You feel FM4 sounds were more impressive overall?

Right off the bat, I was blown away by FM5’s sound design…

Very clever audio ques tell you when you’re on the edge of grip, and how fast your going. The wind rushing past your car, the sound of your engine going into and coming out of tunnels… the whoosh sound as you zoom past trackside objects… brilliant.

Even the turbo/supercharger sounds are spot on. Engine sounds are very good too, however, I feel some cars have little to no off-throttle sound and the downshifting sounds funny… like its too synthesized… this is not on all cars mind you, I’ve only encountered it in a few.

The ZL1 for example has almost no off-throttle sound from the first-person cams. Also the Jag XKR (the blue one in rentals)… where’s that menacing V8 growl on the down revs? All is fine however, once you shift to third person.

I understand the game was rushed to make the launch date, but I’m hoping those beautiful downshifting and off-throttle sounds from FM4 make their return in part 6.

Also, on rare occasions, the engine sound would cut out completely for a split second. And I’ve noticed sometimes I hear cars around me really well while racing, at times… not.

Anyway, great game… great sound design. Hoping to see major improvements in FM6. :slight_smile:

Some car sounds in FM5 seem to be spot on and others though are the complete opposite. I’ve especially noticed a problem with the Aston Martin DBS and Vanquish. Those two cars are very quiet in game and yet IRL they are much louder with a deeper growl and a menacing exhaust burble that you don’t really hear in game. The Mitsubishi Evo’s in game also seem way too quiet, if there are other cars around me when I’m in an Evo I can barely hear my own car.

Horizon 2 seemed to do better with individual car sounds with the exception of no sound changes when upgrading exhaust, but the sound leveling overall is poor. I have to turn up the volume on my system about 3 notches higher when I play Horizon to be at the same volume that I’m used to playing FM5 at.

The RR Wraith is louder on the inside. You can barely hear it from 3rd person. I think they mixed up the filters.

Overall I think FM4 and FM5 both have stellar sound, but some cars don’t sound quite right, like DeathMetal said. Also, some ambient noises are a little odd, like the “cat meow” sound we’ve all heard.

The overall EQ of the sound is awful, you have to constantly adjust the sound for hood view depending on the car. Really annoying. Also many cars loose their unique sound in this view. Sucks for a hood view driver from Forza 4 obviously this option needs to be configurable.

First of all, thanks for the responses (finally).

@DeathMetalRacer

The DBS and Vanquish sounds were among the first ones I found to be not very impressive at all. The sound lacks character and depth - it sounds synthesized and weak. You’re absolutely right when you say that exhaust burble is missing. The AM cars sounded very impressive in FM4. As for 5, the One-77’s sound is fine, although I was expecting much more detail. The DBR… that is SPOT ON!

Same problem with the Evo… bought an Evo X the other day, FULL upgrades… and you can hardly hear the engine/exhaust. It’s as if the car is primarily powered by the turbos! Again, FM4’s Evo X sounded loud and brutal, much like the AM road cars.

The sound not changing after full cam/exhaust upgrades issue is also present in FM5 - I excitedly purchased a GTR, maxed it out to nearly 1000 HP… and the only thing that changed was louder turbos. face palm

Come to think of it, the only change that you see in the Supra as well are exhaust popping sounds and louder turbos.

But then again, I upgraded an M5 and M3 and both sounded fierce and unrelenting after max upgrades.

I’m actually happy with H2’s sounds… there’s more detail on the off-throttle sounds, and some engines really do sound more realistic than FM5’s version. I believe this was the case with FM4/H1 as well. Remember how ridiculously good the ZR1 sounded in H1?

Sound leveling wasn’t the best in H1, and it looks like they’ve held up the same approach in H2. I have all other sounds set at 8, and engine 10; I have my sound system cranked up to nearly 65/70% just to hear and FEEL the engine/exhaust sounds. They feel numb. Maybe it’s high-time they included a SFX focus option, ala FM4. And then the race ends or you pass a speed trap, and your sound system comes alive as if a cannon just went off. lol

BTW, what metal bands are you in to, if at all?

@B Wald Big Mek

I haven’t driven the Wraith yet, but same problem with the ZL1… it sounds like a wierd boat from the first person cams with practically no off-throttle sound (think Grid Autosport), and the moment you switch to chase view, you hear those signature Camarao V8 exhaust notes. How strange.

Haven’t encountered the cat meow sound yet, though I wasn’t that pleased to hear some of the downshifting sounds on upgraded cars…they sounded too whiny and synthesized… again, lacking character. Wasn’t the case with FM4.

@Ridin Sideways

Are you talking about the hood view sounds in FM5 or H2?

I agree, the engine sounds in some cars sound better in cockpit (you can FEEL the exhaust more). But undisputed is the chase cam, which lets you hear the most detail in exhaust notes and engine.
