Having a more realistic automatic gear shifting, having the car change gears relative to the throttle input
Run manual with or without clutch. The latter gives you the most control.
If you’re super concerned with speed, you really should run manual. Even if you’re not great at it, the artificial speed boost it gets may at least keep you matching if not exceeding your automatic times. Practice should improve your results, of course.
(Edit: This is assuming that the artificial speed boost that’s been in previous games still persists.)
