Even though it might have been a busy weekend, there’s nothing like having things to do around the house and spending a lot of quality time with your kids. I haven’t even gotten a chance to try out the Tanner Foust inspired car, but I’ll try it sometime this week.
As for coverage of Nascar, it was the Sprint All-Star weekend in the home of Nascar; Charlotte, NC. The drivers didn’t disappoint either. The first event of the weekend was the Sprint Showdown for all drivers not eligible for the All-Star race. The top two finishers would race their way into the All-Star race the next night. With a very dominating car, Clint Bowyer won the Sprint Showdown and moved into the All-Star race along with second-place finisher A.J. Allmendinger. Josh Wise won the fan vote to be voted into the All-Star as well with backing from a lot of great friends and family.
Once the field was set after the unique qualifying for the All-Star race which includes coming down pit road for a pit stop, Carl Edwards grabbed the pole and led the field to the green flag. The All-Star has a unique set up as well; 4 segments of 20 laps each with a 5th and final segment of 10 laps. During the first 4 segments, caution laps count, but in the final segment, only green flag laps count. After each 20 lap segment, a competition caution would wave and drivers and crew had the option of pitting or not and taking either 2 tires or 4. After 4th segment ends, the competition caution comes out and drivers are positioned on track according to their average finishing position from the first 4 segments. Once they are all in the correct position, teams had to come in for a mandatory 4 tire pit stop and however the drivers came out of the pits is how they would line up for the final 10 lap shootout.
Now, onto the racing. During the first segment, Kyle Busch looked like the car to beat. However, that would change as during segment 2, he was involved in an accident that took out his car and the cars of Joey Logano and A.J. Allmendinger. After Kyle Busch’s night ended short, Kasey Kahne emerged as having the best car in the field and won both segment 2 and 3. During segment 4 though, it seemed as Kahne’s car faded a bit and fans would see another wreck that took out Martin Truex Jr., Greg Biffle and Jeff Gordon, who seemed to have one the most consistent cars of the night and actually had to best average finish going into segment 4. However, mechanical problems in the front end caused his car to run up the track and collect both Truex and Biffle in the unfortunate mess.
After segment 4 ended, the top 5 best average finishes were Kevin Harvick, Kasey Kahne, Jamie McMurray, Jimmie Johnson and Carl Edwards. Once pit stops were completed, the order changed due to great and terrible pit stops by the crews. Carl Edwards had the number 1 pit stall and got out in front of everyone while Kevin Harvick, who came in the pits in 1st, came out a disappointing 3rd. Once the green flag flew, Carl Edwards and Jamie McMurray battled hard for the lead with McMurray hanging it all out on the top side and almost crashing a few times before he eventually cleared Edwards and never looked back, getting his first All-Star win and the $1 million prize that came with it. Congrats to Jamie on a great drive and win!
