A 6-Year Hiatus for This? I’m Going Back to FM7

Omg. If you told me that was a screenshot from forza motorsport (1) i wouldve believed you. How does it look like an original xbox game??!!!?

This is my motto for open world racing games. However, for closed track racers, I expect the graphics fidelity to be much better since there’s no need for pop-in.

Each to their own, but Horizon and open world racers are about beautiful vistas where the graphics really matter and the physics don’t.

Circuit racing is about the driving above all else, and if something wants to be simulation/realism based then it’s physics, physics, physics.

Otherwise you might as well go play Project Cars 3.

I’ve just taken a look at the original and noticed that they don’t even bothered to replicate the correct D40/M2 font.

When I look at the tow hook they seem to have corrected the colour from red to black and the “outline” of the cover for the lights from black to green (transparent) which means they’ve touched the car.
The screenshots may also be misleading when it comes to the reflection and details in general as the FM7 one is obviously taken under different (darker) lighting conditions while the one of the new FM was taken with full and direct sunlight.

Well, I never said in my post that physics didn’t matter. Please don’t put words in my mouth.

How is this possible?

I refrained from talking about the guts of the game (the physics and graphics) in my original post because I wanted to focus on just the content because I think that is what will affect the majority of customers. Although I have spent hundreds of hours across the 12 previous Forza games, I would still call myself a “normie” and probably fall into the majority of fans/customers. I don’t play on PC, I play on console on a 5 year old TV so I clearly don’t put too much emphasis on the graphics, and I don’t have a sim rig or play on wheel so the physics aren’t the highest priority for me, although they are important and they are good. I’m not in the loop for sim racers, but I assume there are better options out there for that subgroup. Most likely on PC that enables mods for any track or any car. It probably isn’t engaging as a “game” or offer a fun/rewarding entertainment experience, but offer the best physics and realistic driving experience. I guess I never thought of FM as that peak sim racer franchise. More of a “baby’s first sim racer”, an introduction to simulation racing with an emphasis on more realistic driving/physics than the typical arcade racers like Project Gotham Racing or Need for Speed, but still with an emphasis on making it for entertainment with story modes and showcases. So not a true hardcore sim racer, but an arcade game with some sim racer qualities. It was still for entertainment as it’s first priority.

I’m more interested in the “entertainment” of the games. The breadth of content is a huge factor in this. The game loop should be fun, including rewards and variety of races, locations, and car combinations. Give me a reason to keep collecting cars or keep completing championships. This is where this game is extremely lacking. It just feels cold and lifeless.

I will bow out as more of the experts or more knowledgeable players discuss the physics and graphics changes between FM7 and FM23 because I just don’t see a difference between the two games. Maybe it’s the 5 year old LG tv or playing on Xbox series X with a controller.

I think I’m about to tap out. By far, this is the least amount of fun I have ever had with the Forza franchise, across both lineups of games - and I’m stretching to call any of my experiences in this game “fun”. It’s absolutely staggering how bland and broken this is. You can upgrade a car well into another PI class and ostensibly far above the AI cars, and still be beaten mercilessly by them. This makes no sense. Someone make it make sense. Because I know I’m not building these cars like an idiot.

I feel exactly as you do here. Growing up, I had a selection of wheels (ACT abs – remember them?, Logi Momo, Thrustmaster NASCAR) and even had a Fanatec with wheel stand for a time around when FM4 came out. I’ve since sold that last set-up and never replaced it. Not because I can’t afford it, but because I just don’t think I’d find a huge amount of value in it because I’m like you: I love love LOVE cars and I play these games because in addition to the work I do with cars, I want to get as close to them as possible and I don’t really need a wheel for that.

Not just “cars”, but the stories behind them. Which is why Porsche Unleashed was so cool; it was a veritable encyclopedia of Porsche. Even GT7 and EVEN Dirt 2.0 (and it’s looking like WRC 23 has a nice hit of this as well) have a neat story element that’s there to show that cars are more about going from A to B, beating your best segment times and so forth.

FM, in its current state, seems to have completely missed the boat on all of that. I’m not kidding when I say I don’t think of GT7 (or even FM7) when I look at the current FM; I see the next entrant in the Asphalt series. And that is…that is not good.

I also love love LOVE travel and the history associated with the world’s racing tracks which is why the low location count – and low IS the right way to put it – is strike two for me.

I also just want to pick up a game and enjoy it. Don’t want to have to muck around with deadzone settings etc, don’t want to have to worry that a bug is going to bust up my SP campaign – short as it is – in one fell swoop. There’s strike three.

Sorry this shot doesn’t make sense. There was no Ferrari FXX-K, let alone the Evo variant in FM 5.

PICNIC?

Agree with “bland” being the word.

But I still like it more than FM7. I just miss the racing series we won’t get back.

Something else I’ve just realised is the introduction is almost comical.

The first part with the E-Ray on Maple Valley? That’s fair enough and appropriate, new car to the series driving on a series classic course, good.

But then the 2nd part is the last 2 laps of an endurance race in a racing car.

2 things that you will simply not experience a single time in the career mode.

with a pit stop, so that’s 3 things

Yeah that’s true isn’t it? Lol single spot parking too.

you mean the way everybody ends up in the same pit box during practice/waiting for the race?

Yep that’s the one. I think that’s a bug too, pretty funny one honestly

It’s nice to finally see actual pit stops though, we’ve been asking for ages!

That’s why we don’t have endurance races…there is only one pit box

I’m not much of a fan of Motorsport 7. Having said that, if all Turn 10 did was take that game, renew needed licenses, add in new ones, and just otherwise fixed everything that needed fixing…they would be in a better position right now.

History repeats itself. Mass Effect Andromeda. Anthem. Wolfenstein: Youngblood. Forza Horizon 5.
Cyberpunk 2077. Battlefield 2042. Redfall. Lord of the Rings: Gollum.
And now…add Forza Motorsport to the list.
