability, safety, fun, etc.

Things have come quite a ways since then, and it’s still not great, but it’s better than it was in some regards. There was a time when you couldn’t brake early at all or you would be rammed off the road. Now, AI drivers will actually try to brake and swerve to avoid you if following close behind. They may still hit you depending on how early you brake and how fast they are going, but like a human they will still try to avoid an accident. But other times they straight up cause the accidents. Again, not great but still better in various ways.

I frequently do worse things to the AI. And in this game it frequently does worse things to itself.

I hate the AI all together just got rubberbanded on the last lap on Goliath and finished in 4th. Another 1hour 30 mins wasted.

Why is it wasted? You still get nearly the same amount of credits and xp for last place (even a DNF) as you do for coming in top 3. Only a slight bonus comparatively for 1st. It barely matters how good you do in this game, in any event. As long as you see it through to the end, you’re given ample rewards (although credits earned across the board should be well higher than they are). The only time finish position really matters is with the seasonal championships and those specific rewards.

Makes me wonder what my Drivatar is doing in single player races. Hopefully, not acting like an idiot. BTW, kinda sucks daily credit bonuses were removed from FH4 for your Drivatar participating in other races.

To me the funniest thing is when I’m about to pass some slower AI and they’ll swerve in front of me to try and block me. This sucks when I have damage on and can’t react in time, but things like that can make races more interesting and give the the AI some character. You also gotta remember this is an arcade racer, and there is nothing resembling actual racing in there. The closest you can get is with unbeatable difficulty, you may actually find some race setups that aren’t guaranteed wins - but most everything else is designed around starting you toward the rear of the pack and finishing first, within 3 short laps or 4 mile sprints, which are almost all of the default “race” setups in the game. That’s not racing, that’s giving casual players the fake thrills of passing a pack of cars in a few short minutes to come out on top. Even on Pro and Expert (and Unbeatable to a lesser extent), the AI leaders will start braking earlier and taking turns poorly towards the end of races to allow you to catch up and pass them to win. It’s all a sham.

Anyone else finding that the driveatars are not consistent when playing? What up with the driveatars always running into you or pushing you off of the road? Feels like I should be in a Demo Derby instead of a race.

The Ai seem to simulate other players, not a race. That could be an option… Ai aggression… HIGH… MEDIUM… LOW.

I usually play on unbeatable and also noticed weird tendencies and just odd behavior from driveretards especially when I tested my Divo when passing them their cars wobble for some reason. I guess this applies to the mindset they aren’t exactly supposed to drive better than you, just be impossibly faster. “Unbeatable” isn’t the appropriate word for the difficulty level.

I see wobbling and then there’s a variation, slow wobbling sliding, looks really silly. I have seen wobbling in Street / Road races, but slow sliding variation only in Road races. Or maybe it’s the same, but just different looking manifestation of same thing on different car models.

Yep, lately after these last updates, i’ve noticed that they’re ramming a lot.
They are inspired in online ranked races lol.

same after updat also the ai loves to ram me in any race on highly skilled

I’ve noticed the AI have became highly aggressive since the Lego DLC was introduced.

My main issues with AI are:

  1. Invisible Forcefield around AI Cars that push you off track or make you swerve randomly.

  2. Lead AI have almost 200% throttle at the beginning and end of every race (expert - unbeatable).

  3. AI Cars 4th and 3rd place deliberately ramming and swerving infront of you at uncontrollable speeds (worse on S1 - S2 races) and with their Forcefields make passing not a skill but down to pure luck.
