The bad bad state of Forza Motorsport (8)

Hello ,

first little introduction. very loyal forza costumer here ,been playing forza for over 16 years (since forza motorsport 2) and bought every motorsport and horizon since fm2 . bought seasonpasses on fm3,4,6 so so spend quite a bit of money on the game. i loved fm2 ,3 ,4, 6 and hated fm7 with a passion bad physics (to much grip to easy , and 90% car 10% skill driver).

now we come to the new forza motorsport (8) subject. i love the new physics its much harder so the driver makes the difference agian wich i like. so thats a step in the right direction agian (physics wise)

now the bad and unacceptabel points (negative)

point 1.
-most of all the shifting , its unacceptabel . never had a race game ( i play alot of them over the years) wich such bad shifting physics. its so bad that i almost wanted to quite playing the game after 2 hours, so annoyed i was with the atrocious shifting. i even played fm7 with less hate by the beginning ( i played it for 3 months) .

why have this system ? its a simcade !! we had a normal shift system since fm3 (with clutch) and only like 5-8 % complained about the full throttle shift (since fm6-fm7) games like gran turismo just have normal shifting and you can full throttle shift since gt3 . the shifting (with clutch) takes me more concentration than the actual driving. sometimes i dont even dare to shift, so i set it on manual (without clutch) but its so slowww. so i dont even want to drive non race box cars anymore wich is crazy… so i only leveled 1 car and dont dare to drive another cause i get so frustrated with the shifting . and why? if you want to be more sim why has a porsche PDK a clutch ? assetto corsa all automatics you didnt needed to shift. (with clutch) and if you want to be more sim ,why is the animation still stick if you have a sequantial racebox installed? and why do you need to use clutch on upshifts on a sport gearbox (dogbox ) ? its got straight cut gears ( you hear the whine) so little lift throttle( 20-30% ) u should be able to shift up and only use clutch down the gears . (look at old V8 supercar footage) now i have possilbe solutions here:

-remove the system and go back to how it was (like fm3,4,5,6,7)
-make a stock gearbox shift like the old system . so not lift throttle, clutch ,wait , shift , clutch , wait , gas ,but like fm3,4,5,6,7 but then maybe that you need to go of gas for 30% to shift(so no full throttle shift) a sportgearbox should behave like a dogbox so upshift no clutch only little lift 30% and downshifts u need clutch. and racebox you can full throttle shift but the car has an ignition cut and you dont need a clutch at all (like reallife race cars F2 for example)

point 2

  • the formula mazda is to OVERPOWERED in A class. its like 2 seconds anything else on tracks like maple valley ,catalunya , mugello. i know since the excistence of race games there is always gonna be 1 or 2 cars overpowered but this is just a joke . i just skip tracks like maple valley cause its boring with all these tryhards in there mazda formulas. i play since fm2 and know that fm3 had the audi S5 , murcielago lp640 ,viper 03 (A class) wich were quite OP and that 80-90% lobby where in audi S5 but still they where beatable with good driving in a non S5. it was because the S5 was overall strong but didnt excell in anything (5.8 handling heavy) , then i know fm6 had the alfa romeo 33 stradale (A class) but that wasnt easy to ride to go fast and on bigger tracks like catalunya there where cars wich came close to the times of it (S2000 ,22b for example) now we land in fm (8) the formula mazda is the fastest on a track like mugello how? its got very long straights . if i look at the handling that thing got it shouldnt be able to go so fast on a big track like mugello. i can compare it to the ktm xbow on fm6 same handling as the mazda (6,7 -6,8) but that was only fast on very small track called catalunya school and bernese alps school circuit , all others it would drown between all other cars on the track cause its 2 slow on the straights. so know it looks like handling is 10 times more important than speeds on the straight . in real life this shouldnt be possible 2 , a porsche gt3 with 450hp or a formula mazda with what ? 200hp on a track like mugello the porsche would win cause of the long straights.
maybe its not only the mazda formula wich just to OP but this just caught my attention.
to solve this problem i have these ideas :

  • make the PI (performance index ) higher like 20-30-40 points .

