Serious Issues With Game Play

I’m having some serious issues with game play that are keeping me from even being competitive. Not winning, just being competitive.

Some of it I think is me, but I think some of it may be my settings, and I think even some of it is the game.

The main issue and best example is oversteer. Just the slight bit of oversteer sends me into a violent fishtail that is unrecoverable.

No matter what I do I can’t overcome it.

I’ve played a lot of racing games, and have been very successful at all of them but for some reason I cannot control my vehicle.

Although I usually adapt to these types of games very quickly, but for some reason FH5 has been an absolute nightmare.

At first, I gave myself the benefit of the doubt and just thought it was being new and that maybe this game was just a little tougher to adjust.

Now I’m going on 200 hours and I cannot even be competitive. Anything above the novice skill and I either finish last or don’t finish at all in 90% of the races I participate in. This is no exaggeration, literally nine of ten games I don’t have a chance.

The other night I played 30 races in a row, didn’t hit the continue once, and didn’t finish one competitively. The only reason I finished is because against the avatars they let everyone finish. But not one of them was competitive at all. I’ll be 30 seconds to a minute behind the next to last vehicle.

After 200 hours I should be further along than I am.

I have friends that tried it that I have played other games with, that I am usually better than them, and after a few hours they don’t have near the issues I do.

I asked my daughter, who has never played a racing game in her life, to play one night with me and within 30 minutes to an hour it wasn’t even competitive anymore. For the record, she was using a controller.

I’m fairly patient when it comes to these things, and I’ve played the same 3 or 4 tracks over and over thinking I would get better but my vehicle is just uncontrollable.

I’ve watched dozens of videos on wheel settings, as well as experimented with settings on my own and nothing has really helped.

The only thing that has helped at all, and very little, is when I do my own tunes and adjust the sway bars all the way to prevent oversteering.

It really doesn’t help in the race, just keeps from oversteering. I don’t oversteer as bad but it makes my vehicle just less competitive.

I’m thinking it may be my wheel, but I’m not sure.

Any help and or advice would be appreciated.

Tunes make a hugeeee difference. Try tunes from experts such as KapienPl, SepiSP4, Rocklxd, Nalak28, Saeenu, DJS to name a few. These tuners may not suit your style but if they do they are typically very consistent.

I’ve tried at least have of these guys tunes and it didn’t make any difference whatsoever. I’ve tried at least 5 or 6 of Nalak’s tunes on several different vehicles and no difference at all.

Oversteer in this game is heavy with RWD and a wheel. That’s why basically all my tunes for A 800 and above are AWD ones. The game is catering way too much to arcade and pad/keyboard players and the tire physics are simply borked. On simulation and with a wheel you really are in a disadvantage here.

You can try play around with your settings as follows:

Settings > Difficulty > Steering

Make sure you’re not using ASSISTED. Try STANDARD or SIMULATION.

Settings > Difficulty> Traction/Stability Control

If you turn these off they will give you more control, however, this may not help you in your situation.

Settings > Advanced Controls > Steering Axis Deadzone Inside/Outside, Acceleration Axis Deadzone Inside/Outside, etc

The closer you move these values to 0 or 100 the more sensitive your steering, acceration and breaking becomes. This is fine tuning, so again not sure if it will help you with your situation.

I’ve tried everything you’ve mentioned except the in/out steering.

I set them based on what a YouTuber suggested, 0 and 100

It definitely seems like some settings are off. What wheel are you using? I use a Thrustmaster T150 and I did have to make some adjustments to the settings before I got comfortable.

Yeah I’m having some serious issues.

I think I will try one of the Thrustmasters that you can change out wheels, looks very interesting.

Just a curious question for starters. Are you playing from the cloud?

I’m not sure, how do i know?

You play on real hardware xbox or pc? Or via xbox app cloudgaming? In cloudgaming the input and lag makes it “unplayable”

Looks like wrong settings otherwise or idk. Used the G9xx series and its fine in FH5 i can reach almost the times i do with controller.

Someone said already turn Traction/Stability Off. It’s not hard to adapt to it but with the setting on it slows u down.

Other thing is where u play ingame and wich cars u use. Some stuff is meta but 30+ seconds sounds alot…

And check for 900deg wheel rotation ingame and logitech software if u changed it. Its ok in Horizon5 and makes things easier. In other games like ACC u have to lower it.

Oh and if u play with racingline on learn to ignore the red. Red means not always red (brake)

1 if your playing on cloud and using a wheel, that would be the reason you cant keep the car on the road. Also if you have playing on xbox and use quailty mode and a wheel would also mess it up. So make sure you are playing on 60fps performance mode

But can you now use steering wheel in the cloud? I don’t know currently, but a few months ago they were not enabled, you could only play with the controller.

Regarding the problem, it is strange, I know people who use that steering wheel and they are very competitive…Against humans. IA is not a problem.

