Textures for Vinyls

I am really hoping that this time we will be able to choose different finishes for our vinyls in the paint booth. I’d love to put gloss or metallic vinyls on a matte paint job, or use matte stripes on a gloss finish. The article on [Mod edit - WSD - Please do not post links or references to groups who make “how to glitch and cheat” videos] ) mentions new material types being available, so I’m really hoping this will also incudes our choices for vinyl. It would make it a lot more immersive for people wanting to do classic, kustom, and muscle painting especially.

IBT “Please use the features wishlist thread”:

I highly doubt it. Maybe the switch to more powerful processing power will allow it for the XB1X version, but even then, I highly doubt this will change.

Because, you know, the paint shop has been fine since FM3; there’s no need to add any features, right? #eyeroll

Given how the livery editor in Forza titles works, I doubt you will see alternate vinyl finishes anytime soon.

To elaborate:

  • When you create a design, you are compiling various elements on top of each other. These are rendered in a scaleable (vector) format for ease of use.
  • When the livery is applied to a car, your elements are flattened into a single image (.PNG) and placed on the car.
  • This flat image can only have one kind of finish, whatever level of gloss your “base paint” is (Matte, Gloss, Semi-Gloss etc.) for that piece of the car.
  • The reason for all of this is to keep the file size down to a minimum, so that loading times are not affected. This is especially important in Multiplayer as long loading times increase the chances of a lobby becoming unstable.

Other games (such as DiRT 4 and Gran Turismo Sport) use a different method to apply custom liveries to cars. The creative potential of those games’ editors is limited, but the tradeoff is that they have enough bandwidth to allow for higher quality logos to be displayed from greater distances.

Possible correction here, PJT. I doubt that PNG images are used when placing liveries and vinyls on the cars in game. I’ve used several 3D modeling programs when modding for video games (Skyrim, Fallout) and creating 3D models and textures and have not seen anywhere where PNG files were used. Obviously, we don’t have access and tools to mod Forza games, so I don’t know for sure what types of files are used … but I doubt it would be PNG files.
The PNG format was designed primarily for use on the internet … not necessarily in video game image rendering where different image attributes are necessary for efficient use and image quality and other file formats and programs will likely work much better.

.PNG was a guess based on the fact that the final image has an alpha channel and the entire design appears to be bitmapped.

Regardless, I still believe the final design outside of the editor is a flattened image.