  • remove the adding weight option , i explain … in fm6 you only could get the furmula mazda in A class by adding drag slicks , what they now do to hold the race slicks is add weight to lower PI

  • ban the mazda formula from lobbies, sounds harsh but been long enough forza player to know you guys did this before. examples : fm3 hot wheels boneshaker (dlc) cause people used it for ramming , fm6 range rover sport (dlc ) cadilliac limo (dlc ), mercdes tankpool truck (dlc) jeep trackhawk etc but not the land rover defender strange right ? i paid for ths cars but couldnt use them online ,sad.

  • the hard option , change phyiscs that handling is less important like fm6

these where my points .

the game is still young so you can now still change these things for the better. if the game stays like this (especialy the shifting ) than i am not gonna buy the season pass wich i was planning to do , cause whats the point of driving new dlc cars if they all shift horrible and or they are nothing compared to some OP tracktoy (mazda formula) on track.
and if it stays like this the game is gonna die pretty soon mark my words, fm7 to died pretty soon . lots off diehard forza fans i know already dont play it that much, but when fm6 was still online everyday they where online. its only like 5-8% wich complained about the shifting , and you gonna punish 90% for that ? the forza needs to be sim screamers are only like 10-15% . there are already more than 100 sim titles but almost none simcade ( its a dying breed) you guys need to understand that you have pure gold in your hands (being still simcade) all games like assetto corsa, .rfactor ,iracing , raceroom, dirt rally all are sims , wich simcades we have? wreckfest(better phyiscs than people think) ? and u guys . please dont destroy the game i loved for 16 years. i went from gran turismo 3-4 to fm2 and never looked back please let it stay like this , and fix the isseus with the game.

kind regards loyal forza player,

Marco

Nah, don’t remove the Ballast option. It’s great for evening out the weight distribution on cars.

thats true i used it for my 997 gt3 :joy: but the problem is like i said tracktoys wich werent be able to go to A class without dragslicks are now and are OP.

Read your text…

So it’s A

Yeah even AI is cheating was doing quick race and AI had 2 cars 11 higher class and 11 copy of my car. Useless atm

About your shifting problems… power shifting on a stock gearbox is just not possible im real life, only with fuel cut off. Ofcourse you have to lift the throttle but i think the system needs a bit of tweeking. I don’t understand your problems with the upgradeable racetransmission. Ot just works like a dogbox, no lifting just shifting. Also yes it has a clutch but you only need it to start.

if you read it carefully you see that i state : the sport gearbox = dogbox (you hear the whine) you should be able to no clutch shift with little throttle lift. and only use down (like V8 supercars) racebox is full sequential and you should be able to full throttle shift (with ignition cut) or without 20% throttle lift. further me problem is that fm3-7 always had the previous system and it worked fine offcourse full throttle shift isnt realistic but forza is not a sim either. gran turismo you can 2 full throttle shift since gt3 or earlier . but then like 5-8 % started complaining since fm6-7 that full throttle shift is horrible and now 90% needs to suffer with this system. further i dont full throttle shift ( never did) but now i need to release the gas clutch shift wait clutch wait gas its almost like a game on its self. ridiculous

Well, in the tuning menu it says the racing transmission is a dogbox and the sport is no?! I have to double check.

i didnt look at stats ,but listened to the gearbox whine/sound … staight cut gears make whining noise wich you hear with a sport gearbox option fitted. youre not gonna fit straight cut gears and use a clutch … no one it the world did this. so why they use straight cut gears is to make a dogbox . look at old v8 supercar videos to see how it works

a motorcycle has no torq hence it doesnt need to declutch. but i am here not for a history in mechanics ( i am a mechanic myself) but dont work on race cars. i just sted to the guy that if you apply a sport gearbox you hear a whine (straight teeth) you not gonna upgrade you gears to straight cut to still usde the clutch all the time… sport gearbox should work like V8 supercar box (wich is a dogbox) and only user little lift off throttle to shift and only use clutch down.

i wouldnt help u anyway , people like u send to the door . than i rather have no work then people who think they know everything better but in the meantime they know nothing.

