Racing in the rain. Why so extreme?

The feel and look of the wet racing is very good, but has anyone on the Turn10 team raced in the wet or even been at a track to watch a race meeting in wet weather?

I know Forza is not a simulation but the ridiculous lakes of water going across the track that make the car aqua plane are way beyond racing conditions that any real race driver finds on a track. The race would have been red flagged way before the puddles were that bad, because guess what, they randomly fire you off into the barriers or other cars. The puddle effects are good but they belong on a rally stage. All it does is narrow the line we have to take on the track after you have memorized the locations.

I raced in real life back in the 1990s at places like Silverstone and actually won a mini race in the wet. Those conditions were bad but nothing close to the conditions in this game.
On another occasion my father was racing at Silverstone and the race was abandoned due to Forza 6 style puddles on the track that would not go away.

Could the puddles be reduced or just have them at the edges of track or restrict the extreme or monsoon wet to just a few tracks.Racing in the rain is supposed to be challenging and enjoyable, not a chance to wear out the rewind button.

I think it would be kind of nice to have a puddles option for rain based races, those that like it can keep it, those that don’t care for it could just check a box and not have to deal with them.

this is laughable. with the inclusion of the puddles the racing line changes, if anything this would cause more problems with 2 groups of people trying to go round corners with different braking points and entering and exiting differently.

for the most part you can go round most the puddles, and the ones you cant just limit the amount of braking/accelerating/turning while going through them.

racing in the rain isn’t as hard as long as you don’t follow the guided race line.

I love the wet tracks. Remind me of racing MX in the rain minus the mud in ur eyes.

I agree, like I mentioned the actual effect the puddles have is a very realistic feel and in the right environment like MX,rallying or rallycross would be awesome. To me they just don’t belong on Forza 6 in every single wet race.It reminds me more of Mario Kart when the banana is dropped and you skid when you hit the banana skin or one of those oil slicks that James Bond used to drop from his Aston DB5…

I like wet tracks and little patches where water builds up more than others but big puddles spanning across the whole track is a bit OTT for me. I know you cant please everyone and I don’t consider it ‘that’ big of a deal but an option to not have the giant puddles would be great.

Races would have been abandoned long before puddles swept across the whole track, it’s ridiculous.

The rain is a complete disaster, nice try tho and certainly a welcome addition to the forza franchise. I’m sure it will be loads better in forza 7. Have faith this is such a obvious 1 it has to b sorted

The rain racing has all the real world physics and feel of a Mario Kart game on a Gameboy. It’s all too apparent that whoever developed the physics of rain racing may have, at one time, heard about a rain race from someone who read about it in a comic book.

Unless it’s absoutely pouring there is always a “dry line” on the track and puddles never pool across an entire track. If there are areas on the track where water accumulates, or runs across the full width if the track they call the race.

It’s mostly a gimmick. It changes the game completely, and I guess you can say it offers a different set of challenges, but it’s implementation is cartoonish at best.

It’s silly. I know it’s something just to be in your way… as it’s the reason the puddles are always on the racing line. Didn’t Turn10 say they took in actual data of lakes occurring in these areas? I mean, there’s a lake going across the entire track on the fastest corner on Sebring. Just throw in actual hurricane level conditions to where the whole track is flooded. It’s actually happened once. Yeah, That’ll challenge 'em.

Don’t generalise to much Big. Yes, there are a few on the racing but there are just as many off as well. I would go to say if you included the grass verge there are actually more.

Its a skill thing, if you’re only used to picking the fastest car and not controlling the braking and throttle then you’ll find the rain hard.

next time you in a real car in the rain try and think how you’re driving differently. doubt any one here would try go max throttle, high rev’d around a tight corner in the rain.

Wet tracks are just an exercise in memorising what parts of the circuit you need to avoid. Executed with any subtlety or finesse they could have been great, but as is they’re just tedious and the quality of the game would actually go up if they were all deleted.

After practicing a bit, I really enjoy racing in the rain. I am quite a bit better on the wet tracks than I am on some of the night tracks.

Once I learned how to drive in the rain, I have found that my times are a bit slower than on dry tracks, but not by all that much.

This is where we intersect between simulation and “gaming”. Yes racing in the wet is a bit extreme in this game, but that’s exactly where T10 like pushing the boundaries because it’s a “game” and adds a level of skills to your skillset that you won’t find in anywhere else. Is it frustrating at times, of course, and as much as I don’t mind it, I find it somewhat enjoyable at times, especially the patience and dexterity it requires to negotiate a car successfully around say Brands Hatch or Sebring. Plus you can’t go wrong with the amazing visuals of this rain event!!!

Check out pics and video of Road Atlanta Peitit Lemans 2015. Porsche 911 won overall because they couldn’t keep the prototypes on the track.

They did red flag after 8 hours but because of the combination or rain and darkness but ran all day in the pouring rain as long as they could. They even stopped earlier and brought out a backhoe in an attempt to improve conditions but it was futile. The ground was soaked and nowhere for the water to go. There were certain corners like through the Esses (4-5) and turn 10 A-B where there was constant streams of water over the road all day. Slowed them down some but it was exciting watching those corners.

Not Petit Le Mans, and it was an HPDE not a race, but you get the idea... in particular, watch the cars in the esses.

I expect Turn 10 went for the big puddles in an effort to make the difference between wet and dry that much more significant. Couple other race games I played - put on “wet” tires and you could hardly tell the track was wet.

Check again Don, the Petite Lemans last year was in fact run in absolutely horrid conditions.

You are right because I was there. It rained hard and constant all day and had been raining off and on all week previous. The circuit was a mess. The puddles formed in particular locations and drivers figured out how to best avoid them and that became the “new” racing line. Other areas had sheets of water flowing over and were just unavoidable and were problems the entire race.

Forza rain racing isn’t my favorite but from what I’ve seen its reasonably accurate.

Miscommunication (on my part)… I should have been more verbose. What I meant to convey was:

_**This video clip is not**_ Petit Le Mans... and it was an HPDE not a race, but you get the idea... in particular, watch the cars in the esses.
