Manual with Clutch

I’ve converted from auto to manual and now manual with clutch. I’m new to Forza and consoles and my times are not consistent enough to determine if letting off the gas during shifting is slower or faster while shifting. I prefer the sound of letting off the gas but don’t want to be losing time…

Next big hurdle is figuring out braking better and understanding tuning. I’m to the point I can make a stock car better for my driving but I don’t understand it enough.

Thanks for any help.

keep it to the floor (trigger squeezed)… doesnt sound as good as lift shifting but it is not slower, may not be much faster, but def isnt slower and is also much simpler to do.

The difference isn’t as noticeable in circuit racing. You notice it most when driving a RWD drag car.

No need to let off the throttle. When you get the right shift point (it varies) the tach won’t bounce, it will be a nice smooth transition to the next gear with a sort of single click sound. Only super important to get it perfect when drag racing, where hundredths of a second can make a difference.

Thanks guys. Still haven’t gotten into drag racing. Tried a couple of times but not enough to be hooked.

I know it helped me a lot to switch the clutch button from LB button to the A button on my controller. It’s somewhere in the Forza settings menus. I almost completely gave up on the clutch until I figured out that I could swap buttons.

when you switch the hand brake and clutch buttons its makes a huge diff your times will be consistent again and faster.

i second that

i might have to try that… Because its LB is the only reason i havent tried it yet

You need to lift shift if you’re racing full damage as you’ll damage your transmission if you don’t. Doesn’t matter if you race with damage off.

yep even if you mistime the throttle after shifting will damage the tranny.

Have they changed that with a recent update? Its a few weeks ago since i last used full damage with manual clutch, but i usually dont lift shift when shifting up, and i never damaged my tranny this way (as long as you hit the correct RPM to shift). I only damaged it with badly timed downshifting (where i always lift the throttle). Would be cool if it has changed

No, you can damage the engine by upshifting too early and exceeding the rev limiter. You can tell if you’ve done if the car is smoking.

Power upshifts just hit the rev limiter and bounce off.

ah ok thanks for clarifying. I remember that i kept checking the telemetry during the GTViper@Road America Bounty event (did this one with damage on) and it only showed damage after some messy downshifts. After some adjusting my eye/hand coordination i was able to run 20+ laps without any tranny damage. I must be a natural talent at upshifting, haha, while i’m miserably at downshifting  Guess i should do drag racing going forward

I’m really getting into stick shift cars in real life, but I can’t drive them in Forza 5. I race with ABS off, and LB for the clutch is a horrible place for the button. I can’t brake for a turn while pressing the clutch. Is there any way to remap the clutch button from LB to A in Forza 5?

If you go into the controller settings there is an option to swap handbrake and clutch buttons, this puts the handbrake on the lb and clutch on a

I came in to post about switching from LB to A, but that’s already handled. It is so much easier that way.

As for when damage is on, it really depends on race length. Unless you’re racing for an hour or more the damage is negligible. You’ll wear tires out faster than the transmission, which then gets fixed when you pit for new tires.

is it the same as forza 4 where full throttle gear change with a clutch is quicker off the line than normal manual without a clutch

i used to pull away from my mate from the starting line when using identical cars when i had manual with clutch

I am playing manual two, but whithout clutch. I tryed manual whith clutch (on “a”) but dont see the the advantage of clutch. Can anyone explaine plz?

The biggest advantage of the clutch is the torque generated after letting off the throttle, shifting with the clutch, and then (depending on your cars shift time) pulling down on the throttle. I use “A” (clutch) along with “X” (shift up) at the same time with my thumb, but I have not yet cared enough nor mastered the shift down with the clutch. I just press “B” (shift down). I find that my index fingers are better off being on the most important aspects of the controller layout for Forza (Brake & Throttle). If you want to know for sure if there really is a difference in using the clutch or not; just ask any of the top 100 players on the leaderboards for any track and they’ll tell you they use clutch.

If you are shifting correctly and not just revving out every gear for an extended period of time you wont damage the vehicle. It is much easier to damage the vehicle on downshifts. Downshifting to rapidly will ruin a clutch.
