Poll for clutch users: do you flat shift?

Hi folks,

Since I started playing Forza 4, I’ve turned the assists off and used the clutch because it felt most similar to the types of cars I work on and drive in real life. Part of that comparison means I try to shift like I would on those cars; i.e. I lift off the throttle when upshifting and blip when downshifting. My mechanical sympathy really sets off when I hear the limiter between shifts, haha. In replays and online lobbies I’ve been in, the telemetry suggests that I’m pretty much the only one who does this. (I know the audio on replays is messed up, I’m taking about throttle telemetry). Does anyone here lift on upshifts and blip on downshifts? Is there an actual advantage to one method of the other?

-Mike

Hello,

I often use a clutch when I’m driving cars with slower shift times. If I’m driving a car with a really quick shift time, some minor mistakes that I sometimes make with a clutch can ruin a whole race for me, so I stray away.

As to your question, it’s almost always faster to flat shift. As in real life, you’re going to have a bit of a power advantage when releasing the clutch if the rpms are up there. However, use caution. It’s extremely easy to spin the tires coming out of a corner if you do this, because of that little power bump.

Hey Big Red1500, I’m like you in clutch use. Also a gearhead, I like the added realism, performance and power in game with clutch. I learned early, say FM3, to take it easy on the power while clutching. Lost a few races that way. My new gig is learning my new wheel and pedal set with clutch pedal. I. guess I can smoke the clutch this way, but not yet happened. Its all in practicing to be as good as we can be for how far we go down the rabbit hole. CU at the races.

I flat-shift (controller), always have.

I briefly toyed with blip-shifting (releasing the throttle and quickly reapplying it) in this game and while it has its uses I am already at a pace level where I don’t need to squeeze every last thousandth of a second out of the car to succeed.

That being said, blip-shifting does help in cars that would break traction when you flat-shift, as you don’t get that sudden jolt of torque. I don’t do it often but if I’m in one of those affected cars and exiting a corner, I may blip-shift in order to not kick the rear end out.

Ever since I got into using manual w/clutch, I’ve just flat-shifted. I found it to be way easier and faster. I blip on downshifts as well.

Interesting, thanks for the input! So I guess if I want to get that extra little bit, I need to stop lifting on upshifts. The traction thing makes sense; I’ll keep that in mind as a try higher-horsepower cars.

Slightly unrelated, but I find it interesting you still have to use the clutch in cars where it’s not necessary. Dual-clutch gearboxes are the obvious example, but even the Lotus Cortina in my sig is equipped with a straight-cut dogbox and I can shift that without using the clutch. None of this is taken into account in Forza. I guess that’s not that surprising though, since they missed many more basic things…

Using the switch handbrake and clutch buttons on a controller is the (fastest) option so you can hit A and B or X at the same time. I dont let off up shifting myself, unless im in a corner or i feel my car will kick the back out because of it. as far as downshifting I always blip almost no reason not to unless the rpms are very low and speed is low. but 99% of the time im blipping. as far as a wheel if i do switch over id try to get the paddle to use both buttons somehow or figure out a way thats just as fast or comfortable to my liking. The realistic side of it isnt on par ill admit but Im on multiple top 10 times so if its fast im going to use it : )