Its a bit difficult to explain. The handling in Horizon 5 is generally on the understeery side. And it can be a bit unresponsive. At the same time your car can oversteer mid corner/corner exit and even a little bit of slide could cost you a lot. Especially in online racing which i like playing. So what you end up with is a tuning system where we as the players have to tune even the smallest inconsistencies in the car to make it handle as close to perfection as possible. To me which makes small details of the cars identity just vanish almost completely.

And thats ultimately what you would want to be looking for in the tunes you download. If a said tune has oversteer corner exit or it feels too heavy and unresponsive its just not going to work… And i know im gonna crash into a wall, get a slow down ( in online ) and possibly loose a lot of positions and get frustrated. ( I know because i tested it )

Thats not to say always all inconsistencies are bad. Sometimes they’re very managable if you know your vehicle and the tune. But more often they’re not. Which means you need a better tune.

And so there is the “find tunes” menu page. Most of what you’ll see is straight up bad. Even if its made by a well known creator in the community. And im not talking about the handling here but the parts that are picked for the build. Just the general stats. I know they’re not 100 % accurate but they can give you a rough overview of the tune. For example just recently i built and tuned a few cars that were faster on a straight line (road tuned, not for drag racing ) than the tunes i picked from the first page. And i know that because i tested them.

So as far as finding good tunes you just have to pick something, test it in a competitive for you setting and if its not good just look for something else. Thats basically what i did for most of my time in Horizon 5. Pick a tune, use it for a while… Dont like it? Find something else. And when i do find something good i keep it. Or make my own tunes (ive gotten better at this)

You play the game mainly on a wheel? I am a keyboard player and i have bought an xbox controller but i just feel a lot more competitive with the keyboard ( although i play other racers on the controller). Maybe try switching it up? Dont really feel shame to use traction control and ABS on. You can definitely get away with not using stability control. Also Horizon doesn’t play exceptionally well on a wheel as far as i hear. Its also preferable if you use simulation steering and not standart even on a controller.

I also learned that when you’re braking into a corner you should try to keep your car in a relatively straight line before making a hard turn because of how weight transfer works. This alone made me better. Also being more precise on the steering and braking helped me oversteer less. Something i still can’t quite fix on a controller as im not very precise with the stick. Might sound crazy for some but i didn’t grow up with or around consoles. So keyboard just feels more intuitive. I can race against AI just fine but i still use my keyboard for online racing.

I can play F1 on a controller much better compared to horizon. If that means something don’t be afraid to switch it up. But none of this seems to be your main issue if you’re really struggling this much to keep up. And i find it hard to believe running the game on a different platform(even if its inferior) could cause such difficulties for anyone. So much so that you end up 30 secods behind everyone? So its either you as the driver or the input.

Let me make a long story short.

I used to be a big Battlefield fan, I started with BFBC2 but I got burned out after BF1.

I played them all on console.

I bought both BF5 and 2042 the day they came out thinking one day I would play on my pc but I just never have.

Always playing BF on console I decided I would buy a controller just in case.

Last night after @PlageBLN stated that the game catered to game controllers I remembered I had a brand new logitech controller still in the box, the difference is night and day.

Its like the difference between a Pinto and a GT500.

Every problem that I had immediately disappeared.

The first match I played was I think “above average” (which I usually struggle to place) I actually won.

I’m not going to be on the leaderboards this weekend but at least I’m competitive now.

I’m just a little disappointed that a game as good as FH5 penalizes players who want to play with a wheel.

How do you manage to spend 200 hours like this? I wouldn’t be able to tolerate even 5. That’s hell of a lot of patience

I’m usually pretty good at the games I play, I’m very determined, and I don’t like giving up.

I’m starting to get a little older, 52, and I thought maybe that had something to do with it.

Last night when I came to the forum was my last straw, if I wouldn’t have gotten a change for the better I would have quit.

I’ll probably post some of my initial play soon just so you and everyone can see actually how bad it was.

I’m about the same age as you and I’ve only used a wheel. I wouldn’t say I’m dominating, but I’m competitive and it’s a lot more fun (for me) than using a controller.

You might try decreasing the Steering Linearity setting. This will decrease the steering sensitivity the further the wheel gets from center, which can help with oversteer. I often race with a friend who uses a Logitech wheel and he really struggled until we figured out that his wheel was set to be much too sensitive.

I’ve got a wheel but use a X-Box game controller for Horizon. I find the wheel is fine until you push it / race. Once you go hard and the car starts sliding around it’s very hard to control the car on a wheel whereas the game is a lot more forgiving on a game controller.

Plus drifting with a wheel is challenging to say the least.

@x1BRAVO9x, I’ve never gone to any lengths to mention my tunes before, but I will modestly suggest that you look around for any of mine that might appeal to you. They’re mostly for road racing cars in the lower classes, which is good if you’re working on driving skills.

I tune primarily for good solid neutral and predictable handling, controlling for both oversteer and understeer, and I generally don’t break bracket with a car. If it’s stock in A class, I push it up to the top of the class and race it like that. Since I spend a lot of PI on racing chassis components my tunes will usually be a little down on HP from the power builds that other people make but I still win my races with them. In my opinion it doesn’t matter how much horsepower you throw at a car if you can’t drive it hard.
