As far as I am aware, outside of multiplayer, I can only have increased tire wear in Free play, is that correct? At least I couldn’t and haven’t been able to find a way to apply it in Career mode.
Is it possible, and if so, how?
If it’s not possible, why? Was this an oversight?

No, sadly they have not included the tyre wear multiplier as an option in career mode. Hopefully it will come at some point (together with the option to extend the races).

oK, thought as much. What a shame… and what a waste of potential.
As you say, let’s hope they can change this in the future and indeed include an ability to change the number of laps would also be nice.

They go overboard with this tire wear stuff… if you watch days of thunder Harry hog says to Cole trickle on the radio you been out there for 68 laps Cole everyone has to pit… a these multiplayer races can’t even go around full track Nürburgring more than a couple laps is crazy. Yea I know circle track and road course is different but still it’s a bit excessive if you ask me. I don’t even like doing online anymore unless it’s private multiplayer. Anyone else think so? If the tire wear wasn’t so excessive I’d be Inclined to do more races online.
It would be better if MP races were longer. It seems pointless for short races. I guess it’s just to make sport tires more competitive vs race.
If you could just run softs at 90%+ the whole race the. Sport tires would be even worse.

Anyone know the wear rate of a multiplayer race? It would help in offline practice and vehicle preparation.

I just saw an old tire wear issue pop up where Max asked the question of the forums "how long would you (meaning us the users) want the tires to last. I mean seriously? They’re the game developers and they don’t even know how long race tires should last? Something is seriously wrong back at headquarters people!
And then he asks for which track? WHICH TRACK? how about all tracks and all modes of play as well.
Find out a reasonable mileage expectation from race experience by getting a “Qualified” racing professional on the team as a consultant and maybe even a couple of automotive industrie professionals. Then just make a general mileage wear limit. Give us some kind of silly wear multiplier because you make the stupid races so short we have to have one. And we’re good to go.
But for the sake of the game and for all of us who would love to really enjoy the game, please learn more about racing. PLEASE!

It probably fluctuates. Ive been doing 30 lap races with the forza gt class ive been using x3 tire wear and the mediums last for around 12ish laps around daytona before they turn red, softs were around 8 laps. So multiplayer might be x5 or x6 in a medium length race.
The Goodyear radials used in the Daytona 500 have to last approximately 25 laps. Given that teams are allowed 8 sets of tires (you do the math, I did). That should vary accordingly for other cars depending on weight and tracks. Road courses perhaps reducing tire life by a certain percentage. But for sake of the game, given the shortness of the races, a tire wear multiplier is definitely needed to balance the game against reality.
I think 12 laps on medium tires is a fair starting point for normal in-game tire wear. At 3x wear your laps should be a bit lower.
But this only happens if T10 actually studies the actual racing action and applies it affectively to the game. Which I don’t believe anyone at T10 has made any attempts to do.
Different disciplines use different tires so itd be hard to choose. I think the multiplier is fine but it would be nice if they added an estimated wear graphic like they do with fuel usage. It would take out the tests that would need to be done, but then again by the time they added something like this everyone would probably know already.
For a 30 lap race x3 ends up being a 2 stopper for M-M-S, which would probably be a 1 stop with H-M. I think it works well for that division, i havent tried any others yet.
All they need to do is establish one given baseline and work from there. It could be F1 or IMSA or Indy. But a 3x tire wear going 12 laps is probably not relating well between reality and scaling down to the game. Maybe a 1x tire wear going 12 laps is closer. Especially with the majority of the career and feature races being between 3 to 6 laps.
Im not sure theyre going to be too interested in changing tire wear for career. 99% of career is racing street cars that more times than not start with street tires, tire wear really isnt a thing with non-slick tires.
I also dont understand this thread in a way because besides the road car thing, the races are all too short for tire wear to be a thing. Even if they added a race length option how many laps would the longest race be, maybe 16 laps at some small track. A track like spa might only be 6-8 laps, would it really add much to the experience to have to pit for tires.
I only watch f1 so im not too knowledgeable about what kimds of tires other types of racing use and if they even use soft, medium and hards. But in f1 depending on the track softs usually run upwards of 15-20 laps, mediums 30ish and hards 40ish. These tires are also being pushed to the brink of grip levels that most other racing disciplines cant touch. Going by f1 numbers x1 tire wear is pretty close.
Yeah but for 30 (mediums) laps on a road course that might be 1.75 miles that’s really comparable to the NASCAR tire figures in miles driven. And I think a 3500 or so pounds car going close to 200mph on a high banked oval like Daytona is pushing those tires to their own brink of grip. There’s no need to beleaguer this argument, since the numbers you posted did in fact prove my first post as being spot on correct. So now, instead of us continuing a back-and-forth over basically the same ideal. We should direct our energies towards T10 to affect changes therein.
