Im sorry but who ever decided that the rain thats in Forza 6 is good, needs to relook at what they have done. If there was that much water on a race track they would call the race off.
Having to do a whole career phase where every race is wet is just not enjoyable, actually the whole rain thing in F6 is just not enjoyable, it seriously needs to be reworked.
I think the rain physics are fantastic. Aquaplaning feels very much like it does in an actual car. Roads are slick and tricky and definitely require extra finesse and strategy. Drivatars react realistically to water and it’s fun to see the computer have the same difficulties with the puddles as I do. Really helps the immersion and realism.
I think rain races are unrealistic, but very fun. Yes, no league would EVER run a race with deep puddles like that, but part of the fun of Forza is that it does tend to exaggerate some things for the sake of variety and enjoyment. “A good story doesn’t get ruined with truth.” Same applies here. As noted above, the rain presents a whole new set of challenges that a realistic wet race wouldn’t really provide.
I think the rain effects are cool, but not very good. Horizon 2 had much better-looking rain (but the rain physics were pretty blah). It’s very apparent on large areas (like the windshield, hood, and doors) that the rain texture is a simple tile and it’s bad. The raindrops are also just a texture map overlayed on the models, so up-close pictures show that the raindrops wrap around the edges of the model instead of forming little droplets on the surface of the car. Horizon avoided this by reducing how much water collected on the surface of the car, but at least it wasn’t so obviously fake.
So far, my experiences haven’t been matching yours. In my races, I’ve had the occasional moment when AI spins or slides off, but generally they act unaffected by the rain and don’t seem to change their lines all that much, if at all. I swear they’ve blew right through places where, had I don’t the same, my car would’ve pulled heavily to one side and slid off into a wall. I’d like to see more weaving to avoid puddles, more spinning out or sliding off when hitting puddles, more easing off the throttle when driving through deeper water, et cetera from the Drivatars.
Yeah another one for the AI driving through puddles like they’re not there. I often see them drive 2 wheels in 2 out which if I even just clip the edge I’m pulled into the wall.
I’ve seen the same thing especially brands hatch where they seem to dive bomb the corners with the biggest puddles and don’t react at all to them. It’s still early, maybe they have to use dry drivatar data until enough people sync their data on rain tracks.
It takes a lot of gpu horsepower to properly do liquids. And that would not even include the physics involved. The effect looks good enough for a console game. High end gaming rig with multiple graphics cards and a ton of graphics memory not so much.
True, but the tiling is really bad on every car. All it would have taken is a few different rain tiles and organize them so it looks a little more random. This a concept from 8/16-bit era games, no game in 2015 should have texture tiling that is that obvious. It’s very very bad.
LOL as someone who works in graphics and works very hard to always get rid of pattern tiling, I have to laugh that you actually noticed that. Now I won’t un see it. Thanks bud.
BTW this is, for me not a bad slate on the rain, it’s fun, but it’s not fun to have to do a race (ahem Brands Hatch career) 20 times before finally getting 3rd and moving on. Oh how good that sun looked after that race.
I vote for option to skip rainy races, or have an option to do dry, because they are not really fun, they feel like a chore. Some of it has to do with the very unpredictable AI in the rain. You have to run a perfect race, but you also have to deal with their braking and turning habits, without hitting them. You can’t just curl around because the grip levels are way too low to maneuver.
All in all, I can accept it, I don’t accept being forced to do it.
I have to disagree, I find the wet races to be incredibly fun. Slipping and sliding all over the track, trying desperately to not completely lose control when you hit a puddle, it adds a whole new element of fun to the game for me.
I’d rather race in dry - no doubt - But I’ve adapted to wet -and don’t mind the challenges - Bugatti race in GT car was killing me until I tuned in more grip and stopped getting terribly upset on the curbing.
I think its really helping my throttle control. - Definitely need to be more patient while racing - know where the puddles are and have a race line down to be successful.
The AI will go all over the place so no need to press the issue and if you are do it on the inside so they slide out and away from you - doing the bump and run in turn helps if you run out of patience - tap and unsettle car in front of you so you can then hit apex and go (used at Leguna Seca infamously at the last turn - and I mean TAP not hit them (a controlled deliberate action)
Yes, in Formula 1, anyway. In fact, sometimes, if a driver has put on the full wet tires, when the intermediate tires were the better choice, they will intentionally look for standing water to drive through, to keep the tires cool.
Petit LeMans will probably demonstrate this real well this week.
Please note Turn 5 (stream across the road) and 10a/b puddles, T1 will have an issue as well.
Watkins Glen - you pretty much avoid all the apex and stay off the concrete / finished sections to maintain grip in the rain.
The Silverstone starting line is a bit crazy on FM6 - wonder if that is like that in real life or exaggerated a bit.
I don’t have the game, but seeing the commercial about the rain makes me cringe when I see the splashing the cars cause as they drive. And sadly, now that it’s been televised, I doubt they’d fix it.
