Station Wagon discussion

Hey Guys,

So the other day I grabbed the Audi station wagon from the newest DLC pack and decided to take it for a spin. On freeplay, I set it to unbeatable, no assists, something like 5 or 6 laps, and came in first more or less without too much competition… I’m an ok driver but not really anything to write home about and I play pretty much just casually. The car has basically no upgrades aside from race tires and race breaks, maybe springs too, and I didn’t tune it at all… So what’s clear to me is that it wasn’t some remarkable driving ability that won the race, but rather the sheer ability of this vehicle. What I found strange though was the cars that this wagon was beating… I mean cars like Alfa 8C, ford GT40, I mean like legitimate sports cars. So my question is: is there any scenario in real life where a station wagon hops onto a track and out performs sports cars like this? Or how realistic do you think Forza 5 is in this regard? Sometimes when look at the results of certain races, I can’t help thinking that that outcome would be totally impossible in real life, especially when I’m driving cars that are in their stock form… but on the other hand I’m not really so informed about motorsport in general, so maybe it’s actually possible? For me, this question isn’t so much about driving capability, but rather the if the engineering of the vehicles makes them actually competitive in real life. What do you guys think?

station wagons were the suvs before there were suvs. they put big motors in them so they could run wheen fully loaded and put luggage racks on top adding more weight and air resistance. empty they had a good power to weight ratio so they were kind of over powered. they were uncool muscle cars. and alot of the turns on a race track are like turns on a public freeway, they can be taken at higher speed than a normal turn can be taken at.

Yes, if you talk about purely road cars, you have Caddy CTS-V, Audi RS6, BMW M5, Merc E63 etcetc, They are high powered Station Wagons and yes they outperform certain purebreed sportscars, but in Forza cars are divided into classes and should be equally fast when tuned in the perfect forza world.

If you talking racing, so yes Volvo raced with pretty good results back in BTCC 1990s, with the 855 station wagon.

It will erase any preconceived notions one may have about station wagons.

Funny how you find drag racing a good comparison for OP question. I think he meant around a track with corners LOL. I’d be willing to bet that Porsche TT would stomp that Hennesy Cadillac around Nuremberg.

Very cool, but they had to switch to the sedan to actually start winning something. Aero issues were the culprit.

I got the new Audi tuned (my tune) for R class and to my surprise that it does well giving the lack of handling…usually 4th or 5th and sometimes a little better depending on the track…best part about it is thanks to paint by the forza community it looks freakimg awesome!!

“Sports Car” and “Station Wagon” are NOT mutually exclusive terms. GM even made a Chevelle Wagon back in the day. Not many were sold, they’re worth a bloody fortune today. Fast as hell too.

Chevrolet sold close to 200,000 Chevelle wagons from 1964-72, all of them ordinary family cars.
The SS package was finally made available on wagons after the 1973 model change, but by then the muscle car era was over, and it was dropped after one year. That’s the only Chevelle wagon that’s even mildly collectible.

If you care to read up on the RS2 you will find there are very good reasons why it will trounce some serious metal. If I recall correctly the car was effectively hand built for Audi by Porsche . The car runs many porsche parts underneath. The brake calipers even bore the Porsche logo. I think if you look the wheels are actually a Porsche design. The real thing is devastatingly quick. I drove one a long time ago. My legs were shaking when I got out… And for mere mortals there was the Volvo 850R.

I love the station wagons in Forza and I hope they read this and keep them coming! Merc and BMW both make great wagons and I’ll never own them in real life, but I’d love to drive them in forza. As well as the Dodge Magnum, the Volvo 850R! All great cars!

Plus they drift like champs.

I’d love to see the CTS-V Wagon and Vauxhall VXR8 Wagon for this game to see the battle of the two.

The 850R was great, I had one as my second car. It was front wheel drive though. Great in a straight line, not too good in the turns or in snow.

But my 98 V70R is one I will keep until the wheels fall off. The body is nearly identical to the 850, it was the first year with a new model name. It’s AWD and just a joy to drive to this day with 166 thousand miles on it. It is simply the greatest estate car Volvo ever made. (The real Swedish owned Volvo…before they were sold.)

The best part? You can load your dog and the groceries in the back and still give it to a BMW 3 series off the line at a red light. Up to the speed limit, of course. (Ha)

Fast wagons were never really “hot” in USA, But in Europe they were much more common, and Japan had few of them too
Mercedes had “Hammer” wagon back in the day, Audi had RS 2 and later came RS4 and 6. BMW has it’s power wagons, not to forget Volvo 850R, and Opel which had Omega 3000.
Mitsubushi has Legnum (Galant wagon) although that wasn’t actually huge success.

America has finally it’s first success with CTS-V, Chrysler tried it with 300C SRT8 wagon, which didn’t sell, Chevy had consepts of Camaro Wagon back in late 60’s which never made to production, and would have competed with Chevy Vega if it would have been launched.

Americans never really gave a good chance for wagons. I have assumption why this happened.
THIS IS JUST MY ASSUMPTION

Not many European family’s can afford 2 cars, Therefore they have rounded it up in cars which you can use for going a week long trip with family, tow a trailer, and get on track.

While in America, if you tow something you get a truck, if you race you get sportscar, and if you want to go for a roadtrip with family, you get wagon (or SUV these days)
Or if you can’t afford all three, you just drop something out of the mix.

It’s a shame wagons aren’t more popular here in the states. The 2005+ Subaru Legacy GT wagons (especially with the manual) are unicorn cars, people love them, but they were a dying breed.

I’d much rather have a wagon than an SUV.

I feel the same why about my BMW. I think I’ve seen 1 or 2 e34 tourings like mine in the past 5 years. It’s almost impossible to find them as a manual that wasn’t done as a conversion too. At least it stands out more than the normal cars.
