You make the call

Just wanted to get the pulse of the community. I know there are certain “corner cutting” examples that are more controversial than others. For instance, I know the question on whether or not cutting the top of Eau Rouge at Spa can cause a ton of debate (horse is dead - let’s leave it alone). The specific one I want to talk about is based on a race last night. I’m talking about turn 1 of Indy. Do you consider it “corner cutting” to get on the grass for turn 1 at Indy?

I’m asking because I suspect a racer was getting mad at me because I was grassing turn 1. I suspect because I had my headphones plugged in and on the ground (I actually do that a courtesy to other racers. My son can get noisy and keep him from getting over the Kinect, I plug in the headphones and mute the microphone.) I was looking - most of my turn 1s were rated clean. My last one was not and it wasn’t that I was trying to get an edge…I just blew the turn and got more grass than normal.

As you know, you can get a significant amount of grass on turn 1 and be rated clean. Just trying to get a sense of the community. What’s your take on turn 1 at Indy? I’m not looking to please everybody, but, I also don’t want a reputation as a dirty racer, so, your opinions do matter to me. Thanks.

My view generally is if the game gives you a clean lap then its all good.

I make one exception for myself. I refuse to cut the final turn at Yas. But in most other cases I believe if the game tells you it’s clean, then it’s clean.

IMO if its clean its legal.

This can become an issue in multiplayer lobbies when taking advantage of a section that probably should be dirty. Unless your hot lapping or the guy in front of you is taking advantage of the same corner I would be cautious in doing so in an online race. Taking an abnormal line is an easy way of causing a wreck and its hard to argue even when right that a line was clean if your tires aren’t on the track.

This was in the no-collision lobby, Tyrant, so, no danger of wrecking the guy. I could say it is like hotlapping but, I don’t need to open that can of worms in this thread, too.

Haha yeah don’t need that. For non collisions if it’s clean take the fastest line but if your already running a dirty lap I would try to keep all tires on the track as others may claim you dirtied it on the questionable corner. Personally I would likely take the corner as the guy in front so not to gain an advantage and if in front I would try to take the line that would normally border on clean/dirty.

I go by the honor system.

If I can live with myself afterwards, such has honestly accidental cutting from unintentional mistakes, or I got pushed there by another car, then all is good.

If the cut is ridiculous, and I know it shouldn’t be clean, then I don’t make excuses for myself. Try harder next time.

But then again, I pretty much only race AI, so I’m the only one to judge anyway.

Regarding the “Can I sleep at night?” question, I didn’t feel like I was cheating. I thought getting some grass at turn 1 of Indy was somewhat the norm. As I said, the time my Turn 1 was rated dirty I simply screwed up. I don’t think I gained an advantage because it probably slowed me down a little more by getting too much grass.

I like to get a bronze when I race to boost medal count for acheivements. Beyond that, I really don’t care so much about place. I’m not a win at all costs kind of guy. I think the suggestion of trying to keep at least two wheels on the track is good and that is what I’ll shoot for in the future.

I always try to keep two wheels on the track. If I run wide or cut slightly without catching a decert then that’s great. You can do that at Indy and Spa quite easily because the car is at the limit of control. The final turn at Yas however is a black and white ethical test that quite a few people seem to have failed. Sometimes the difference between driving the track and gaming it is a little too glaring imo.

Sounds like a plan.

And frankly, I wouldn’t worry too much about reputation. Compared to some of the real troublemakers you find online, most everyone here is a saint by default.

That first turn at Indy can be tricky, I’ve raced probably a thousand laps there between FM4 and FM5 and still have trouble on occasion getting through the turn without accidentally hitting grass. I’m not looking for any arguement a but I don’t believe intentional corner cutting is ok even if the game gives you a clean lap, just my opinion. That’s just how I choose to race and I realize others will race differently if the game allows it.

If the guy/girl I’m chasing cuts, I will cut. If they don’t, I don’t.

Otherwise, the worst I’ll do is straddle the bumper (although this can be a REAL good way to lose control).

This is RACING: Sparks will fly, wheels will go in the dirt. Just don’t go making up your own track

T-10 set the rules, if its Clean then its legal IMO.

Come on guys really? The whole reason for sticky grass is to keep people from “cheating” and T-10 either messed up on some areas and didn’t place it, or they left it out because it might be a high incident prone area were you might need some room to avoid an accident. Just because its “clean” doesn’t make it OK. People taking advantage of it is why the leaderboards and regular online races are so skewed and almost any league is gonna penalize you for cutting. However, I personally don’t get angry about it when I race non-league stuff as long as it doesn’t cause collisions. For the OP, I think you’re good man since no collision lobbies are more hot lapping with multiple people rather than racing.
