What is the purpose of 10 gear transmission?

I wonder what kind number of gears fits what car as a rule of thumb?

Is more gears for more power?
Is more gears for fastest cars in game?
Is more gears for Offroad?

Think of it as having 10 shorter gears vs 6 longer gears. Having multiple shift points can keep the power band higher for some cars, giving more direct power and a way to shift up and down the power band to keep high RPM’s for cornering.

For instance, your 6SPD drops from 6th to 3rd for a tight turn with an automatic transmission. That 3rd gear could be in a low RPM and causes your engine to struggle slightly while getting back to speed before it shifts into 4th. The 10SPD can drop from 10th to 34rd-4th gear while maintaining a high powerband so that when they decide to power through the rest of the corner the powerband is still there.

Also, with newer technologies, having more gears in the transmission often leads to better fuel mileage which even saving enough fuel for 1 extra lap in a 10SPD vs the 6SPD would be worth it. Obviously in Forza fuel doesn’t really matter, but it does for those who play with full simulation.

Offroad builds. It’s a combination of some offroad builds needing lots of gears so they won’t hit their rev limiters heading downhill, and the fact that diesel engines have a very tight power band. So if you got a big heavy diesel-powered offroader, you want lots of gears in order to prevent the engine from getting swamped on tight turns and obstacles like water splashes, and in your higher gears where the need to stay in the power band is higher. Also having an extra gear or two for those long trips down the side of the Caldera is nice, even if they don’t get used otherwise.

What amount of gears do you suggest for racing in X-Class hyper cars?

Not really. Seeing what a stock engine is as opposed to just being labeled “stock” is on my personal wishlist. Rev limit is a good indication though, a lot of diesels won’t rev past 5k, and sound is another way you can tell. If it sounds like a transport truck, it’s a diesel.

I don’t tune X-class but there are two approaches when it comes to high powered hypercars. The more traditional approach is a 7 speed, with 6 gears set up for tight tracks and then a 7th set up for top speed. This is the ideal approach for cars with smoother power delivery. However, for cars with massive torque spikes, an 8 or 9 speed is ideal. The Konigsegg Jesko uses a system like this stock. The first two or three gears (in the Jesko’s case it’s three) are used to push the engine quickly past the torque spike, while allowing the driver to short shift quickly through the gears to help manage the power going to the drive tires. Continuing to use the Jesko as an example, the third gear then becomes the effective first gear, and the rest of the gearbox is ideally set up like the 7 speed example above. You’re effectively using the third gear as first, the other two first gears are just used to help manage the torque spike at launch whilekeeping the car in boost.

If you’re building to X though I suspect you’re also converting to AWD as well, which makes the first scenario more likely since four tires can handle a lot more torque than two. But if you do find that’s untrue, you can now add more gears for torque and boost management purposes.

To annoy wheel users when they download a tune for something like a Honda Civic and it has 10 gears to manage on every damn corner lol…

It’s ridiculous having 7, 8, 9, 10 speed tranny’s! Well it made it so they could say, we added “X” number of new items to make themselves feel better.

OEM accurate builds when converting to AWD.

Also you can run shorter gearing without sacrificing top speed.

I don’t understand the complaints… Some of the cars in the game have 7+ gears. Its also great for keeping the turbo spooled and in it’s powerband when downshifting.

I’ve used a 10 gear transmission in one of my Lamborghini test tunes and it worked quite well. Instead of shifting down to 3rd.or.4th and being at low RPM, I could shift down to 5th, be right in the middle of the RPM range which meant I had more power instead of waiting like I would in a transmission with less gears.

Obviously it won’t work with every vehicle so those of us who tune will be the ones to test everything and recommend what to use.

^But some of the older cars only have 7(+) gear boxes available. W[Mod edit - WSD - profanity and alluding to profanity is against the ToS] e should get 5 and 6 gear boxes as option. At least for older cars that had such.

Just as an example. The 1991 BMW M3 (E30) only has the default gearbox and the first tuneable option is a 7 gear one. This is utter BS!!! It’s actually the worst crap I saw since quite some time related to car tuning in gaming to be honest. My solution at this point is to simply push the 7th gear out of the “working range” but that presumably only works if you’re driving manual and not for auto.

The 10 gear boxes maybe (just maybe) make sense for something like a Jesko but even there they aren’t really needed.

I’ve the impression that the responsible devs have absolutely no clue what they were doing when introducing that nonsense. Besides that I’ve the impression that they’re all playing with a controller and all available assists turned on. They’ve presumably never touched a wheel and turned the automatic transmission off even once.

No, they are not! At least not racing or other upgrade ones. I already gave the M3 1991 example.

As you can see the first upgrade one is a 7 gear one.

You now may argue that the standard is an adjustable 6 gear one and this is true but look what top speed this one allows…

You need to push out the individual gears. Final drive alone does not determine top speed.

This will come with one of two disadvantages depending on which way you chose. If you’re going to spread them evenly you’ll end up with a slower acceleration and a messed up (not ideal) connection speed (rpms) when changing gears or if you chose to let’s say just spread the 5th and 6th gear a slower acceleration at the high speed range.

Yes, 6 speeds is not ideal for an AWD converted 960pi maxed out monster. That’s real life. There is no magic 6 speed gearbox that’s going to somehow match the 7 speed on your build. That’s why this change is so good. It allows for more flexibility in builds.

8-10 gears mean better retrieval of power, which is especially noticeable in hyper cars at super short acceleration phases, also often means an advantage over the divertars (NPC Cars),

So more gears, for superfast braking and accelerating back out, even at very high speeds where 1/8th or 1/10th gear can make the subtle difference. 1/8 could be too much 1/10 just right ^^

I use FH4 / 5 everything a kind of “carrera race track”, so drive like on rails and use myself only gas and as little as possible the brake!
Well, FH5 is not sim racing and I also drive only against the CLOCK that and TUNING/CAR PAINT/DESIGN is my very big fun in the game ^^
