What am I doing wrong? I want to be faster

What am I doing wrong? Ive been playing forza since the beginning and I’ll admit this is the first time I’ve wanted to be competitive but I just don’t understand why some of you guys, with the same car, can be 5 seconds a lap faster than me.

Update 2/22/2014:
I’ve figured out what I needed to know. Thank you all for your responses.

Skill, build, tune, and amount of practice will account for those 1-5 seconds. Just keep practicing and working on the build. A build you have at one track may not be fast on another track even tho the same car is the leaderboard car. more often than not you will need to be in that leaderboard car to even stand a chance to getting near their times.

Honestly, don’t know how much better I can get. Like I said, I’ve been playing since Forza 1. The only thing I can think of is the builds, not my tunes, but my actual upgrades and whatnot.

Not saying im fast but what I do is use the open source tunes that people have posted times with. Then you know what the car is capable of. After I use theirs I try and build one that may or may not work better for me
If you can’t match the times then more practice. And I need alot of practice.

Try these tunes out compared to yours and see where you stand. Drive them and then, drive them again. Also, look at the Open Source ones and see what the differences in your tunes and theirs.

This is your first mistake. Don’t back out when someone faster joins…how are you ever going to get faster if you don’t race tougher competition? Also, as meticulously as you may go through your tunes, have you ever compared your tune to someone else’s? A lot of the trick to tuning is getting the right parts on a car. It may not make sense in a real world concept but it may make sense on the game. Don’t give up…keep pushing and look around these parts for tunes that may help you out.

Agree with Clay completely. Now that you can save replays from the multi-player lobbies you race with those guys and save the replays so you can see what they do. Never, never back out from the room with super fast guys come in. They are the best for a reason. Learn from them. Some are quite friendly and if you start asking questions they will give some pointers. Especially about stuff you would never think about.

^^^this. When I first started in Forza 3 I was clueless. I watched a gazillion replays of top times and also would chase the top ghosts, use the rewind feature and keep running sections until I could at least stay fairly close to the top guys. Then go and run times without using rewind. Corner exit will always be where you are slower then those guys…always. As Matt stated, most guys are friendly and enjoy helping others.

Honestly, the people who are consistently running at the top of the leaderboards are gifted. These are people who can drive the very best line and not slow down where most people think its time to brake. They stick to that line and push the car to the very limit when most of us wouldn’t. Most of them put in a lot of time practicing and learning the tracks and the cars. However, there are also some out there who can pick up a controller with little or no practice and run a top ten time. These people I like to call aliens. They are superhuman beings from another planet and they can be found in every aspect of our lives, from golf to brain surgery.
I do believe most people have the capability of running in the top 1%, but the top .1% is an area that will always be reserved for the truly gifted and those seriously committed to practice (lots of practice).

Peace

The thing is with the ONR guys is that they blow my doors off so I cant even see what is they’re doing and then they won’t talk to me when I ask them questions so whats the point?

Im dont mean to blow my own horn but so far, I’ve never downloaded a top tune thats as fast as mine. If you dont believe me, try my b class gt86. Just search my gamer tag.

If someone could join a party with me some time and show me whats up that would be awesome.

Know yourself before you compare yourself to anyone!
By this I mean your style of driving and tuning, NOT other peoples tunes or their driving style! - They may help but in the long term, you will suffer.

Run 50 laps on each course in Time Attack and set a top ten runner as your rival on each. By the time you finish them all you’ll be faster I promise.

You can’t really practise effectively in a lobby because too much can go wrong and ruin your flow. Fine tune your racing line it is worth bags of time. That’s what I’m currently doing now.

P.S. This will feel like hardcore practice but if you’re top 500 then you probably smash most online players anyway. Drop multiplayer lobbies for a while, you can’t get slower and just improve your skill. You’ll come out the end with a much higher level, more badges, money and pure racing skillz!!!

Again, not to blow my own horn, ya I do smash almost everyone online but its those guys that come on every once in a while that blow MY doors off, it just boggles my mind how you can be any faster. And the people who are at the top of the leader boards that are 3 to 4 seconds faster than me, I wanna know how to do that! If I need to practice more ok, if I need to tune my cars better ok, but I need to know. Its driving me crazy! No pun intended.

Don’t dwell just practise bud. You can set you rival and chase each one at a time or something. You probably don’t know the tracks as well as you think if you’re stuck and not improving and your tunes are fast.

I can sympathize with what you’re saying, I’m nearly always faster in my own tunes than with others. I’m also very happy just to get a top 100, which is still seconds away from top 10s. I think it has a lot to do with natural ability, like any other highly competitive skill. Plus the fact that I never held a game controller till I was 32 (Gran Turismo on the Playstation1) might have something to do with it. I think the young guys who grew up doing this probably have some small advantage.

Im gonna try your time trials idea and just practice my butt off. BTW Yay Hamilton, BOO Vettel

I dont want to believe its all just natural skill but you’re probably right. Im glad someone can relate with me though. And can you believe there’s actually kids playing Forza 5 who weren’t even born when Gran Turismo 1 came out.

Matthew, send me a friend request, jump in a lobby with us and we can work through those issues. Hopefully we can help.

I ran a few races the other day and a few of those laps set me inside the top 500 as well one inside the top 300! Truth be told is I should be way further back! I’m in the same spot as you three or more seconds off the pace, do really well in online lobby’s. However some of the other really fast drivers don’t even have an XBox One or Forza 5 yet! I know for myself I have reached the summit, but hopefully you are at the base of it. Practice get better tweak the cars if needed but drop the ego at the door if you wanna get faster! Take the help offered too you step back and see what your faults are and where you can improve! Never ever leave a lobby just because some one is better than you or faster than you! Watch learn hell you have a mic talk to them! They aren’t creeps, just normal people down to earth and some of them are hilarious! Join a league if you have the time and get to know them find what makes the so much faster. Be prepared to loose at first but hopefully you will get better and have some fun in the process!

I dont mean to to sound egotistical, I’m just trying to make it clear that im not trying to go from begginer to pro, I’m trying to go from expert to pro, which again sounds egotistical but you don’t go to the doctor and tell them you’re fine.

If I thought I was so great, I wouldn’t be asking for help. So if anyones willing to party up with me, sen me an invite.

Clay in LA, I sent you a FR.

Everyone has an ego! I do with my buddies because I’m one of the fastest guys on my friends list. However you are asking for help and that is the key. I’m just trying to make a point that you were leaving lobbies when the faster drivers entered so you wouldn’t loose. Ego or self pride was making you leave so you weren’t shown up or having too admit you weren’t the best. I hope you achieve your goal of becoming one of the best I really do, but just remember it’s just a game and have fun.
