Rivals & Notifications: An Investigation

Updated with results:

The test: Which of the following will put a notification into a players’ [My Rivals] inbox?

  • I Follow/Friend a player on Xbox Live but he doesn’t Follow me, and I beat his time in Rivals.
    He gets no notification.

  • A player Follows me but I don’t follow them, and I beat his time in Rivals.
    He gets notified.

  • Neither of us Follow each other, and I beat his time in Rivals.
    He gets no notification.

  • Neither of us Follow each other, but we are in the same Club, and I beat his time in Rivals.
    He gets notified.

  • Both of us Follow each other and I beat his time in Rivals.
    He gets notified.

Additional note:

When you set a time on in Rivals, all of the following will get a notification:

  • Every person who is Following you on Xbox Live, has completed the same Rivals event and set a slower time than you.

  • Every person who is in the same Forza Horizon 3 Club as you, has completed the same Rivals event and set a slower time than you.

Original post:

youre right on 4, 2 would also work, and if im not mistaken you’ll get a notification from clubmates regardless of who’s following who,

I would suggest joining a club since your clubmates can send you Rival challenges as well, regardless of if you’re following them or if they followed you or not.

I sometimes get notifications from randoms who could very well be club mates.
I would happily occupy a slot in your friendlist to test this out

[4] is Confirmed

I would like to test [3] with somebody.
If someone who doesn’t follow me on Xbox can share a Rivals Event, car class and and their current leaderboard position, I’ll take them on.
I’m capable of hitting Top 100s so anything slower than that should be manageable.

As for Clubs, I’ll be able to test that later as I’ve recently joined one again.

3 wont work unless the person you beat is in the same club, people who have added you and clubmates , those are only two that will get a notification you beat them

lets try highlights, regular text doesn’t seem to get across in this thread lol…

I hear you, but I’d just like to test these things so that I am 100% certain

I’ve tested [3] with a club and yes, it works.

I’d still like to test [1] and [2] however if anyone’s up for it.

i’ll help ya with 2,i’ve added you, easiest place to beat me would probably s2 of rainforest cc circuit as youll only need to beat a dirty 46.013,

Thanks for helping out. I tried finding your time but as it’s Dirty it’ll take a while to scroll down.

Could you set a clean lap somewhere and quote your leaderboard position afterwards? Anything in the Top 1000 on a circuit will be easy for me to find.

you just needed to beat my time ,not my actual ghost for me to get a notification,i dont know how to post pics here, ill send you the rival notification i got via xbl

edit:beat your time 43:xxx so theres your answer for 1 ,whether or not you got a notification,
edit 2 whoops sorry pervasive didnt see you post

To prove/dispove #1

I set a #849 57.726 in Jeep Willy’s
A CLASS
At outback cross track scramble

I don’t believe we follow each other.
You can easily beat it in same tune. I was using a #1000 ish friend in nomad and held up at finish line before crossing should only take 2 laps maybe a clean out lap to beat this time

1945 keep Willys mb tuned by HLR Moss name of tune “byron town srr”

You should be able to crush this time in same tune and end up pretty high on LB.

Just saw your message, interesting.

So I didn’t have to challenge you directly at all in order to send you a note. That I wasn’t expecting.

So the conclusion I can draw from that is that whenever I run a Rivals event, everyone that Follows me whos time I have beaten gets a Notification.

I can confirm that we don’t follow each other (yet).

Just directly challenged your time and beat it:

  • 54.755
  • Leaderboard position: 106

Let me know if you get a Notification.

If this is true, then that would explain why the same clubmate sent me over 40 notifications in the past week. At first I was like “Why is he targeting me when there are almost 1000 club members?” but if indirect wins trigger notifications as well, then that would make more sense.

No notification here and I can see your time on LB.
I did get drivatar award notification so I would think if it does a notification there I would have seen the rival one. I will check tomorrow to see if it pops. But I’m thinking that it will not. For it to signal that since I last played my drivatar was in 15 races etc. that it would have met me know you challenged and beat my time.

Kind of crappy. That a direct challenge doesn’t signal the person beaten regardles of friendship. I would rather that, a direct challenge send notification then some friend or club member that didn’t even challenge my time, and just had a better race persay.

I’ll follow up tomorrow.

Ok just fired up. No notification for PJ beating my rival and I do have a rival notification from Swtluu21; so doubt I will get one.

I find this as a complete fail.
So we get notifications simply because someone drove faster then us- not even challenging a time. But a specific targeted challenge doesn’t get a notification unless you are friends (followers) or in same club.

:unamused: boo :unamused:

Challenged and beat PJ’s rival time
Proof on my activity and flicker

***ive not used flikr in a while and boy did they make it a freakin pain to share/embed a photo using Phone.

I’ll let you know tomorrow if I have a notification.

Update: I didn’t get one.

I definitely agree with you, Pervasive. I only want notifications from direct challenges, not because I happened to be collateral damage when a friend/clubmate challenged someone else.
