Using AI to Assist Blind Drivers to Overtake

Hello

I’ve been racing in Forza Motorsport since the official release, and I’m still loving it. As a blind racer, I absolutely appreciate that Forza Motorsport is fully accessible to me and many of my blind and low vision friends. I’m part of a large blind gaming community, and we actively support any game that offers accessibility features for blind players we always purchase accessible titles to show our appreciation to the developers.

But let me get to the crux of this post.

As blind racers, we rely on various driving assists, and I occasionally race with my wheel as well. However, there are still some limitations that make it difficult for us to participate in public events especially Featured Multiplayer. Yes, I’ll sometimes give it a go, but if I misjudge the distance to another car or their speed, I risk being verbally abused by another driver or even reported as a rammer. That’s a stressful and disheartening experience.

So I’m asking Turn 10: is there a way you could incorporate some of the AI driver behavior into accessibility options?

Here’s an example: when I use a controller, I’ve never been able to fully master steering with the stick. I just can’t keep the engine sound in the right place consistently. On my wheel, I do much better but with a controller, I rely on full steering assist to help keep the car on the racing line. Aside from audio cues, that’s the only assist I use.

What I’d love to see is an AI overtaking assist option. For example, if I’m faster than the car in front and there’s a straight where I can safely pass, it would be amazing if the game could help me initiate and complete that overtake — just like Drivatars do with each other. Right now, if I’m using full steering assist and try to overtake, the system pulls me back toward the racing line, which often causes me to lose control or accidentally hit the car I’m trying to pass.

I hope this suggestion makes sense and that I haven’t overcomplicated it.

Please help, Turn 10. I love this game — truly — but this kind of assist would take Forza Motorsport to the next level for blind players.

I think this is an amazing idea. And like you, I do better on a wheel than controler, but when I do use a controler, I face the same issues as you. That’s why you won’t find me in any featured multiplayer races. Hopefully T10 can add the feature you’re requesting. It really would help.

This assist feature would be amazing to have in the game, not just for multiplayer races, but also in single player with other AI cars on track.
In single player I always tend to race with the collisions turned off, as without not being able to see the car in front, it’s tricky to know how close I am to them. I would like to be able to race with the collisions turned on, and having an overtaking assist would really help to be able to overtake a car what I’m racing with for position without hitting them and getting a penalty for collision.
