Well, I gave in and contacted Microsoft for a refund. The more I played the more game breaking bugs I found. I love the idea of the game, race weekends, damage, night racing and weather but even with all that I prefer the handling of Forza 5, especially given the games current state. Maybe with a wheel it would have been totally different, but as others have said the game feels way off using a controller.
I’ve had my car flipping upside down while exiting the pits (had damage on and wrecked my car), the weird snow like flashes all over the track, weird black smudges during night races, some cars handle terribly, freezes, stuttering audio and visuals, not registering my laps, so 5 laps in I’m last and still on my first lap for some reason… the list goes on.
Whilst I wish the game and Slightly Mad Studios all the best, I’m just not prepared to wait for it all to be fixed having spend £50 on the digital copy of the game, when IF everything is fixed I could probably buy the disc for less than £20 6 months down the line.
I’ve been burnt before, Battlefield 4 most recently, and most badly by TDU 2 that never got fixed. I’m looking forward to what Forza 6 has to offer, but F1 2015 should keep me busy till then… IF that’s not totally broken at launch. I’ll buy it after launch to be sure. I think that it for me and launch titles now, I’m going to wait until after to purchase my games.
Totally need to resist preordering The Witcher now! lol
I hope you guys enjoy the game, and I may revisit if things get better. I’m just sorry I can’t support a game being released in this condition. Paying top £/$ for what I can only describe as a mess. I heard the horror stories and defended the game out of the gate, but some things you just can’t ignore. It’s admirable what they have tried to do, just the execution isn’t there.
I have the disc version and play with the one controller: Karting, open wheel rookie, open wheel gulf, GT5, GT3, day, night, dry and wet conditions whith no trouble yet .
Some cars like the Clio Cup felt nice to drive. Other cars like the Catherham Super 7 feel horrible. Too much grip in the Formula C and B and not enough in the Formula A for me.
It really did feel somewhere between Shift and Forza. As I said before I really like the sense of weight.
I’d say it was a love hate feeling I had with the game, but it was more of a meh hate feeling. Nothing blew me away. If Forza 5 had weather, day / night and race weekends I honestly don’t think there would be so much love for the game.
Someone summed it up earlier, this whole sense of sim elitism. That because a racing game is hard to control and is on PC then its the ultimate sim. I think people expected this game to be of that ilk, but for me it’s no real step forward in terms of handling.
The handling is inconsistent at best, some cars feel floaty, some are very slippy and some even too grippy. The sense of weight is there, and every car does feel different, but on the pad it’s not great at the moment. Look at how many people in the thread are wanting to alter all the settings. Says it all really.
I can’t comment on handling with a wheel, I’m guessing it’s much better if you can get the wheel to work. Heard of many issues there too.
What the game gets right is the idea. And I know it’s had a relatively small budget so perhaps that’s why the excecution isn’t up to par. It’s just becoming a bit to regular in gaming now.
Just a shame there are tons of people on the games forums denying there are any issues. Some even going as far as to say they are happy to help develop the game whilst it is fixed and show their support. They forget this is a retail release and not a less than half price early access game or beta.
I guess it is a bit better with a wheel, and the force feedback should feel good to xbox-only players who are only used to Forza.
But that aside, it`s just as inconsistent. I had races/cars I really enjoyed. Others feel ridiculously off.
I just tried Catalunya with the Formula A car, weekend prep. And …well, meh. I think the Renault Clio had better traction.
In the end, everytime I quit playing I am angry. Because the AI ran me over. Because I spun out and have no freaking clue why. Because the “Tires by weather” option sent me into a rainstorm with slicks. Because the car I am stuck with in career drives like a boat. …
I actually do not think you can do that many cars justice in such a short time since launch.
I have just got the hang of Formula rookie. Whilst some have had more immediate enjoyment and success I have had to work for it but can now say that I finally feel like keeping the game.
I was on the verge of returning (without any grumpy complaints - I simply was not enjoying it but decided to try a different approach and it worked). But I can say right now each car will take me time to get to grips with.
My different approach was to stop looking for perfection in the controller setup menu and just get out on the track.