but all fun and games , its about A GAME

Hey, I am resurrecting this thread, sorry cough, bump

…Do you mean the same need for a delay between operations that you need to make when driving an old rally car with gated manual shifter / clutch in Dirt Rally 2? It feels unrealistically harsh with gears not going in if you are too fast between operations. But also - of course I never drove a real rally car, my god I would part with my little finger if I was offered it…

I am neither mechanic or pro driver, I have just been driving cars since 1995 daily, mainly during work shifts (service tech). And some 3-4000 hrs of simulation (assetto, acc, AM2, raceroom and DR2)

But as a friend of a motor journalist and being a cars / racing fan since the 1970’s, I have driven several manual sports cars with very unforgiving shifting -Like Audi RS2 (tuned), Audi R8 v10, Corvette’s and the Ford GT to name a few. If you get it wrong with clutch release on the lower gears, the whole chassis jerks. You have to give the right amount of gas at the right point of clutch releasing so they “meet”
Not even the real driving sims replicate that, so that an (to me at least) very arcade style racing game (still a lot of fun but hardly a real world simulation) can muck it up so bad is downright weird. Could be a bug, I cant even use my simrig to drive FM on stock settings. Uninstalled it after trying to get a decent FFB for 3-4 hrs

Oh, it’s you again.

Skimmed it, but the 3 ideas I saw were awful.

Manual+clutch gave controller users an advantage over wheel users that don’t have an H pattern. The new system isn’t perfect, but it addresses that problem.

The new meta with handling being more important is good for racing. Can’t hang? Get good.

Ballast is something anyone who runs custom series has been asking for. It’s inclusion is one of the best things about this game as BoP is much easier now.

I expect some vitriol from you, considering your demeanor in our last interaction. So this should be fun.

Simple solution to tracktoys lowered in A class with ballast: you can use lower tier car upgraded but you can’t use cars who have been tier down using ballast.

I am sick of alot of the bugs that come with this game on top of the gear shifts, swell as the penalty system… i am the cleanest driver there could be…ill hold of if i bump you by accident and apologise but when its their fault i get penalised and then loose rank. Ive been an S class 4 500 player since the start. But wny am i on lobbies with rank D rammers?? The AI literally sucks… dont start me on multiplayer… the formula 1 is also to OP… aswell as the X class (some cars that you need to buy DLC) give noone else a chance and they slow down just to f with you…

Im sick of it…and i play hard and have been a customer with forza since fm2. Same as the O. P … just disgusts me…and the featured multiplayer options literally suck right now… go back to FM5/6 physics…way better

Part of the problem is ballast just isn’t as detrimental as it should be. When ballast is used IRL, it’s used as a form of balancing (punishment in some cases).

As it sits now, you could add max ballast and tuners would just work around it and the car would still run a time comparable to without ballast.

Yep it’s a very bad implementation with FM: good tuner will alway find a solution this way and we keep dealing with open wheels car, track toy and OP cars in general running in lower classes and ruining the fun and the will of trying new cars and new tune. Just Imho R, P and X car could not be allowed to be downgrade and open wheels car should run their lobbies. I hope T10 will find the best way to give players the best scenario in every classes with a good choice of competitive cars to pick up. Cars category lobbies would be another way to avoid unfair duels. As for now I’m quite happy with the last hotfix: I got no more shuttering even in the dam Suzuka and Nurburing circuit.

Agreed. But that seems to have always been the case in FM. Half measures when it comes to changes in the physics. An open wheel car is engineered to be compact (for obvious reasons). You can’t just add weight “anywhere” on the car, there is only so much space. Adding ballast should in fact make the car unbalanced on the track.

But like with most of the upgrades, they affect the car in magical ways that can’t be explained. Like how improving your valve train doesn’t produce more available RPM, which in reality is one of the main reasons you improve your valve train…Or why we even have a redline at all considering there is no programmed valve float and the physics completely ignore where said redline is most of the time.

Ah, news to me! So, race transmissions (aka dogbox) require no clutch between shifts once you start rolling? You can slam it forward or backward during acceleration/braking?

Brilliant! I think that’s the only way in Forza to reduce shift times, the clutch, flywheel and driveline upgrades seem to make no difference, even upgrading to Sport trans makes on difference in shift times. Odd.

Are you a controller player?
