Let me preface this by saying that I’ve purchased, and played the hell out of every single Forza game going back to the day one release of the original FM on the first Xbox… and prior to that every single Gran Turismo with a GT 1 purchase on the PS1 when it was released. I could go on but I’d date myself even more than I already have. Let’s just say that I’ve been playing “racing games” since Night Driver on the 2600.
OK, it seems to me that with every iteration of FM, we get better graphics, somewhat better handling (questionable between the last 3 releases as to which game has the best handling, 4 and 6 are great imo) and more cars on track, which I could care less about as anything over 8 becomes demolition derby. Oh yeah about rain and night tracks… meh.
There’s where the good ends and the bad begins. Let’s discuss:
-
Markets for selling cars, liveries, tunes, designs ect.? Major awesome part of FM 4 down the drain. Probably the biggest downside of all.
-
Career. Terrible now. It feels disjointed and badly thrown together, you can’t choose exactly how you want to progress and is all together just bad. FM 4 did career 10 times better than FM 6, why do we get a downgrade?
-
Runaway drivatars. Really? Second place is good enough? No. You need to fix your AI, it SUCKS, terribly. We don’t play for second place and there is NO reason a driver at the front of the pack should blow everyone away on the lowest difficulty. Crap programming NEEDS TO BE FIXED!
4)Fujimi Kaido, one of the most awesome looking fun tracks in FM4, gone. Also, Maple Valley, Camino Viejo, Suzuka, Mugello… Wait… Why did I spend another $100 on this again?
5)Mulitplayer “lobbies” are just horrible. Customization is at a minimum and there aren’t enough Ghost Races. Playing crash up derby with bad kids is no fun and not being able to customize is inexcusable in 2015. Also, multiplayer and Forza Hub are always seeming to go down at the most inopportune times.
- When selecting tunes or paint jobs, you can’t search by highest rated and the info on tunes doesn’t show up after you scroll past the first 20 on the list. WHAT is up with this? Who created the options menu for searching for tunes and paint jobs? Probably the same person who decided to get rid of markets.
I will ad more here as I think of them but you get the point… Aside from graphics, Forza 4 was a MUCH better and complete game than 5 or 6.
Look, for the past 10 years, I have been one of Forza’s biggest “fanboys”. When it came out, I instantly shelved the Gran Turismo series as I loved the handling and the constant, amazing upgrades that each game received. Now, it seems we are going backwards. I can honestly say that I will NOT buy the next FM game until I read reviews for it and see that these things are added back into the game and we get MORE than that on top of it. As a discerning gamer, I feel like I’ve been taken for $100 because I blindly expected Turn 10 to deliver MORE than they have done in the past. What we have gotten here is a game that, on the surface looks and plays good, but when you really dig into the content, you realize you are getting shorted big time. Like going to Subway and getting a loaded sub for 5 bucks and then going back a week later, they raised the price to 7 bucks and you get half the meat, cheese and toppings, but they made the wrapper that it comes in nicer looking.
I even bought the FM 6 Xbox One for the fact that I thought it would blow FM 4 out of the water. I did skip 5 because a friend has it, I played it and saw what a downgrade it was to FM 4. So, to Turn 10, is this your legacy? Are FM 3 and 4 going to be the pinnacle of your gaming output? At this rate it seems the case. Will we get an even more polished FM 7 with even more content cut out of it? I really, really hope not… but, I will now take a long, hard look at the Gran Turismo series for the first time in about a decade when the new one is released on PS4, as I am really starting to fear the worst for this franchise.
