WTH am I doing wrong? Multiplayer and can't even MEDAL!

Let me preface this by saying I never… I mean never, have had problems competing in any video game I play online. Until now. I truly am just baffled.

So I’m racing in the C-Class Beginner whatever series. I’ve probably done about 20 races or so and I’ve gotten bronze 5 times and nothing else. I’m either getting completely butt rammed from the get go and spun out to where I’m out of the race entirely, or I am just PASSED beyond comprehension before the first lap is up. I’ve tried the S2000, the Nissan Lady, Cobra GT, and various others. I’ve tried it with assists and without assists. My cars are at the “500” tune max for the group. I truly just gave up. I had to, nothing was making sense. Generally, when I game, I can see how I can improve to compete, but this? This just wasn’t making any sense.

For example, I got absolutely screamed by in my Nissan by an S2000. So, naturally, I buy the S2000 the next round, and the guy does the same thing to me.

One thing I do notice is I’m spinning my back tires around a lot of turns and losing speed. I have no assists on even when that’s happening, am I to be braking more upon entry even though I have brake assists on?

HELP

seems as you just need to calm down and maybe get some more practice in.
some of the racers you may end up against can be and will be really quick.
maybe its the tune/car you are using for the specific track, some cars/tunes work really good for a handfull of tracks but can be not so great at others (if your using a grip tune on a speed track or vice versa)
using assist off can make you quicker, but only if you are comfortable with them off.
dont give up.

This isn’t other video games… Its very competitive and there is certainly a substantial learning curve. You may get good at it, but it will not happen within 20 races, that’s for sure. If all you care about is getting Silver or Bronze, then you might get that fairly soon if you’re thrown into a poor lobby. With experienced racers, it most likely won’t happen soon.

You have to put the time in, its that simple. Learn the cars and then learn how to put different tunes on them. Just because you are running the same car as someone else doesn’t mean you will compete with them. Their build/tune could be vastly different. Learn the tracks. Run Rivals. Patience is key, this isn’t Pac-Man.

Are you loading tunes or just autoupgrading?

your just not very helpful

this is what i was thinking. If the OP is auto-upgrading, racing against cars that have proper tunes on, he’s going to have a bad day

Problem 1: lack of skill.

Not to be blunt but getting Bronze is almost equal to having the game start the race and not drive the car at all.

You state you have Brake Assist on? For what? This will slow your car down to a crawl by roughly 1 second PER corner.

There are numerous threads about “how to start FM5 as a beginnner” or “how to improve my skill” on the forums; I would highly suggest reading those first and start getting some Gold medals in career first. Unless you are VERY lucky online, you only have to assume the lobby is filled with people that are equally competitive as Drivatar Difficulty of 20% or more in the Career.

/edit: if you want to try, I think I have a tune online for a Ford Cosworth in C500-class. I run it with my eyes closed using NO ABS, STM, TCS / Normal Steering / Semi-auto shift. It’s a decent car for a beginner but fast enough for almost any track except the 2 F1-tracks. Maybe download the tune and see how it works for you. It should have almost no wheelspin whatsoever.

you say your spinner wheels in corners, maybe try throttle control in corners only half pull trigger. as its always said slow in fast out! there is no need to be full throttle around turns unless you know the car can do it, as said best thing is get some practice in with different tunes and tuners to see which one match how you drive, don’t just set for one that everybody says because you may find its don’t work for you.

you will also find that some people do more tune on power and then put TCS on, so they fast but don’t turn great.

i have a C class Dodge charger thats don’t wheel spin and i also don’t think i have lost a race in it yet, its fast and smooth and i destroyed a S2000 in other nite, and a close race with a B class Pontiac solstice
it works with or without assists

You’re just not very good.

To be fair, I got good at Modern Warfare 1 back in the day because I played so much and really knew the maps and where people would go and could guess what they would do. I didn’t play MW2 as much and when I tried I found I’d just get lit up! I know if I jump online in any shooter I’m going to get lit up because I’m out of practice and don’t know any of the maps.

Forza is like that as well. You have to know the tracks really well and you can really only learn them well from hot lapping or rivals. You also need to learn car control which is much harder than getting used to shooter controls.

I’d recommend turning off brake assist first (it’s way to slow) and trying rivals. You can make money while learning one track at a time as well as learning proper racing lines. Keep standard steering and TCS and ABS to start but then start turning off ABS to start. (I use normal steering and TCS for high powered cars now. I didn’t use to but I’m faster w TCS)

Stick w it! The game is satisfying as you start dropping sec off lap times.

