This is one of those features that I could either get really excited or really angry about.
If they solved the gameplay depth issues of the past two iterations (custom championships, ranked online racing, more involved open world like in 3) then this is something that is really cool and adds a lot to the game, especially with now being able to start an event lab creation from anywhere on the map. Building my own race/test track with multiple event lab configurations in my own backyard is really cool.
Combined with custom championships, I could create my own test suites, helping rapidly draw out issues and refine builds. Add in my own personalized flair to the place, and you’ve got something that I could get really attached to and helps ground my sense of place in this virtual world.
Also let’s not forget that this feature indicates that it is very likely that online open world private sessions are coming back, and that is a very exciting feature, especially for friend groups and clans. Combined with car meets, it also makes establishing a new community that much better.
But if the gameplay depth issues are not resolved, particularly around the core aspects of driving and racing, then I’m going to be resentful of features like this, because this is what they chose to work on instead of dealing with fundamental issues with gameplay and depth.
People need reasons to re-engage with game modes, to keep coming back. With that deep re-engagement, it keeps coming back to the game exciting, and building and sharing stuff like this is exciting. I could genuinely see a situation with the friends I play where one of us builds something that all of us want to keep coming back to as a gathering place or a testing center.
But if the gameplay lacks depth, you get to a point where you’ve tried every game mode 3 times over, and there is no real reason or motivation to re-engage, and it turns stuff like this from something that can potentially become an anchor point in the game world into something that you spend hours building, only for your friends to experience it for 20 minutes and then say “that was neat, but what’s next?”
So I guess that’s my long-winded way of saying that I’m not sure I want to think about that yet.
