Unrealistic Flappy Wipers

A bit of a pet hate from me, and completely turned me away from NFS Shift…

A lot of gameplay vids are surfacing showing relatively normal cars with wipers flapping around…

This is exceedingly unrealistic,
e.g. On board Lap of Le Mans Through the Ages - YouTube Shows some Le Mans cars with amazingly stable wipers, and having driven quite a few cars in my life, if the wipers where moving around as depicted in the game play videos, I’d be taking the car in to get fixed… the only time I’ve had issues with this kind of thing is fitting poor quality aftermarket items…

If people want hyper unrealistic, at least give us the option to turn it off so those of us that want to concentrate on the driving/racing aren’t constantly drawn to the arcade features…

Agreed, I wouldn’t mind a tiny bit of wiper flapping if I were driving an older race car over a bumpy surface, but how it looks so far in videos i’ve seen looks way too overdone.

I also hope the flapping and moving parts are in response to the bumps on the road, and not just randomized with increased severity as you go faster and faster. If it were the latter, that would ruin the immersion

I am in agreement here with you. I can understand if they start shaking around at 80 MPH. But wipers shaking at 30MPH is taking it a little far. But, it may not be a noticeable when playing and not watching. Still. I’m not a fan of them shaking at such low speeds.

At least I’m not the only one!

I’mall for ‘options’, some people may love the effect, but I just find it distracting in my field of view, as well as grating with me for being overtly unrealistic.

The next step up in terms of unrealistic is having wing mirrors moving around and then blurring your vision above 60 MPH, something I believe NFS Shift had to patch in the end as too many people couldn’t stomach it.

This is where I think T10 need to elevate themselves by adding little flourishes, but always having the option to disable it, thus everyone can be happy…

It’s slightly overdone unfortunately… it’s a brilliant effect mind you but one that should be toned down at low speeds. Even at 100mph I’ve never seen a wiper flap around like that. Going over bumps yeah that’s understandable and if it’s ridiculously windy yeah I guess but I think that unless you hit 150mph or go over a seriously bumpy part of the track then it shouldn’t happen. Old cars should be the only exception.

It could be just for the demo, the full game will probably receive an update to be more realistic.

And maybe its a real effect in a real race car, they are all about weight saving so the wipers may not be spring loaded, lets see if any real racers can answer.

I seem to remember seeing a Forza 7 video of a standard, ie. non-race car Porsche exhibiting the issue.

Anyone who has driven a real car knows that wipers don’t behave like that, and as said, if they did, we’d be seeking to get it fixed.

I was talking about a real RACE car,of course regular real cars do not do it and this was a race car in the video.

Here it is - the wipers flapping around like crazy even at 45 mph.

The OP has a video of a real race car where the wipers aren’t flapping.

You’re on the money there buddy - never in my life have I ever seen race cars or even rally cars with wipers flapping about. I’ve never seen it happen IRL (some of my mates drive really fast cars), neither have I seen it in a race on TV from the driver’s perspective or any sim for that matter.

This absolutely has to go and it disturbs me a little as the game might… just might… be headed in an arcade direction. I remember Shift 2 had flappy side view mirrors and I absolutely hated it. It doesn’t improve immersion, but rather just comes off as goofy.

Watch Le Mans this coming weekend, you’ll see the wipers buzzing and “flapping” while they are cranking down the Mulsaane.

Okay, so does this happen on specific cars only, such as LeMans prototypes? And, was it right at the beginning of a race or after a couple of laps? Curious now. To date, I’ve never seen this happening on road or race cars.

They move a little, a very small amount. Mostly from the bumps, that straight isn’t extremely smooth. The cars are also going 200mph. Not 40.

Please, just remove this unneeded unrealistic “feature”, it’s just stupid and looks like a joke. At least make it optional. Just don’t ruin cockpit view with things like this. Side mirrors and wipers doesn’t shake like that, simple as that.

I want them to keep the effect, removing it is a complete waste of time and development that they put in But it needs to be toned down. Make them shake over 150 mph or so or on a really really bumpy road.

Having them react only to the surface of the road would be a much better solution, plus it would show off the accuracy of the track surface scan instead of something that looks like it has been set to just be a gimmick and of no real immersion value to the game.

Won’t be fixed/altered though.
It’s funny because wipers are designed to be aerodynamic so they don’t move at low speed.
They never fixed the FOV or paddle shift animation from F6.
I mean look at this. I’m fairly certain drivers don’t ride gangster and let go of the wheel to shift during a race.

Edit: just realized that this video is the same car they are showing at E3. Apparently they put a CVT in this Nismo
- YouTube!

Copied this from my thread on FOV slider. Just to show that they most likely will not fix/change the wipers flopping around.

Are you talking about the exaggerated paddle animation from 6? I’m sure it’s just not added into the game yet, or they just didn’t think to add it. Probably an oversight they will correct.