I will use the gamer: Lou3824 as an example. In the first weeks of Forza they were putting in OKish lap times. They had a documented thread of their improvements and each week after many MANY hours they were improving. Now they can run top 100 times. There are 2 things you need to be quick in Forza.

  1. Practice, more practice and tons more practice.
  2. Natural ability

Without these 2 you will always be beaten by someone. Aim for a target and go for it. Once beaten go for the next. DO NOT think that you got beaten by X car that you can jump in one and beat the guy with it. That wont happen overnight.

And please…get rid of that braking assist. You are more or less driving around with the handbrake on!

On average each assist uses time up. I would say these are the following results on a C class car

Auto Braking: 5-8 seconds a lap
ABS: 0.5-2 seconds a lap
Auto Gear: 1-3 seconds a lap
Manual Gear: 0.5 - 1.5 seconds a lap
TCS (Car dependant): 0.5-1 second a lap
STM: 1-2 seconds a lap

Dear OP.

If I was in your shoes and new to FMotorsport I would take a deep breath. No matter what racing games you have been playing there is still a massive amount to learn.

  1. tracks. Don’t be afraid to use the racing line or braking assist. You need all the practise you can get. You can switch it off later when you don’t need it.

  2. Car set up. To race competitively online you need to carefully choose tunes by experts available to download in the upgrade menu . Take time to experiment building your own. Nobody, but nobody, tunes a car quickly. It is a painstaking process. Using the auto upgrade feature is fine for racing offline in career mode.

  3. Driver skill and experience. To start with forget all this switch off all the assists. You aren’t at that level yet. It’s a process we have all been through to some extent or other. Work out what you need help with to get going. Only by doing many many races will you develop and refine your skills. When you have mastered , for example, braking you can switch off the assist to allow your new skill to maximise the potential. Without experience you will be slower without assists.

Like any true skill it’s all about practise practise and then some more practise.

My two cents as I was in the same boat…

First and foremost - get a real tune, dont auto upgrade - EVER. It makes a huge difference.

If you have experience in previous forza turn off as many assists as you can. Turn off auto brake for sure. Leave other stuff on if needed.

Practice laps in appropriate class in rivals to get used to car. Race slowly at first to score clean laps and gradually speed up. As more than one person told me… slow + smooth = FAST

Practice. Practice. Practice. When lou started he sounded like you. Now he’s running on the first page of leader boards. He did it by chasing faster drivers and learning better lines on the track, along with asking for help. Good luck.

Don’t use brake assist at all. Turn that down to ABS until you feel ready to take that off.
Turn the line on to at least the braking line and slow down through the red until it’s yellow. Many, many turns you can take faster and brake deeper but you’ll learn when and where they are and for which of your cars.
TCS would probably help you too.
ABS, TCS and brake line are probably all the assists anyone would ever need and you can click them off and try without when you’re golding all the time. Everything else horribly handicaps your times and is probably causing you to place where you are.
Giving the no-collisions lobby a shot probably couldn’t hurt either. No one can ram you out. You just learn and your mistakes are yours alone.

For those that responded with actual advice thank you.

It sounds like I need to take off brake assist. I’ve dabbled with it - but I end up butt first in the wall half the time - I just need to practice with it.

Yes, I am using just the auto tune. I’m not a real life car buff, so none of it makes THAT much sense. I’ll look up a guide for it.

As I get older and have more expendable money, I tend to waste more on games I don’t play, so my rule has been to get 500 achievement points before buying another game. So I’m shooting for just medals at this stage to get those in multiplayer, ha ha.

If you’re serious about learning the game, there are lots of people here who will gladly help you. I received some great help along the way. I would be one of those willing to help too. However, when you start off by expecting to do better than bronze in multiplayer in your first 20 races, that’s going to steer a lot of people away. Practice and Patience are the two biggest keys. Its a tough game to learn and you have to progress through things.

If you’re running into the walls and such with brake assist off, then you need to work on your driving skills. Set your brakes to ABS and your steering to Normal. Leave the other assists on for the time being. Learn to drive the car without slamming into things with theses two off. Might take you a day, might take you 6 months… Once you can drive without hitting things and can limit your wheelspin, then start removing other assists.

Oh, and don’t use the auto upgrade feature. Just get one of the “Tuned By Worm” tunes for your car. They aren’t the fastest, but they will at least allow you to handle the car much easier. Once you get better, then look for better tunes.

When you are in the car upgrade area hit the little menu button on the left. That will take you were you can get tunes for your car. You can even filter based on track etc etc. Look for worms tunes for great stable tunes. ERS Johnson also has great ones - awesome muscle cars! get his chevelle and you wont go back
Chris

Forgot - one other question.

Is there a “best way” to start off the line?