Now I usually hate practice sessions. I usually skip them. But I am running them and in my first session I went out on the track and then some time later it said session ended. I didn’t even realise I had been out there that long.
This game will take time for some and hopefully people will find it worth it. If not return it and find a more enjoyable game.
In case people are struggling with the controller here is what I am using:
Steering Deadzone 5
Steering Sensitivity 10
Throttle Deadzone 0
Throttle Sensitivity 45
Brake Deadzone 0
Brake Sensitivity 35
Clutch (not using) deadzone 0
Sens 45
Speed sensitivity 70
Controller Filtering 90
FFB 100
Mode 3
Advanced On
Soft On
Visual On
Op Lock Off
I have also started to dabble in tuning and so far am using ARBs to stabilise the cars (stiffer at front) and for cars with diffs backing off accel to stop oversteer.
My main issue now is corner exit oversteer (not power related) - either I am exiting too late or something else is at play.
This game can only be described as broken. Fairly close to unplayable. The glitches just keep on coming. From the cars locking at full steering lock, to the sounds not working through my headphones and causing me to not be able to change gears. If this game had been released in November last year, as was originally planned, I could forgive them for the bugs, but after three delays over 6 months to 'polish’the game, this is unforgivable. Forza 6 will only need to be half as good again than Forza 5 and Project CARS will be dead in the water. Basically, if Turn 10 take the current Forza model, add weather and time of day, and possibly make the colours less intense, then it will bury SMS attempt at a title.
I tried all the suggestions for the controller settings on the project cars forums to no avail, the cars are still ridiculously twitchy through one corner, then the turning rate disappears to a crawl on the same corner on the next lap. The graphics appear somewhere in-between Horizon and Motorsport 5 with regards to photo realism, but Forza dont suffer from major frame rate drops and snow falling on a sunny day.
It all feels a bit like there were too many inputs into the the game, all the ideas were added, but not enough were blended. It’s a bit like watching somebody interview Robin Williams, 3 million ideas all coming out at once.
The patches would want to be not only big, but quick, as if it hasnt improved to be somewhere near the quality of Forza 3 by the end of May, I shall be trading it in for a pre-order of LEGO Jurassic Park.
This is NOT a ‘pick up and play’ game. There are a number of bugs reported across the user base but so far I have only encountered one (a one-off crash to dashboard on leaving pit lane and switching to manual mode). I’ve only driven two cars around one track in solo mode (Catalunya GP, Renault Clio, and BMW 1M) and have spent the bulk of time trying to work out the myriad elements in setting up a wheel properly. I had it working for a session last night with the 1M and it was little short of brilliant. The graphics are quite flattened looking on XB1, but are more than good enough for track visibility etc. Sound is very good also. It’s early days and it is not a console game by any stretch of the imagination. It is a PC Sim that has made it (largely unscathed) onto consoles. Totally different world, so bring different expectations. I for one will be giving this title a good hammering for quite some time.
Project Cars is definitely a lot different. In my time playing it, I like it but it’s not going to replace Forza. It looks nicer at this point but i will say if I had ot choose between Project Cars and Forza I’d probably still lean toward Forza. I play Project Cars on pc so I haven’t seen the abundance of issues that people are talking about here and can say the game runs smoothly. If I didn’t have it I’d still definitely get it but it doesn’t mean I’m giving Forza the boot as I’m still excited for 6.
So far game looks great with no funny bugs and alike. Driving some cars more difficult than others, but then I still have to do settings on my controller. Leaving the wheel till later.
Just one issue - Driver Network and Timetrial remains locked, though I could enter it after I installed the game (from disk) last night. Anyone got some advice - perhaps just me that’s stupid ?
Thanks. That worked last night after I installed, so did a few Time Trials and enter some race series on Driver Network then. This morning both of them and Xbox Store remains locked. I can enter “Online” for lobbies though.
The controller bugs and the massive framerate loss on Xbox One is obviously related to each other according to the developers of the game, so I’m hopeful that they will solve the problem as soon as possible.
Quote# We’re trying to repro the issue now. It seems there’s some occasional lapses in controller behaviour that also seem to be leading to occasional screen freezes, lag.
We’ll get to the bottom of it and get a patch out as soon as it’s nailed.
